Wednesday already, and what have we learned this week? We learned that gay sex is immoral (though presumably killing hundreds of thousands of people is OK). We learned that Bush and Rove had nothing to do with the US Attorney firings, except they did (but it’s OK, ‘cuz they can), and that they weren’t politically motivated (except when they were, but that’s OK, too). We also learned that “mistakes were made” (always use the passive voice when you want to apologize for something while making clear it has absolutely nothing to do with you). Oh, and we learned that the Army is sending troops back to Iraq that are not only unfit for duty, but they can’t even wear the body armor that not enough of them have in the first place (which should mean there ought to be plenty to go around now). I think we probably learned some other stuff, too, but it’s all too much for my little head.
:crap: killer worms and ninja turtles……
Nice rant PJ. Back in January, I took a refresher course on business writing. One of the points covered was avoiding passive-tense references if at all possible.
When the instructor asked for examples of passive tense, I had the presence of mind to chime in with the notorious “Mistakes were made.”
Not only did she like it, we got sidetracked into a five-minute discussion of Bush’s lack of communication skills which could have lasted a LOT longer than five minutes had the instructor not dialed it back to get us back on track. Big fun.
Anytime anyone tries to tell you that Reagan was a great president, throw this back at them:
1) Ketchup is a vegetable
2) Trees cause pollution
3) Mistakes were made.
Only a few of the classics.

Gonzales: ‘I did make some mistakes’
WASHINGTON (CNN) — Attorney General Alberto Gonzales conceded Wednesday that he “absolutely” should’ve been more plugged in to the process that saw eight U.S. attorneys fired.
Gonzales said he charged his chief of staff, Kyle Sampson, with determining “where we could do better” after then-White House Counsel Harriet Miers suggested canning all 93 U.S. attorneys, an idea Gonzales says he opposed.
“I had confidence in my chief of staff to drive that process forward, to vet names throughout the department,” Gonzales said. (Watch the attorney general defend the decision while acknowledging mistakes Video)
Sampson came back with the list of eight names that has sparked a political furor that has included calls for Gonzales’ resignation and ushered Sampson out of the Justice Department, the attorney general said.
Gonzales said Tuesday that “mistakes were made,” but turned the focus on himself in the Wednesday interview.
“I think I did make some mistakes and we’re going to take steps to ensure that that doesn’t happen again,” he said.
“We’re going to work really hard to find out what we’ve been up to, and are prepared to issue ourselves a severe scolding, if necessary. Also, I’m working on a new book, entitled ‘If I Did It,’ which would explain how I would have obstructed justice, authorized torture, and violated half of the Bill of Rights, and several other articles of the US Constitution if I had, which of course I didn’t.”

Craig Crawford’s Trail Mix: White House Gives Ground in Prosecutor Probe
By Craig Crawford | 12:03 PM; Mar. 13, 2007 |
The most remarkable thing about the growing scandal over the Bush administration’s recent firings of federal prosecutors is how quickly — and uncharacteristically — the White House is giving in.
cont’d at link above.
Faraday decided to sleep in this morning. He got under the covers on my bed, head resting on a pillow, and refused to get out of bed. I had to pick his fuzzy little butt (and the rest of his fuzzy self) up and carry him to the laundry room where his food and toys are, where he is theoretically locked in until I get home. (He knows how to open the baby gate that’s holding him in but we maintain the fiction that he’s locked in until I’ve locked the front door behind me.
My dog thinks he’s a human. And not just any human. He thinks he’s a human taking a day off from work.

Have I mentioned how I hung out with Maron?
And how he hugged me a couple times and kissed me on the cheek?
And how my performance thing last night for class included me making proclamations including that Maron kicked ass? And hung out with me?
Have I mentioned all of that?
Today?
First on the US Atty investigation list:
Get the aide who supposedly inserted the provision into the unPATRIOT Act, anbd ask him at whose behest he did it. That should clear up a lot.

The link in #11 was NFG (http://http://whatever.com). I fixed it.
I find this disgusting. It’s amazing what horribly devastating “medications” are legal, and yet this is a federal offense.
Yeah, but taking a little toke is a federal crime.
Oh boy, my student e-mail address gets me free access to the NY Times select. I no longer need to go through Lexis to get Krugman & Rich (or to read Dowd snark, Friedman drivel, and Brooks bullshit).
So you see, PJ, school is good for something :yippee: :yippee: :yippee:
I take it that NFG is one of those technical acronyms like Not Found Goodnessgraciousmeomy.

No class tonight, ‘cuz I’m on spring break (which means I have ten times as much shit to do).
But, as for the mp3 player, no doubt the software that comes with it is for Windows only (and who the hell really needs the crappy software that comes with these things?), but it may still work as a mass storage device (that is, if you plug it in, it shows up as a removable hard drive) if you plug it into a Mac (that’s how it would work on a Windows computer, anyway; just plug it in, it shows up, and then you can copy files back and forth, or even set up your podcatcher to download your favorite podcasts to it automajically).
You may also not be able to update the firmware on it using a Mac.
If you believe the Mac commercials, then any device should work with a Mac. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case.
Looking at the Philips site, there’s no information on that specific model (PSA232), but they have info on the PSA110/220/250 and 410 (all apparently NIKE branded, and none sold in North America). On the FAQ’s for all of those models, under “Which Operating systems are supported by the players?” the answer is “The PSA player may only support Windows 98 SE / ME/ 2000 (SP4 or above) / XP (SP1 or above) operating system.”
I don’t know what they mean by “may” (could be they don’t want to go out on a limb, or that’s just how it translates from Chinese) but, to make a long answer a little bit longer, I would probably stay away from this refurbished item if I were you. You can get a 512 MB player pretty cheap these days, and I think I’d look for one that I know will work (unless you’re willing to futz around with it if it doesn’t work – or give it to somebody as a birthday present or something).

PJ, thhanks for advice on the mp3 player. I’d be willing to futz, but think I’ll follow your advice and look for a cheap 512.

Huh?
Evening all. Well I just found out that John Inman passed away. Reggie is based in part on his character Mr. Humphries.
🙁
Since the Sept. 11 attacks, when he was mayor of New York City, Mr. Giuliani has been linked in the public mind to firefighters and police officers, whom he regularly hails as heroes as he campaigns around the country.
Yet the firefighters and police officers who know Mr. Giuliani best, those in New York City, have mixed views of him, ranging from admiration to outright hostility.
That has filtered through to leaders of their national associations who Mr. Giuliani of trying to cut short the effort to find victims’ remains in the World Trade Center wreckage.
They also contend that his administration mishandled the development of a radio system that could have saved lives on Sept. 11, and that Mr. Giuliani blundered in putting the city’s emergency command center in the trade center.
In short, the leaders say, the image of Mr. Giuliani as the expert handler of a national security crisis is false.
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/03/14/us/politics/14rudy.html
The board of the National Association of Evangelicals has rebuffed leaders of the Christian right who had called for the association to silence or dismiss its Washington policy director because of his involvement in the campaign against global warming.
Prominent Christian conservatives like James C. Dobson, chairman of Focus on the Family, and Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, had sent a letter to the association’s leaders this month accusing the policy director, the Rev. Richard Cizik, of “using the global warming controversy to shift the emphasis away from the great moral issues of our time,†which they defined as abortion, homosexuality and teaching children sexual morality and abstinence.
Board members say that the notion of censoring Mr. Cizik never arose last week at their meeting in Minnesota, and that he had delivered the keynote address at their banquet.
In addition, the board voted 38 to 1 to endorse a declaration, which Mr. Cizik helped to write, that denounces the American government’s treatment of detainees in the fight against terrorism.

I hadn’t heard about that, Andy. That’s too bad. At least we still have Mollie Sugden (and her pussy).
Channel 12 here in Philly was doing a little tribute to him. He died last week. He was actually here in town a few years ago doing a fundraiser for channel 12 and as funny as he was on “Are You Being Served”, he was hysterical live.
And I am unanimous in that!!!
andy aka Aquaman Awwwww The last I believe I saw him, periodaccally, was as the character Mr. Humphries.
