All the Tower Records here have all closed and the “cooler†record stores are all downsizing their space or closing all together. I think this is really bad. Record stores were my cultural center for so many years! Besides, I still buy cd’s mostly.
Kristapea, It is sad how someone like David Byrne and many other ‘hipsters’ and mods want to beat a path to this ‘brave new world’ of digital downloads. It is only going to diminish the world of music in the long run. Just look at what has happened already. It won’t be the liberating experience so many predict. There will still be domination by big companies, perhaps different ones (iTunes/Apple, Starbucks, Clear Channel) and by big artists. Along the way there will be a further erosion of the marketplace because of the people who do not take the plunge as has happened every time there is a format or technological shift, mostly older or less affluent people. That is something the business can ill afford.
A person hath risen. But isn’t a blend, like the concept “in-store” to work better for all. I do not support a StarBucks nor that ideology and except when a friend went for a coffee and we went to one :omg: , I have never been. People “Give-in to the :crap: so easy”. I also refuse to go to the Chinese store Wal-Mart and Target. Never been.

So, I set up my new Qwest account for my new place and my neighborhood does not have DSL, it has fiberoptics. Also Qwest has started offering cable tv. Does anyone have any experience with the fiberoptics?
He was the ultimate keeper of secrets, lurking in the shadows of American history. He toppled banana republics, planned the Bay of Pigs invasion and led the Watergate break-in. Now he would reveal what he’d always kept hidden: who killed JFK
This was pretty interesting. It’s a good insight into the minds of people who think they are patriotic and think they are serving their country. It’s really important that humans get past patriotism and move on to humanism.
I have been listening to the Young Turks w/ Rick Overton as cohost this morning, the podcast from 3/15. It reminds me a lot of MS and Overton actually brings out more of the funny from Cenk. There is a great recurring bit where they make fun of Bush where he makes up a new word.
I guess I’m still thinking about yesterday’s news.
In retrospect, it looks like we were very close to getting
Maron back on AAR. Since the Green brothers only
bought the company a couple of weeks ago, securing
Marc must have been a high priority for them to get
on it so quickly. At least, the new management seems
to have good taste and Marc seems to be a hot property.
Marc thought this was a raw deal, either for himself or
Sam, probably both. I don’t think it is fair for him to
pile the sins of the old management on the new; the debt
and the past firings are really not the fault of the Green
team (although there may be some players that carried
over). If he felt he was getting screwed this time, it’s
a new “screwing,” not more of the old. However, I don’t
blame him in feeling a lot of built-up resentment.
I hope he’ll be back on radio somewhere and look into
a deal that would give him some rights to releasing
CDs of his own radio material should a new show
hit. You know we all would have shelled out for MS
CDs which AAR was too stupid or inept to issue.
Thom Hartman seems to be both an independent
contractor and an AAR employee and if he ever needs
to pack up and move on, I think it wouldn’t be as
hard on him as it was on Marc; other talent should
take note.
In my fantasies, AAR2.0 runs after Marc to kiss
his feet, bearing Sam in a sedan chair with them.
I am surprised that this offer created so many
hard feelings because I’d hoped
the Green team would be smarter than that.
With the Green’s plan to integrate AAR with the blogs
and other liberal media, I don’t see why they’d want
to axe Sam. Sam has always been very closely
connected with the blogs and has been picking up
Al’s popular guests. I love the Sam Seder show –
much more than the Majority Report and I sure
hope we don’t lose it. I loved the sharp edge that shows
like MS and Seder’s shows have. I don’t need more
NPR.
Well, the end of the record store was bound to come around. We just lost our Tower and Coconuts…there are still some in FYE or some such in NYC but I think the its the Starbucks of the world that are gonna end up filling THAT void, as far as even downloads…..Just because you can be in a rest stop on any highway or in an airport and there is starbucks….I cant imagine that soon you wont be able to hook your ipod to a dock and download whatever is playing in store…not to mention that they have been pretty careful in their selection and they focus on more music that people who still buy CDs like…See Paul McCartney is gonna release is new record through Starbucks….
Sure they are a chain and some fo what theyve done is questionable and really not enough. I dont consider them a leader in changing the world (like, they have the water issue but if you research it, they only give 5 cents per bottle to the water thing and they charge $1.89 …but its something…not enough but I dont see Ploand spring or fuji doing much) and they do bring some level of awareness to labor issues.
I also like that in NYC they have started a salon type of social thing and they’ve booked people like Jim Carroll to do poetry readings and they’ve also started very carefully adding certain books….
I dont view Starbucks to be like Walmart…and knowing that Target and Walmart are not going anywhere Im thinking that its sort of more important to hold them accountable and make them be leaders in environmental and labor issues rather than just boycotting them….
But the record stores…bye-bye….
Fiber should kick the crap out of the DSL connection.
Cool! The woman asked me if it was a new neighborhood when I asked what the difference was. It’s not a new neighborhood. Although, I haven’t had any complaints about my DSL connection.
yeah Collette…Im also worried about the greens in general if they couldnt close this deal. I dont know if we know that sam was gonna get axed, but marc confirmed that they wanted to move him to nights without telling him…so he was being disrespected.
I think that the whole thing with Marc at this point is a matter of respect. he is not the normal radio guy who just lets himself be moved around like a chess piece and AAR is not a regular network….
No host lets the listeners know whats going on…its a radio rule…and marc broke that early on….thank god.
My Mom was saying at the time that hosts disappear and reappear all the time. They never explain.
AAR’s listeners demand much more accountability and are much more invested in the network. I would think that the Greens would want to hold on to that.
The thing that they have is MONEY…lots of it….They got the thing really cheap and it would be nothing to even pay off all the debt…so I dont understand being disrespectful and cheap…
Im wondering if Mark Green is really the fuck that they say he is!
what is fiber?…fiber optic?…where are they offering that?
Ill have to read…but Will has an appt and I should be in the shower…
he had a rock and roll party last night…tired
I think that the record stores may very well disappear but they will come back eventually. Like front porches on homes went away in the 50’s and are coming back now because we realized they create a sense of community. People will realize that record stores do the same. 🙁

Yeah, if the DSL is good, then it’s good. You have to be within a certain distance of the central office (on the wire, not as the crow flies), and the farther out you are, the worse the service. Here, you can get “up to” 3 Mpbs down DSL for $19.99. The FiOS (fiber) from Verizon is 10 Mbps down /2 Mbps up for $39.99, 20 Mbps/5 Mbps $49.99 and 50 Mbps/5 Mbps for $89.95. I’d love to get it, but I’m getting about 10 Mbps/1 Mbps with my cable connection, and I get a $10 discount for being part of SU, so it’s not really worth the hassle of changing. Except it’d be more upstream bandwidth for sedition radio (but there may not be much life for that left, either).
I agree. Supposedly they fixed the web stream and I would hope that Stephen Green is enough of a businessman to make sure
the infrastructure is kept up and the deadlines and payrolls are
met. But we do expect more from AAR. Progressive values,
integrity, fairness – Sam and Marc seem to be saying that something is very much lacking here.
Oh, no. I just built a new box for it, which should keep it running happily for the foreseeable future. I just meant that, as time goes on, it will become less and less relevant and interesting to people. Especially if there’s no Marc presence on the radio ever again. All good things, as they say.
Yeah, there’s usually always somebody listening. I have it listed on the ShoutCast directory, so maybe some new people will stumble upon it. I had hoped to get Marc and maybe Jim to do an “intro” and a few “id’s” that I could sprinkle around, but I guess he never got around to it. Some day I’d like to go in and clean up the file names and tags and all that, and build a better front end for it, but I’m too busy procrastinating.
Sam and the blogs. Right on. Everyone that reads Markos and Duncan Black probably knows who Sam Seder is.
If AAR loses Sam to NovaM for example, NovaM gets a huge boost through the blogging grapevine. It may not be big in radio terms but it is enormous in credibility and demographics. Malloy also has a long-standing connection to the blogs, but it is more through DemocraticUnderground and BartCop, which I believe have a small readership than the biggies.
Contrast that with the right-wing radio guys. The only guy that has has a real connection to the blog is that twit Hugh Hugetwit, I mean Hewitt. But I don’t think that gets him anywhere because it is a puny little echochamber for hateful people.
One central aspect of the U.S. attorneys firing is that the Justice Department (via a staffer for then-Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter (R-PA)) was able to slip in a provision to the Patriot Act Reauthorization bill that made it possible for the administration to appoint interim U.S. attorneys for an indefinite period without Senate confirmation. That way, the administration could install who they wanted for the rest of Bush’s term — like, say, Karl Rove’s former aide.
Justice Official William Moschella told McClatchy ten days ago that he’d sought the change “without the knowledge or coordination of his superiors at the Justice Department or anyone at the White House.” Just a rogue operator.
But look at what’s in the emails:
However, Moschella’s e-mails suggest that he discussed the need for proposed changes with other Justice Department officials on Nov. 11, 2005, around the time when the bill was being drawn up.
“We support eliminating the court’s role” in appointing interim U.S. attorneys, Moschella wrote to officials, including Michael Battle, the director of the Executive Office for U.S. Attorneys, “and believe the AG should have that authority alone.”
PJ, if it ever comes to that, please speak up. I don’t know about everyone else, but I listen to Sedition Radio a LOT, and I would go nuts if it weren’t there. And I’d be happy to defray part of the cost, or even subscribe if you need or want the cash.
Marc likes having it there too; he links to it from his web site.
preface…. I’m full of crap and have no authenticity to speak from. I’m still in my pajamas, afterall.
I never really thought that AAR was going to get Maron back.
When they dismantled Sedition and it resulted in Maron going back to LA? That was uprooting the foundation.
We all longed for Sedition to come back in some shape and form even though that was never going to really happen. Like trying to recreate any great moment. it’s not going to happen… just got to try for another great combination. Another creative Perfect Storm.
TMMS was just getting some of that magic when it was shook up.
AAR doesn’t seem like a great company… but I don’t think it really could at this point.
1. Start-up
2. Bankrupcy
3. Entertainment/content driven and motivated by money
4. Seems like radio novices etc.
5. Progressive/liberal expectations for morals, treatement of talent, treatment of listeners, business practices, not to mention what actually airs from the mouths of hosts.
Organizing Democrats is like herding cats… I can’t think what organizing progressive radio is like.
Herding feral cats into a 100 piece marching band that marches in a pattern that looks like herding cats.
And I like Steph as well. As some have said, her show isn’t anything new, edgy, or creatively vivacious. But it’s nothing new done pretty well. I don’t have many options nor much time so hey… Steph, Rachel, Sam (when Maron was on), and Sedition Radio.
I could only listen to snippets of his show when it was two hours but I haven’t downloaded an ep. for months.
I miss Riley when I listen to Sedition Radio… but I just can’t do his solo show. Actually, I can’t do most solo shows. The one guy/girl talking in a room thing gives me the creeps. I’m from Montana… one person in a room usually means the FEDS are gonna surround the house and ask him/her to release the children.
What I forgot to say was that there’s got to be a new show with a mostly new cast and crew (note I said MOSTLY) and with mostly new bits and characters.
It’ll be easier and better to make something new and awesome than try to recapture as much of the old show and dress it up in a new format.
I think it’s gonna be… “The Mark Green Show,” starring Mark Green, with special guest, Stephen Green, and a weekly segment on “How to Win Elections” co-hosted by Ralph Nader..
😀 painting download a newer episode riley basically has cohosts now! he actually talks to the guys now its much better. i actually look forward to his show now…… then again could have something to do with how horrible the rest of the aar lineup is nowadays. oh question has anyone heard of rachel maddow? i cant even tell you the last time i listened to her show.
Dagnabit, I was out in the rain, with my phone in my pocket, and it got wet and died. Now I need a new phone so that when nobody calls me, I’ll be there.
My wife listens to it, I think. I don’t much care for it, most of the time. Mostly, I listen to Sam, have Hartmann on and sorta pay attention, and then I have Randi on unless she’s particularly irritating, in which case I turn her off. I also listen to Ghost Radio sometimes, to get the real truth.
The discovery of a bizarre species of fossil whale from Australia with huge eyes and flesh-ripping jaws provides valuable new insights into the evolution of whales, researchers say.
The previously unknown species lived about 25 million years ago and was an early ancestor of modern baleen whales, which feed by filtering plankton from seawater. This group includes the blue whale, the largest animal ever to inhabit the planet.
But the newfound predatory whale likely hunted sharks and other fish despite its relatively small size and suggests that baleen whales weren’t always the toothless gentle giants we see in our oceans today.
And Jim the voice deity is a handsome man! Stephie keeps taking MY future husbands and she’s probably had plastic surgery so I’m going to take her sidekick.

Overton sounds like that is what they, The Young Turks, needed. I never liked Ben or whatever his name is. He makes me “crazy” mad. 😡

Again, I wonder, is it legal for the executive branch to dream up a law and to have a clerk insert it into an act, without the Senator’s knowledge.
If this is OK, I’m sure there are many things that legislative aides may be poised to include. How about articles of impeachment?
Oh, and whatever the bankruptcy papers said AAR owned Maron…. it was more.
if sams gone i want riley in his spot……
LMAO
Sean, what is with your man-crush on Riley?
And I repeat that I have no authority talking about any of this.
Oh…
And I posted another comment over at LTR.
Made a Gong Show reference. Hee hee.
Yep, just like when I was in school.

You’ll be sorry when he starts channeling the voice of Donald Rumsfeld during sex.
:rofl2:
Just saw I Think I Love My Wife today. Funny, especially if you like Chris Rock. 😀
Well, then I’ll have to practice my Barbara Bush the OLD GASH impression.

Hey PG, I’m feeling stupid tonight. (And I haven’t even started drinking yet!) What is LTR? I tried searching on it and came up empty. I want to read your snark. 😀
Well, then I’ll have to practice my Barbara Bush the OLD GASH impression.

Please, no discussion of Barbara Bush’s old gash. I’d like to have a meal again sometime in the next few days.
We could, however, discuss that of her granddaughters, especially since they are so fond of showing it off. 😳
If you get to bring up Rumsfeld during sex, I get to bring out the Ole Gash!
Kevin,
LTR – Liberal Talk Radio – The alternative media resource

RE 24 I just meant that, as time goes on, it will become less and less relevant and interesting to people. Especially if there’s no Marc presence on the radio ever again. All good things, as they say.
Comment by pjsauter — March 24, 2007 @ 11:52 am
I see Sedition Radio becoming a cult classic much like Elvis.

WebHubbleTelescope re 9 I have been listening to the Young Turks w/ Rick Overton as cohost this morning, the podcast from 3/15. It reminds me a lot of MS and Overton actually brings out more of the funny from Cenk. There is a great recurring bit where they make fun of Bush where he makes up a new word.
If anyone wants the MP3, I can e-mail.
Comment by WebHubbleTelescope — March 24, 2007
Overton sounds like that is what they, The Young Turks, needed. I never liked Ben or whatever his name is. He makes me “crazy” mad. 😡
Jill was great in the beginning, but she has waned and become a bit superficial. I like Cenk, and if Overton “works” with his dynamic … I will have to “bounce” between “This Is The Bill Press Show” and TYT 😉
