About 3,500 US military have been killed in Iraq, so far. By even conservative estimates, some 70,000 Iraqi civilians have died, with the real number most likely over half a million – just since we were forced to go to war with the army we had, rather than the army we’d liked to have had. One thing that really struck me the other day was dubya saying something to the effect of “yeah, I know it’s gonna be a bloody summer with a lot of casualties.” You could tell from his tone that he just didn’t give a shit. For whatever reason it is that he’s gotten us into this mess, he really just doesn’t give a shit how many people have to die or be crippled for life. Neither does anybody who voted to fund this occupation without a timetable for withdrawal. And they’ll be the ones yammering the loudest today about sacrifice and honor – these despicable bastards who have never sacrificed anything, and are utterly without honor. They all make me sick.
So, anyhow, enjoy your picnics and barbecues or whatever it is you have planned today (for me, it will be washing my underwear, and hanging out with the dog; the closest I’ll be coming to a barbecue is pulling burgers and sausages out of the cat litter box). Back to work tomorrow. Doesn’t that suck?

The fools calling C-span say we should keep politics out of memorial day and just honor the dead … Now one has to wonder …. why oh why are the dead dead.. politics… politics .. and yet more politics :reaper: :reaper:
Good morning.
I have nothing but admiration for those who can listen to the fools who call c-span. They always make me think that there is no hope. Then I read what you guys say and I feel much better.
PJ, nice to see more than one sentence from you. I see this working business has a definite downside.
Some of the scarier c-span callers remind me of the letters Son of Sam used to send to Jimmy Breslin, before they caught him. Breslin wrote that he thought the mass killer must be a genius, because he understood the use of a semi-colon! Wrongo.
Don’t you wonder what callers that the C-Span filterers are not letting on the air?
After being cut off, they must promptly put the phone down and call up Michael Savage.
I remember Eric Alterman on c=span trying to patiently explain to the great unwashed why Iraq was a sideshow, and that its made us less safe, and that Saddam had nothing to do with 9-11, etc, only to have his first caller, of questionable literacy, correct him, saying that “they hit us on 9-11, and when somebody hits you you gotta hit them back”, and the look of despair on Alterman’s face was positively tragic and hilarious at the same time.
Time to get ready for the parade. :sammy:
Yeah, between the last few weeks of school, working, and now being alone for the last couple of weeks, inhaling the fumes from the litter box (eat-shit-puke-eat-shit-puke; that’s all these cats do), my brain is even more feeble than it used to be.
There was a time when I used to really like Washington Journal. I was always amazed that somebody would mention a topic, and the host would dig through the pile of papers to pull out the Andalusia Star News with a highlighted article all about it. How the hell they get up and read all those newspapers is beyond me.
But I just got so friggin’ aggravated by the callers, I couldn’t take it any more. Except for the guy that called in once and asked Pedro if he shaved his balls. That was pretty funny (no answer from Pedro, however).
So y’all probably saw this, but the Department of Homeland Security sure seems to be doing a heckuva job.
Hey, if you wear contacts, be careful.
pj
my cats usually puke after they eat and before they shit.
Good Morning :joe:
So, I went to see that Body World exhibit. Weird. I thought it was a little boring and a little creepy. I know they were trying to be artsy about the poses and stuff but it was just weird 😯
Is that the one with the freeze dried Chinese prisoners, Krista?
I so want to see that one…they seems to have numerous ones in different cities now…big questions as to where the bodies came from. Apparently the ones in NYC claimed that they were prisoners who had signed papers to give their bodies to science…huh?…who knows…
Good morning everyone…
I need the podcast of sammy’s show…maybe a torrent will become available…soon…
I didn’t know who the people were in the exhibit. I didn’t read much of he literature because it was so crowded. Freeze dried Chinese prisoners, huh? One has to wonder… since the Chinese are really good at coming up with horrifying things to do to the human body while it’s still alive….. :tinfoil:
Oozing corpses raising eyebrows
Oh my god Vern…thats horrifying. I think that in the surge of popularity of this exhibit they have had to step up the drying process or something….
There has been a question about where the bodies come from from the first showing, but this oozing thing is just icky.
Who knows?…supposedly they were prisoners, and people say that they are very small stature which indicates that they had bad nutrition…of course there is no way to trace them if they are form China’s prison system.
Suddenly all of these cities have this show, so they must have had to hustle with the bodies…ugh…what a way to make a living!
EEEEKKKKKK!!
:omg:
vernon: the best part of the article is the headline.
we used to have a headline writer (never found out who) on the seattle p.i. who wrote great punny heads. my favorite was an article about citizen review of an osha (oceanographic something admin) project: “osha faces pier pressure”
oops. osha is occupational health and safety. can’t remember the oceanographic admin acronym but you get the point.
aw now i remember – noaa: national oceanographic and atmospheric administratiion….i think.
i can just picture dozens of oozing plasticized corpes with permanently raised eyebrows.
well, off to dreamland. nighty night all.
Endangered, hunted, smuggled and now abandoned, 5,000 of the world’s rarest animals have been found drifting in a deserted boat near the coast of China.
The pangolins, Asian giant turtles and lizards were crushed inside crates on a rickety wooden vessel that had lost engine power off Qingzhou island in the southern province of Guangdong. Most were alive, though the cargo also contained 21 bear paws wrapped in newspaper.
According to conservation groups, the haul was discovered on one of the world’s most lucrative and destructive smuggling routes: from the threatened jungles of south-east Asia to the restaurant tables of southern China

Poisoned pet food, poisoned toothpaste, killing endangered species, sounds like neo-con heaven.
PJ and Roxie: I have had puking cats now since 1986. IU’m talking at least once a week puking, usually on the bed. After this business with the melamine in the cat food I switched my cats to Innova and Abundant Life (both kibble), and there has only been one puke out of each cat since; and those were mostly liquid. You might try these foods and see if they help.
If there was any doubt what the soldier on the ground thinks, read this.
Memorializing the Deadly Myth of John Wayne
While many of his contemporaries, including Henry Fonda, Clark Gable and Ronald Reagan, served in the armed forces during World War II, the lead in such wartime sagas as 1945’s “They Were Expendable,†1948’s “Fort Apache†and 1968’s “The Green Berets†did not. Wayne was not only missing in action during the 1940s’ liberation of the Philippines and Europe, he wasn’t a cavalry officer, a Vietnam commando or a Leatherneck—flying or otherwise—for he was never in the military.
Are any of us even surprised anymore?
I was trying to find video of Pete Seeger singing “Waste Deep in the Big Muddy” and failed. I thought for sure it would be somewhere.
I did find this though which might only be of interest to Roxie and me.
:tommygun:
Here
is WAIST deep etc Those homophones will get you in trouble :tommygun:
 :smack:
No :crap: !
Thanks!
The Seegar clip brought back memories: was that from the Smothers Brothers Show? It was that exact song which got the CBS execs angry, because “The Big Fool” was obviously LBJ. But of course, everything today is so different, and we’re so advanced over those dopes in the 60’s, right?
[looks like Pete was doing some fancy footwork on some of those guitar breaks – didn’t remember this part].
Great song for today.
Anyone catch Al Gore on Charlie Rose?
Thanks, C2, I just jumped in on the Gore re-run and only missed about 10 minutes.
I think that is the Smothers Brothers clip.
Since no one has mentioned last night’s 60 Minutes yet, please allow me to mention something that’s been pissing me off since I watched it last night. It concerns the father who said that he supports Bush’s bullshit war because we need to fight back against the people who lashed out at us on 9/11.
Uh, Sarge, most of them were Saudis. And Osama is hiding out in Afghanistan, NOT Iraq.
It’s almost SIX FUCKING YEARS after 9/11, and the story is still a mass of confusion to the confused masses. The government of this country continues to promote fear and confusion in an attempt to keep its citizens under wraps.
ENOUGH. :fu:
I’m graduating from my job-enrichment course a week from Wednesday. My speech will be about conquering fear. Most of the content has to do with public-speaking, but I’ll be working some political content in there too. This could be interesting, as the woman who manages our facility has a son who is in training for the Secret Service, so I’m guessing her politics may lean a little to the right of mine.
How do we conquer fear? Attitude, skills and knowledge. And I’m taking a page from the Marc Maron songbook and throwing in liberal (pardon the pun) dashes of the funny. As Mary Poppins used to say, just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down.
Although I typed the word poop three times before I was actually able to spell Mary Poppins correctly, so make of that what you will.. 😆
They actually emptied the dumpster today, unusual for a holiday, so I guess I should take time to cast stuff away in preparation for my move in a couple of weeks, but just needed to get that rant off my chest. I’m glad this blog is here, and I’m glad all of you are out there doing what you’re doing.
Hey, Kev, your speech should say that we shouldn’t conquer fear, because our preznit wants us to be afraid (very afraid) all of the time, so that we don’t notice that all of our civil liberties have been taken away, and our infrastructure is crumbling as we throw good money (and lives) after bad in a war and occupation based on lies. Remember, the only thing our president has to fear, is if we don’t fear.
Oh, and then maybe paraphrase something from Dick Cheney. 😉
eya gang!
just finishing some writing,
life is good and i’m gonna cook something interesting.
meanwhile we have all the military to care for here.

Sales of Music,
Long in Decline,
Plunge Sharply
Rise in Downloading
Fails to Boost Industry;
A Retailing Shakeout
By ETHAN SMITH
March 21, 2007; Page A1
In a dramatic acceleration of the seven-year sales decline that has battered the music industry, compact-disc sales for the first three months of this year plunged 20% from a year earlier, the latest sign of the seismic shift in the way consumers acquire music.
The sharp slide in sales of CDs, which still account for more than 85% of music sold, has far eclipsed the growth in sales of digital downloads, which were supposed to have been the industry’s salvation.

Teetering Musharraf Buoyed by U.S. Alliance
Pakistani Leader Wins Administration Praise Despite Move Away From Democracy
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, May 27 — As confidence in Gen. Pervez Musharraf falls at home and abroad amid allegations he is moving away from democracy and becoming increasingly autocratic, the Pakistani president has had at least one unwavering ally: the United States.
Pakistanis — particularly opposition figures — are watching for signs that that will change. Any indication of weakening support from the United States, they say, could spell the end of Musharraf’s teetering administration. But policymakers and analysts here and in Washington insist that is unlikely because the United States lacks a Plan B in Pakistan and is uncomfortable with alternatives to a man who has been considered a vital ally since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Maybe it’s just that most of the music out there these days (at least, the shit the major record labels are pushing) sucks.
Mom was reminding me of an older gentleman that we met in some diner or something over a year ago who knew all sorts of political movers and shakers…when she said that she likes Richardson, he said, ” well you know, its well known that he drinks…thats why he has a problem keeping his weight steady…”
I don’t view Richardson as a real contender, but I also sorta like him…but I don’t think he will ever get through.
if he does rise, they will pull whatever it is they’ve got on him out of a hat and that will be that…
It shouldn’t matter considering that our president is a coke-head/dry drunk/psycho-pharm head , but I think that its the press and the powers that be in the parties that decide this stuff more than the actual evidence of whatever problems or actions of the particular candidate(s)….

Our town wants to suspend recycle pickup through the summer as part of budget cuts that are hitting everything from schools to
…um…garbage…
But the problem is that the garbage men (as opposed to the outsourced and non union recycle pickup) are gonna have so much more trash to pick up that its likely gonna cost more in overtime and make up the difference…not to mention the environmental problems…
some of us will haul our stuff to the recycle station, but most wont.
What idiots..!
Sicko trailer. Should be good.
Most of the garbage haulers in Colorado charge you to pick up the recycle.. Waste Management is the BNSFs second largest customer right behind Excel Energy and their coal deliveries .. Something like 50 car ladings a day
They say most of the recycle goes to China
:reaper: :reaper:

NYC suspended recycling to save money and discovered that it didn’t save any. We’re back to recycling.
They’ll do the more traditional thing of giving out more tickets. Brings in revenue. Works great.
This is pretty interesting. Free through June 6.

So I’m back in the residence halls and am slowly getting past the feeling of “OMG I WANT TO MOVE TO ROGERS PARK!!!” The residence halls are just full of shit and I feel done with it. Yes, it’s bitterness from being turned down for TWO jobs within the school (the radio gig and then SPA)… but I feel nearly over it. Especially since I have a roommate this summer. She’s not here yet but we’ll see. I’m hoping that she’s under 21 so I can get her to move (or get myself to move) since I’ll be a drinkin’.
The show on Saturday went alright. The audience was bad. The show being geared toward that audience was bad, etc. I got some nice compliments about how I handled the audience before and during my performance (african cab drivers LOVE me)… somebody actually yelled “You’re not funny!” while I was onstage. I didn’t realize it until afterwards. I responded (onstage) with “Well, I’m not trying to be funny. This is just the warm up for my pole dancing act later on.”
Luckily, I went to an open mic on Sunday night and proceeded to smash any lasting self-esteem I had about that. Not neccesarily a bad thing. That was my 12th time going up on stage doing comedy and that’s only been since Easter.
And this is the reason I want to move to Rogers Park. I FUCKING LOVE THIS PLACE. This is what my first coffee hang-out place dreamt it would grow up to be.
WOW! painting girl:
who wouldn’t want to live in rogers park?
congrats on your grit — no way i’d have the guts to go on stage.
