Supposed to be pretty warm here today, with maybe a little rain. Not too much, I hope, ‘cuz we really don’t need to be melting all this snow all at once. My main plan for today is to sit and watch my beer ferment. And maybe get empty out a few bottles, to make room for it when it’s done. It’s not like I have any Big East basketball worth watching. Just a week until everybody’s favorite holiday. Have a good Saturday.

The scandal over treatment of outpatients at Walter Reed Army Medical Center has focused attention on the Army’s decision to privatize the facilities support workforce at the hospital, a move commanders say left the building maintenance staff undermanned.
Some Democratic lawmakers have questioned the decision to hire IAP Worldwide Services, a contractor with connections to the Bush administration and to KBR, a Halliburton subsidiary.

IN OVERTURNING the District of Columbia’s long-standing ban on handguns yesterday, a federal appeals court turned its back on nearly 70 years of Supreme Court precedent to give a new and dangerous meaning to the Second Amendment. If allowed to stand, this radical ruling will inevitably mean more people killed and wounded as keeping guns out of the city becomes harder. Moreover, if the legal principles used in the decision are applied nationally, every gun control law on the books would be imperiled

I believe that the polls have shown that a large majority of Americans support gun control. If these laws are overturned, the disaster it will cause is obvious and the backlash, I think, is predictable.
Here’s the letter written to Fox Noise, cancelling the debate. Sounds like poetry to me!

DELIVERED VIA FAX AND EMAIL
Dear Marty,
A month ago, the Nevada Democratic Party entered into a good faith agreement with FOX News to co-sponsor a presidential debate in August. This was done because the Nevada Democratic Party is reaching out to new voters and we strongly believe that a Democrat will not win Nevada unless we find new ways to talk to new people.
To say the least, this was not a popular decision. But it is one that the Democratic Party stood by. However, comments made last night by FOX News President Roger Ailes in reference to one of our presidential candidates went too far. We cannot, as good Democrats, put our party in a position to defend such comments.
In light of his comments, we have concluded that it is not possible to hold a Presidential debate that will focus on our candidates and are therefore canceling our August debate. We take no pleasure in this, but it is the only course of action.
Sincerely,
Tom Collins
Chairman, Nevada State Democratic Party
Harry Reid
U.S. Senator (D-NV)
It should be a dark ale.

Oh, I didn’t notice that, either. Frankly, I don’t much care about the number of posts. I’m more interested in the substance. And I know that a very, very small fraction of my posts have been substantive. Hell, only a a tiny number of my daily “starters” have much of anything in them.
It’s everybody else’s comments that make this place worth, not mine. If I ever find the time, between homebrewing and school, and lazy, idle, procrastination, I’d like to turn this into more of a community site, with everybody having the ability to have their own blog and whatnot, and maybe just a front page with news and contributions from multiple people. But, I just don’t seem to be able to find the time. And there’s probably not that much interest.
It’s interesting to note that, while the number of daily posts has gone down, we still get about the same number of visitors here lurking. So, you’re posting for a much wider audience than you realize (how’s that for pressure).

The biggest secret to making your own beer is to be sure it quits fermenting before you bottle it .
We had some one in college who made some beer and had not taken that into account .. He unfortunately lived on the third floor of a dorm with steam heating pipes going vertically to the rooms above and below. The beer started exploding in his fridge and ran down the hot pipes .. His daddy was none to happy with the bill and everyone else was none to happy with the smell. :yuck: :crap: ๐ฎ :reaper: :reaper:

Feds tried to cut aid
Federal officials secretly schemed to limit payouts for sick and dying nuclear weapons workers, including thousands from the Rocky Flats plant outside Denver, newly released documents show.
The officials responsible for helping those workers went behind their boss’s back, called on White House officials for help and tried to hide their efforts, according to internal e-mails and memos obtained by a congressional committee and posted on its Web site.

Actually, after it’s done fermenting, you add a little priming sugar to reactivate the yeast so that it carbonates in the bottles. Not enough, and you get flat beer. Too much, and you get hand grenades.
That recarbonization part sounds like something Alfed Nobel was the first to get good at . ๐ฎ
Hey, PJ, save me a bottle. I just threw out the last bottle of my last batch. Apparently the cap wasn’t airtight because the brew came out totally flat. :smack:
Yesterday I cleaned my living room, cleaned the kitchen and washed the floor, rearranged (but didn’t clean) my crafts/sewing/computer room, and shampooed half the carpet in the living room. I think that’s not bad for mental health improvement. Today I’ll be hiking to the library and then the grocery store for something to poison the MOUSE that I saw scurry across my kitchen floor last night. (Due to the age of the houses and our proximity to a man-made railroad canyon the whole neighborhood has a rodent problem…) Tonight I’m going to try sewing a new jacket. Tomorrow I’m hopefully going to Powells to sell some books, then cruise Saturday Market (in Portland it’s Saturday on Sunday for some reason) and then come home and finish cleaning. So if there’s time in between I’ll check in.
I wonder how much it’s gonna cost to add HBO to my cable package? Sigh! I love Marc dearly but I really hate having to add HBO.

I was getting tired of not being able to walk through my living room without stepping over a pile of either books or papers. And my fabric stash is getting out of hand, too.

Then enjoy some MAC basketball. Akron vs. Miami (OH) for all the marbles at 7 PM EST on ESPN2. (Goebbels, I know, but WTF, it’s the alma mater, dammit.)
The Zips have an outside chance of making the big show even if they lose, since they now have 26 wins after last night’s stunning victory over hated rival Kent State. But if they win tonight, we won’t have to guess. Akron and Miami split the season series, so it should be a good one.

Gee, you’d think someone who needs Viagra wouldn’t cast aspersions on anybody else’s manliness.
Nah, if UB is out, there’s no point in me watching MAC basketball, either.
here is a little blurb on Maron, in case no one has posted it….and also this is the site with the long list of the streams of AAR shows down the left side of the page
Ha, I didn’t see this before. Poor Billo.
That picture of Maron with the cigar makes him look like Alan King. If you’re a mad optimist, we might get a radio show and the HBO series in the same year, and apparently, we won’t have to sit through that bimbo dipshit Cox on the same show. All we need is a double impeachment and a quick troop drawdown to make ’08 a year to cherish.
And buying HBO is not so terrible, as Bill Maher is funny from time to time.
Does Maron on HBO mean Earl too? [you see, these people are never satisfied].
That Harry Reid letter backing out on Fox is the lamest thing I’ve ever seen. So we’re to believe that Roger Ailes’ “joke” about Obama was the last straw? Every piece of deceit and dishonesty that proceeded that event was forgiven? Thank god Edwards had a little guts and did the right thing. If he’s not careful, that boy might wind up winning, since most Dems are fed up with these gutless bastards. :sammy:

Marc could/should be in a good position right now. Great loyalty and support from a little rag tag band does not hurt. A radio/cable tandem is a great strategy. I am not sure Earl works on video :sammy: except for some of us.
