So, back to work again today, just when the dog was getting used to having me around again. Usually, the Tuesday after a three-day weekend is even worse than a regular Monday, and this will probably be pretty crappy, since I have to go to some meeting this morning (hopefully it won’t last too long). Oh well, the only way to get it over with is to get it started, so I guess I better get going.
FIRST!!! Wake up everybody! If I have to be awake this early, someone else should be suffering along with me. π
Speaking of Bill Richardson, he seems like a nice guy, but if he thinks he’s bringing Yankees and Red Sox fans together, he’s more coked-up than the Current Occupant.

“Good Riddance Attention Whore”
by CindySheehan
Mon May 28, 2007 at 09:57:01 AM PDT
I have endured a lot of smear and hatred since Casey was killed and especially since I became the so-called “Face” of the American anti-war movement. Especially since I renounced any tie I have remaining with the Democratic Party, I have been further trashed on such “liberal blogs” as the Democratic Underground. Being called an “attention whore” and being told “good riddance” are some of the more milder rebukes.

Taxpayers on the hook for $59 trillion
Source: USA Today
The federal government recorded a $1.3 trillion loss last year Γ’β¬β far more than the official $248 billion deficit Γ’β¬β when corporate-style accounting standards are used, a USA TODAY analysis shows.
snip
Modern accounting requires that corporations, state governments and local governments count expenses immediately when a transaction occurs, even if the payment will be made later.
The federal government does not follow the rule, so promises for Social Security and Medicare don’t show up when the government reports its financial condition.
snip
Bottom line: Taxpayers are now on the hook for a record $59.1 trillion in liabilities, a 2.3% increase from 2006. That amount is equal to $516,348 for every U.S. household. By comparison, U.S. households owe an average of $112,043 for mortgages, car loans, credit cards and all other debt combined.

You have three guesses as to the next big one to file for chapter 11 and the first two don’t count.
Not getting that check each month will come as quite a shock to a lot of rethugs too. :reaper: :reaper:
attention whore? what bullshit that is! if you’ve seen or heard her, you can tell how genuine and authentic she is.
what she is, is a single-issue activist. her son got killed in iraq for bullshit reasons and she’s not about to get over it or compromise.
how is different that witch coulter saying that the 911 widows never enjoyed anything so much as their husbands’ deaths. :yuk:
I am not sure how long this “we are the greatest country on earth” charade can go on.. Ron Paul on the thug bot side and Gravel on the dem side both seem aware that all is not ok below decks on the SBR Titanic all the others are still living in denial and only want to go party in the first class dining room :reaper: :reaper:
ugh…another morning…
Bird good…slept slightly longer with thicker formula…Will hurt his back and made a huge fuss about going to school…
I expect a call to come get him any minute…
I dont care what anyone says abotu sheehan…she was someone who spoke out and did something…she brought light to the darkness at a time when we needed some illumination and people needed to go somewhere and do something…
and Im sure the cause will go on until this lousy war is over.
I had a conversation with someone about what would happen if the government defaulted and they said “well the politicians in power would most certainly not get reelected” .. I pointed out that a bunch of old people with canes and wheel chairs would not be any more effective against the DC police with their body armor and automatic weapons than the war protesters with their cardboard tubes in hand have been.. And when the old people go home how many days , weeks and months can they hold out without that monthly check :reaper: :reaper:
The bird thing is remarkably easy to me because it takes just 10 minutes to feed it….its eating so well now…its not like when Will was little and I had to get up and sit in the rocking chair for half an hour, only to wake up a couple of hours later having nodded off while nursing him…And he thinks he knows back pain…ha!
well, we would have a huge die off worse than the heatwave in paris that killed so many old folks…and it would look bad…but would we get humanitarian aide from other countries to save our elderly and poor starving?? I dont know…
Al Franken is about to be featured on the Today show…I sent him some $$…I am fond of him…and actually, if he didnt win, maybe he would consider coming back to radio….
That is desperation for ya!!
M- Sorry if I missed, but, what kind of bird is it?
As to back pain, acupuncture, massage, and herbal patches are coverd by the national health, here. x-rays and pain pille are covered, too. Medicine East and West are both supported. Cool, huh?
Good Morning :joe:
Cindy Sheehan has come to the same conclusion as many of my friends. The only difference is she tried to change things. I think maybe she burned out by making that her only focus. It’s hard to keep hope when you start looking closely at this country. π
Cindy has sacrificed much to try and end this occupation, the betrayal last week by the Dems was the last straw. I don’t know if I could have hung in as long as she did.
Well, I hope she doesn’t give up completely. I think she did a lot in 2 years. It takes a long time to change peoples minds, it should be measured in geologic time, not real time. And minds probably change more quickly now than in the distant past before modern communication. She needs to look at things from above sometimes.
If Al Gore Were President…
Al as our pres. It is still too close to the bone to think about it, for me. s***. :40:

mornin! Yay Melina! yay lil bird!
cindy got a lot of support in the threads at DU.
i noticed that she missed that completely. she was a superb representative though.
as long as they can play this two party gambit they can remain in control almost effortlessly.
Yay Painting Girl! WTG! comedy is a two way street with most people in wheelchairs.
I think Cindy would have been better off being the “Peace Mom” instead of letting herself get co-opted by other interest groups and spouting the A.N.S.W.E.R. left crap. I think she felt there was power in numbers, but those aren’t the numbers she needed. The doctrinaire left hasn’t accomplished anything since 1962. That said, I don’t blame her one bit for throwing in the towel. If the Democrats aren’t interested in ending this war, why should she knock herself out? She’s done all she can to draw attention to the families of the fallen.
Roxie- Thanks for the good words on the other page.
Remember when it was going around that Cindy was going to run for office? A California Rep seat. THAT was what I didn’t like about her.
Totally agree about the single issue thing. She has all the authority and more to speak about the war issue… what conflict does to families. I love her for that.
And THIS is the awesome place that makes me want to move to Rogers Park. Sweet potato fries, coffee in normal generic cups and progressive politics (and a general store!!!).
What has happened to Druid?
On Tuesday, peace activist Cindy Sheehan appeared on The Ed Schultz Show to talk about her recent declaration that she is leaving the anti-war movement.
Sheehan starts off the radio interview sounding tired and dispirited. She explains that she has kept pushing herself because “I can’t say no, especially when people are dying” but that the recent failure of the Democrats to vote against the war caused her to conclude, “I think I’ve gone as far as I can in this movement.”
Sheehan’s tone then becomes stronger and more positive as she looks to the future, making it clear that she is not giving up activism. She says, “We’re gonna see what other direction we can come at it, because obviously the direction that we’re going has stopped being effective. … We’re gonna close up the factory, we’re gonna retool, and we’re gonna see how we can come at this problem from a different angle.”

Embattled UC professor could be fired
DENVER- The president of the University of Colorado has recommended that a professor who likened some Sept. 11 victims to a Nazi should be fired, according to the professor and the school.
Ward Churchill, a tenured professor of ethnic studies, has denied the allegations and threatened a lawsuit if he is dismissed.
CU President Hank Brown made the recommendation in a 10-page letter sent to the chair of the committee that handles tenure issues. University spokeswoman Michele McKinney confirmed published reports about the recommendation Monday but said the school would not make the letter public.

Russia test-launches new ICBM
By JIM HEINTZ, Associated Press
MOSCOW – Russia on Tuesday test-launched a new intercontinental ballistic missile capable of carrying multiple independent warheads, and a top government official said it could penetrate any defense system, a news agency reported.
The new missile would modernize Russia’s stockpile at a time of rising tensions with the West.
The ICBM was fired from a mobile launcher at the Plesetsk launch site in northwestern Russia, and its test warhead landed on target about 3,400 miles away on the Far Eastern Kamchatka Peninsula, a statement from the Russian Strategic Missile Forces said.
President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly said Russia would continue to improve its nuclear weapons systems and respond to U.S. plans to deploy a missile defense system in Europe.

Putin must not be up to speed on the Sea Land delivery mechanism
The mobile launcher presents its own unique problem in that one could export a couple and drive them into the Canadian ( New Mexico) wilderness someplace where they are 30 seconds from some major metro area.
Even if our most excellent military detected the launch what do they do retaliate by blowing up Toronto , Albuquerque ??
US to Meatpackers: Don’t Do Mad Cow Test
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Bush administration said Tuesday it will fight to keep meatpackers from testing all their animals for mad cow disease.
The Agriculture Department tests less than 1 percent of slaughtered cows for the disease, which can be fatal to humans who eat tainted beef. But Kansas-based Creekstone Farms Premium Beef wants to test all of its cows.

As long as they can be encouraged to export all their meat to China or the south east this should be fine .
China Sentences Former Drug Regulator to Death
SHANGHAI: The former head of China’s top food and drug safety agency was sentenced to death Tuesday after pleading guilty to corruption and accepting bribes, according to the state-controlled news media.
Zheng Xiaoyu, who served as director of China’s Food & Drug Administration from its founding in 1998 until mid 2005, was detained in February as part of a government investigation into the agency that is supposed to be the nation’s food and drug watchdog.
The unusually harsh sentence for the former director comes at a time of heightened concerns about the quality and safety of China’s food and drug system after a series of scandals involving tainted food and phony drugs.
China is also under mounting pressure to overhaul its food export controls after two Chinese companies were accused this year of shipping CONTAMINATED PET FOOD (EMPHASIS ADDED) ingredients to the United States, triggering one of the largest pet food recalls in United States history.

Flags Replaced With Swastikas in Wash.
ORCAS ISLAND, Wash. (AP) – Vandals burned dozens of small American flags that decorated veterans’ graves for Memorial Day and replaced many of them with hand-drawn swastikas, authorities said Monday.
Forty-six flag standards were found empty and another 33 flags were in charred tatters Sunday in the cemetery, authorities said. Swastikas drawn on paper appeared where 14 of the flags had been.

Supreme court narrows rules for claims of unfair pay
Earlier today, the Supreme Court narrowed the rules for claims of unfair pay, according to a report in the LA Times, referring to it as “a victory for employers, shielding them from discrimination claims from the past.”
“In a setback for employees claiming job bias, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled today that they could not rely on old evidence showing that they have long been paid less than co-workers to argue that they are discriminated against now,” David G. Savage reports for the paper.
The article continues, “In a 5-4 decision, the justices said federal civil rights law requires proof of a ‘discrete act of discrimination’ in the 180 days before a suit is filed. A discrimination claim cannot rely on earlier pay decisions that shortchanged a black, female or disabled worker, the court said.”

Georgia moves primary to Feb. 5, joins national movement
Source: AP
ATLANTA (AP) – Georgia joined a handful of other states holding earlier primary elections when Governor Perdue signed a bill today that pushes the state’s presidential preference primary up by a month.
The measure moves the 2008 primary from March 4th to February 5th in hopes of creating a national primary day in most states. Arkansas, Delaware, Missouri, Oklahoma, Arizona and Utah are already planning primaries for February 5th.
Last week, Florida moved its primary to January 29th, leapfrogging several other states and putting the state behind only the Iowa and Nevada caucuses and the New Hampshire primary. It’s also the same day as the South Carolina primary.

Big score for Fox News and the CBC’s effort to legitimize Fox News with a Democratic debate.
While Barack Obama, John Edwards, Hillary Clinton, and Bill Richardson have all announced plans to skip the debate, they can console themselves with the fact that yes — Dennis Kucinich has decided to attend.
