I really do hope Sam and Marc wind up somewhere else that will absolutely fucking bury AAR – at least in whatever time slots they wind up in. I’m really tired of all of this.

Does anybody understand why Imus isn’t or wasn’t on XM radio? For a long while, MSNBC was being simulcast on XM Radio but they chose not to rebroadcast the Imus radio show, which they were already running on cable TV, on the radio!

Heck, the best thing about this concept is that Sam could work ALL DAY on Sunday (Sam has his Friday commitments anyhow, ya know) and it would fit in with the patchwork of 1 & 2 hr shows on weekends.
Hear me out.
Sam could have an hour LIVE every other hour between the other weekend shows! NO MORE REPEATS! Heck Sam could do Sam’s Sunday Sermons in the AM and work into Sam’s Sunday Brunch. Around 4 pm et Sam could start the show with Sam’s Sunday Scoreboard, with lame sports analogies and his sidekick reading scores. Then a nice two-hour block of Sam’s Sunday Guests around 9 pm et , kinda like “Late Late Edition – the VERY VERY LAST WORD in Sunday talk” !!! Take THAT CNN!
THEN, make EVERY HOUR syndicated! That way, many more stations suffering from BAD RADIO SYNDROME on Sundays can a la carte Sam Sedar Sundays !!!
Sam Seder needs a forum and has been a STAUNCH DEFENDER of the progressive movement since The Majority Report took to the air 2 years ago. Heck, Maron and Janeane can be guest hosts too (mebbe the Greens might see some “green” in this arrangement and bygones).

Lionel occupies that classic talker position of debating people for the debate’s sake and occupying a contrarian position whenever he thinks he can get a good argument going. That is the traditional formula for talk shows where they are simply trying to attract listeners.

I want to understand why you like or appreciate Lionel. We have a local guy, Tom Mischke, on the super-talk station here that would blow Lionel out of the water. This guy is brilliantly talented, someone who can make up songs on the spot, and can talk in iambic pentameter if he wants to. One time he interviewed an author who was Gordon Lightfoot’s biographer and Mischke engaged in the interview in the same sing-songy style of “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”. Brilliant, I would say of his talent.
But I don’t listen to him any longer.
Why?
Because he shows enough contempt and disdain for his audience that I stopped listening. That to me is the big turnoff of any radio personality. I almost get that same feeling from Lionel.

He’s on WOR from 9-11 eastern time and he podcasts for FREE (like AAR should go BACK to). Personally, I find him an excellent reasonable debator who has opinions based on logic. I first found his show from a link, talking about hosts that are good talking down Right-Wingers… strangely enough, I think it was in an article talking about Seder. Hmm.
He’s also funny… but not in the slanted alternative comedy way that Seder and Maron and Janeane are. It works great for the time slot… not full on energy… like a smart funny professional old guy at a bar. I also think he’s well spoken and intelligent.
One BIG THING which got me was something some people over at airamericaradio.com are complaining about… but it’s something Maron has as well. He talked about some over-sensitivity in regards to someone’s jokes. Primarily making the point that something can be A FUCKING JOKE!!! Like how Maron talks about the “retarded.”
I think Mark Green (who was SO interesting that they trumped up that glorious intro for him on Sedition) has a subscription to Talkers magazine and is taking all his cues from there.
And according to the Fall ratings book, Lionel was tied with Stephanie Miller and Randi Rhodes for listeners. So he’s not UN-popular.
(p.s. but he is friends with Bill Donahue and fucking Lars Larson (who recently debated Stephanie Miller on Larry King and said that no one looks up to John Edwards)
Lionel’s got a disdain for a lot of his callers… and yeah, he makes the distinction.
I don’t listen to Lionel for funnies. It’s his logic, varying topics, legal background and point of view, and interaction with callers. And the fact that all of it is expressed in a manner that is occassionally funny but doesn’t hinge on that.

As for Sam, they could have waited for the first book, to see how he did, for starters. The mentality at AAR seems to continue to be, “if the show isn’t performing the way we’d like, kill it and bring in something worse.”
They should say, “gee, this is a good show. Let’s find out why we’re having problems selling it to the affiliates.” Do promotion, run contests, get some fucking sales people (oh, ‘scuse me, account executives) out on the road selling it. Get the hosts out to the existing affiliates to do live broadcasts (MS really hit its stride with the live shows, IMHO). I mean, WTF?
