Whoopie, the Dow closed at 13,000 yesterday. For me, that means, um, let me see…pretty much nothing. Gas is back up to three bucks a gallon, I broke my hydrometer, Iraq is still Iraq, and that goddamn 50-page paper isn’t exactly writing itself, is it? But the Dow is up, and CNN thinks news is a video of cat pretending to play the piano. Whoopdie-doo indeed.

ARREST! IMPEACH! then V. ๐
what show, dru?
Bill Moyers had a devastating show last night about the media collapse in the run up to war – to his credit, Russert showed up and took his lumps; others like Judy Miller didn’t, and Moyers named all the wimps at the end. Howie Kurtz got sympathetic treatement, only because, in his only finest hour, he had run a lengthy study condemning his own paper’s [WaPo] run up to war coverage.
You can probably pick the Moyers show up online at pbs.and see when its being repeated. its worth seeing.
http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/btw/watch.html
The PPS “thing” about the War in Iraq … sniff it even had Dan Rather. I have Olberman THX ROXIE … I think there is a link last night … I had just gotten on and have on PPS if it reruns … maybe in a few days … I was going to try again but I think someone put up link (or i am just “wish’n & hope’n ๐ )

Druid is talking about Bill Moyers’ Journal, which aired last night on PBS. It was an overview of how the media rolled over and laid down for the Bushies during the runup to the war.
It was OK but a little frustrating to watch, because people like Dan Rather were insinuating that they had no idea that the information coming out of the White House was bullshit, when there were lots of visionaries like PRACTICALLY EVERYONE ON THIS FUCKING BLOG who knew they were blowing smoke.
Although there were also interviews with a small number of journalists who knew better and were trying to get the word out.
Fear factor: If you watch a rerun of this, be prepared for the enormous size of Tim Russert’s head. You’ll think you’re looking into a funhouse mirror. Seriously. :omg:
And cresttwo is correct about Howie Kurtz.

Hugh Hewitt (aka Spew Spewitt, aka Huge Halfwit) had very good things to say about Bill Press a few days ago. Apparently the two had a love-in on a cable show (Howie Kurtz I think?), where both were lambasting NBC for showing the cho video. What media whores — they complain about NBC, yet devote inordinate amounts of time to talking up the incident anyways. Spewitt and Press are not only media whores but they are media whore scolds, the worst possible kind. The Yung Ticks and Malloy spent maybe one day on the topic before moving on.
man, that funeral last night was so horribly sad…my friend is adopting the 3 little girls and he is so wonderful with them…but the mother was only 39 and died within 7 months…leukemia….she was a pretty nice person…and really touched people…very outgoing: a trainer and nutritionist at the karate studio…the church was overflowing.
Real catholicism up close…eating the flesh of christ and all…lots of blood and death in the service. Very scary. But it seems like people get some comfort from it.
It is just too exact for me. I cant believe things that have actual fleshed out plans of who things are gonna be and who is gonna be there…and theflesh and blood of christ…and the alter boys…
I was looking for the bolt of lightening to come down on me, because that is a wrathful god in that church.
Tons of people from all different circles of my communities from Will’s school now and Will’s old school…Will’s nursery school…karate…all over the place…were there crying…and so many of them knew all the words to the call and reply thing that they do.
Maybe Im just totally missing something, but I cant see how most of that is even feasible, except that people seem to need some conduit to community. I was realizing then later when I went to the firehouse for the reception that the community is there anyway, and the extra layer of god is sorta …extra….
alot of people were telling me how growin gup catholic really scared the hell out of them…and how they would only go to church now for an event like this.
But I guess that this church community helped out quite a bit and this was their church.
as I said…i was looking over my shoulder ….with my little devil on the other one. This sorts of highly organized things really bring out the rebel in me.
people were kneeling on the floor because all the pews were packed! Kneeling on the floor praying….

also by the time I was 6 YEARS I knew Catholic Mass in Latin.
I have always worshiped the Ritual ….
Sometimes I think non-Catholics take all that Catholic mumbo-jumbo stuff more seriously than the Catholics do. I mean, maybe it’s just ‘cuz none of that ever took with me, but it’s just something that people do when somebody dies. You go, you sit through the mass, maybe you pay attention to what the priest is saying (I never did). :pope: Heard it all before.
There may have been a time when I knew the proper responses and shit. Mostly you just follow along with the couple of gung-ho people that know everything. There are always a few. When my brother got married, they did the full monty wedding mass, and I was in the front row with my siblings and whatnot. Now, I don’t get to church much (ever), but if you’re sitting in the back, you can follow the leader with the stand-sit-kneel little dance you’re supposed to do (apparently there are some sort of rules for that), but, heathens that we are, we were just sort of spontaneously popping up and down at different times, hoping maybe we’d get one right. I think we laughed through the whole thing.
When my dad died, the priest – who never knew him – started doing the usual pray for his soul ‘cuz we’re all sinners and shit like that, and I thought “who the fuck are you to say that? You better hope he’s praying for you, asshole.”
Now, when my mom died, we had the thing at the church where she went to school, and the priest was great. He told some stories that had been passed along by people she went to school with (my mother was a bit of a pisser, back in the day, unfortunately always in trouble because her father – a cop – always found out everything she did), and it was all very nice.
As for all the other stuff, like the body and blood and the smoke and the bells and all that, well, it’s just part of the show. :priest: I mean, you’re paying for the show, you better get one. But none of that ever had any actually meaning to (or affect on) me.
Which is why I’m going straight to hell, I guess. :jesus:
Unbelievable. How far do you think she’ll get with that? Where’s Johnny K Street with the odds on this one!
I have smelt much incence and I  Frankincense and Myrrh and burn DAILY. It is the different acts of worship. And as I said, although PARENTS were NOT practicing their faiths, mostly Grandmother (Lib) and she didn’t teach me … I learned ON MY OWN The Whole Mass In Latin by 6 years — no one taught me. Sisters and brother were not religious. When I knelt at outside the Cove of Mary’s at Midnight or when I would pass by, it was so beautiful and peaceful. … It was an oasis. Oh, also bells are a part of MOST (even buddhist) faiths.
:rofl2: Which is why Iรขโฌโขm going straight to hell, I guess.
Yeah, bells, incense, chicken blood. Whatever floats your boat. As long as I don’t catch any stigmata, and the government doesn’t require me to pretend to believe in any of it.
I mean, it’s all good, until you start seeing if witches float (or weigh the same as a duck).

HONOLULU – A tiny mite that has devastated mainland honeybee populations showed up in Honolulu hives for the first time this month and has now been confirmed in bee colonies across Oahu.
The infestation by varroa mites has led the state to ask beekeepers to restrict transport of bees around the islands. There are concerns it could threaten the Big Island’s thriving queen bee export industry, which has so far tested free of the mites.
“This is going to be for us a nightmare,” said Michael Kliks, head of the Hawaii Beekeepers’ Association and owner of Manoa Honey Co. “When I saw that mite I knew exactly what it was. I knew exactly what it meant and I fell to my knees and almost began to weep because it’s inexpressible what that sea change is for us in Hawaii.”

I also believe in Truth of Science. BUT with everything … IT MUST BE PROVEN. JUST Like in all I Believe, It Must Be Proven. But that is where the problem is. Science must be able to Prove, and with Spirit, it has been proven to me, but is not “proven” to others, of course — shoot even if was proven — one Should Question — and I NEED to have it PROVEN TO ME 3 TIMES, to believe. There is no “truth” in science. The scientific method comes up with hypotheses, creates experiments to “prove” or “disprove” these hypotheses, and then attempts to recreate the results of the experiment. It’s a wonderful process for what it is, and has been responsible for a lot of amazing things, but it’s not the only (or even the “best,” depending on the subject manner) way to describe the universe and all that’s in it. Thing are “true” until it turns out they aren’t true. Then something else becomes true for a while. And there are plenty of things that can never be proved or disproved, and attempting to apply the scientific method to these things only serves to limit our understanding, not expand it.

From today’s AP story on the Senate vote setting benchmarks on Iraq funding:
“No Democrats joined the 45 Republicans in voting against it. Missing from the vote were GOP Sens. John McCain (news, bio, voting record) of Arizona and Lindsey Graham (news, bio, voting record) of South Carolina, both staunch advocates of the president’s Iraq policy.
Sen. Joseph Lieberman (news, bio, voting record), I-Conn., sided with Republicans in opposing the bill.”

this gravel guy is pretty wild…I like him.
Who’s the gravel guy?
Sorry…In the debate on MSNBC….
He is a dem senator from Alaska, I think…? Hes a real pistol.
No guns in the White House?
Washington diary: Al Gore running
Gravel was a US Senator from Alaska, from 69 – 81. He is the person who inserted the Pentagon Papers in to the public record (he inserted over 4,000 pages into the Congressional Record of s Senate Subcommittee on Buildings and Grounds, which he chaired). These were by the Beacon Press as the “Senator Gravel Edition” and are the most complete edition of the Pentagon Papers ever published (edited and annotated by Noam Chomsky and Howard Zinn, with an additional volume of analytical articles on the origins and progress of the war).
In 1971 he began a “one-man filibuster” against renewing the draft and was able to block the legislation for five months before Nixon and Senate Republicans agreed to allow the draft to expire.
He started the Democracy Foundation and has been pushing for Direct Democracy on the Federal level.
By the way, if you would like to vote for (or against) direct democracy, you may do so here. I voted a few years ago, personally.
Gravel’s my guy!
I wish Biden had never voted for that bankruptcy bill or pinched that speech. And why isn’t anyone talking about how much his hair cost?

Fun with numbers.
When Nixon was forced to resign in 74, his approval rate was 24%

Hey seanie..I saw van morrison last fall here in seattle.
You should go!
Ok I’m pushing this thing to 100 :knit:
Well, as Gore’s representative up here I am thrilled everyone is pro Gore, now. I can only speak for me — I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN ON GORE’S SIDE, never Edwards. Many here were very condescending towards me and wanted me to stop speaking of GORE! Melina you even put Edwards or Hillary or ANYONE except Gore, But Glad You Like Him Now. (PJ always “liked” Gore, that I saw) but many (even here) did not believe or even think He Should EVER Run.
But I can see a Gore / Edwards ticket. I think Edwards would accept it, this time. I like Edwards, but I have always believed “Gore is the One”. I have gotten pins from CAFE PRESS when I ran a Dem table a year ago last August saying, “Gore in ’08”. MOST Dems in this County also, like most here, did not even venture to contemplate the possibilities that he would run.

I think Gore and Obama or Edwards would be good. After 4 or 8 years as VP for Gore they should be in good position to follow and it would help them overcome the “young’ or “inexperienced” labels. I think that if Gore ran he might only want 4 years. Just a hunch based on his seeming reluctance to get in now because he seems to be enjoying his new life and that is a tough job.
