Cut to colonel’s office. Colonel is seated at desk.
Colonel Come in, what do you want?

Watkins I’d like to leave the army please, sir.
Colonel Good heavens man, why?
Watkins It’s dangerous.
Colonel What?
Watkins There are people with guns out there, sir.
Colonel What?
Watkins Real guns, sir. Not toy ones, sir. Proper ones, sir. They’ve all got ’em. All of ’em, sir. And some of ’em have got tanks.
Colonel Watkins, they are on our side.
Watkins And grenades, sir. And machine guns, sir. So I’d like to leave, sir, before I get killed, please.
Colonel Watkins, you’ve only been in the army a day.
Watkins I know sir but people get killed, properly dead, sir, no barley cross fingers, sir. A bloke was telling me, if you’re in the army and there’s a war you have to go and fight.
Colonel That’s true.
Watkins Well I mean, blimey, I mean if it was a big war somebody could be hurt.
Colonel Watkins why did you join the army?
Watkins For the water-skiing and for the travel, sir. And not for the killing, sir. I asked them to put it on my form, sir – no killing.
Colonel Watkins are you a pacifist?
Watkins No sir, I’m not a pacifist, sir. I’m a coward.
Colonel That’s a very silly line. Sit down.
Watkins Yes sir. Silly, sir. (sits in corner)

There was a brief and amazing windstorm, yesterday. All of a sudden it started to blow and I had to run out to save the garbage pails which were flung across he street and caught between cars (They’re the rubbery type thank goodness.) Pollen and dirt were being picked up by gusts and flown in dark clouds against buildings. And, of course my dog, Emily the Lion Hearted, refused to eat and went to hide in a closet.
The White House has come out in opposition to a proposal by Congress to raise military pay by 3.5 percent, according to a report by Army Times.
The administration had originally asked for only a 3 percent increase in pay, equal to private sector pay increases, effective January 1, 2008. The House Armed Services Committee raised the increase to 3.5 percent for 2008, and also recommended increases in 2009 through 2012 that would be 0.5 percent higher than private sector raises.
“The slightly bigger military raises are intended to reduce the gap between military and civilian pay that stands at about 3.9 percent today,” according to the report. “Under the bill, HR 1585, the pay gap would be reduced to 1.4 percent after the Jan. 1, 2012, pay increase.”
The report continues, “Bush budget officials said the administration ‘strongly opposes’ both the 3.5 percent raise for 2008 and the follow-on increases, calling extra pay increases ‘unnecessary.'”

The bill provides for a guest worker program that would allow immigrants to work temporarily in the US, although they would still live in their home country. The legislation also would allow the estimated 11 million to 12 million immigrants already in the country to come forward and apply for a probationary “Z visa” that would allow them to stay in the country legally and eventually put them on the path to citizenship.

Nation’s minority numbers top 100M
Updated 6h 50m ago
THE GRAYING OF AMERICA
By Haya El Nasser and Paul Overberg, USA TODAY
The nation’s minority population has topped 100 million for the first time and now makes up about a third of the USA, a symbolic milestone that signals more challenges for communities adapting to diversity.
Hispanics are fanning out to more states across the nation, creating a sharp contrast between their predominantly young numbers and those of an aging white society, according to Census population estimates out Thursday.
So, PJ, have you changed the litter box today? :cat: (You said there wasn’t much to do and it occurred to me you could be using the time to change the litterbox and do other important kitty maintenance tasks.
After all, is the cat not the most important person in the house?
Tomorrow I get high speed and a notebook that’s wifi enabled. I’m SO DAMN EXCITED! I can blog at truck stops! Be like one of the wild and crazy kids!
Even though Colorado passed a very draconian immigrants bill last year the refusal of the state social service people to enforce it and the cost of enforcement made it ineffective. The Hispanic ( Spanish speaking) community is also know by most to be very dangerous if you attempted to deport them . They would make the 1960s look like a cake walk ,. :reaper: :reaper:

I think the demodorps living in the inside the beltway vacuum think that the voters are not paying attention and are applauled at the emails and phone calls they get. The problem is what does the voter do in 2008 if nether party meets their needs. Do they not vote or do they :gate: :omg: :omg: :jason: :jason: :fist:
Gravel and Paul both speak the truth .. if they are removed from the competition early in the game does the voter just assume the fetal position and suck their thumb or :gate: :omg: :jason: :fist: ??
One of the problems is that the “truth” spoken by Gravel and Paul. is diluted by the centrist move of the left wing media like Fat Heady and AAR .. One must find a way to respond. :gate: :omg: :jason: :fist:
andy, you made me visit the Buffers on my iPod this morning which I do often. I have the Buffalo Springfield box set so I have a few tunes and some alternate versions and stripped down Neil Young demos and I don’t care what Kristapunk says, I’ll let the freak flag fly even if flying on the ground is wrong.
Blue, the pc will bring up a similar box asking for the information. Its basically the same.
Dru, I am only on myspace to view others sites and was also forced…so I tend to turn down all the friend requests.
I hear that everyone who is anyone is really on facebook anyway!
I think that alot of musicians and music companies pay people to send out friend requests because I get alot for some sorta strange music types.
I have one of my favorite songs up there…i wish that blogger offered such an easy player…though I would like more choice.
I dont like the place anyway.
I was just leaving Will’s school after parent teacher conferences that I dragged myself to…and Mom called me all delighted at how ballistic Michael Savage is going over this immigration bill. I dont know whats in it…I guess it has 1000+ pages and isnt really actually in yet…I think its really due on MOnday…but savage is insane and demanding that all of his listeners send letters of protest to the certain politicians on his site…because he writes of people like “Chappaquiddick Kennedy” etc…as not being of use in his drive to kill this….
Man, it must be good.
I dont have a strong stand on this particular thing because I feel like our meddling and globalization has caused alot of it, and at the same time we also need to roll our borders up a bit more for the time being…but those who are here (and I know quite a few illegals) tend to be really hard working and really devoted to making a go of it here.
A real immigration plan would provide things that cost money, like social services and support for immigrants to be able to meld into America. If Savage wants people to speak English then English classes have to be made available. and I daresay that if people are coming we should regulate it so that these corporations cant take advantage of them and let them pay taxes.
But most of all we need to go after the corporations hiring them and taking advantage of them…give them some power to demand a decent wage….and limit how much they can send back.
But all of that costs money…and it smacks of providing services to people rather than outsourcing fence building to Halliburton. Is that socialism vs. capitalism?…nah…
hey I downloaded a couple of episodes of the David Spade showbiz show and it was really funny…I laughed out loud quite a few times…
I was watching it in the car ..yes, while driving, but the ipod was right in the steering wheel so it was less distracting than a GPS or whatever….
andy, there have been some good videos on C&L and YouTube of Hitchens in the last few days. It seems like the demise of mr. falwell works in well for promoting a book against religious fanaticism. typoof
yeah…funny …I don’t really like him much in anythingout there, but he is a good mean and snarky Hollywood reporter…some of it is just too obvious, but some is really funny. he has some OK writers on that show.

a.i.v. Test For Echo … … RUSH
Thanks, Druid.

Senators, White House reach deal on immigration
(snip)
The bill provides for a guest worker program that would allow immigrants to work temporarily in the US, although they would still live in their home country. The legislation also would allow the estimated 11 million to 12 million immigrants already in the country to come forward and apply for a probationary “Z visa” that would allow them to stay in the country legally and eventually put them on the path to citizenship.

I am always amazed at how communities lobby to keep military installations when the average “worker” probably makes less than 25k a year, never buys a house, does all his shopping at Walmart and probably has a wife with a couple of kids who can apply for welfare or at least food stamps. :paranoid: :paranoid:

Nation’s minority numbers top 100M
Updated 6h 50m ago
THE GRAYING OF AMERICA
By Haya El Nasser and Paul Overberg, USA TODAY
The nation’s minority population has topped 100 million for the first time and now makes up about a third of the USA, a symbolic milestone that signals more challenges for communities adapting to diversity.
Hispanics are fanning out to more states across the nation, creating a sharp contrast between their predominantly young numbers and those of an aging white society, according to Census population estimates out Thursday.

And they often vote. :reaper: :reaper:
In Colorado the Hispanic vote was credited for electing democrats to the state legislature. :paranoid:
So, PJ, have you changed the litter box today? :cat: (You said there wasn’t much to do and it occurred to me you could be using the time to change the litterbox and do other important kitty maintenance tasks.
After all, is the cat not the most important person in the house?
Tomorrow I get high speed and a notebook that’s wifi enabled. I’m SO DAMN EXCITED! I can blog at truck stops! Be like one of the wild and crazy kids!
And the day after is Maron, baybee!

Iraq is on the verge of collapse: report
BAGHDAD (Reuters) – Iraq’s government has lost control of vast areas to powerful local factions and the country is on the verge of collapse and fragmentation, a leading British think-tank said on Thursday.

Dear PJ
…I am expecting house-guests this weekend one of which has a new wifi card on a PC notebook. I have set up my Airport as invisible to prying eyes. With a Mac I just go to airport and select Other and I can enter the name and password. But on a PC…I know not what to do. I don’t want it to cause my blog pals huge frustrations and conniptions :knit2:
What do we do?
I think the demodorps living in the inside the beltway vacuum think that the voters are not paying attention and are applauled at the emails and phone calls they get. The problem is what does the voter do in 2008 if nether party meets their needs. Do they not vote or do they :gate: :omg: :omg: :jason: :jason: :fist:
Gravel and Paul both speak the truth .. if they are removed from the competition early in the game does the voter just assume the fetal position and suck their thumb or :gate: :omg: :jason: :fist: ??
Fred, :rofl2: I was going to say something relevant, but I can’t get “passed” (just a wee pun) 52. :rofl2:

andy, you made me visit the Buffers on my iPod this morning which I do often.
Aw jeesh. Wolfy’s lost his job. How’s he gonna find a horse-faced woman to have sex with him now? :sammy:
OMG David Spade……..funnny??!!
