It’s Friday, ya bastids! Not only that, it’s payday. My first payday in almost two years, even. Unfortunately, it’s supposed to be 94 here today, and that pretty much sucks. Even worse, it’s Balloon Festival weekend. Not that I have anything against balloons, mind you, but it’s at the park where we go for walkies, and it’ll be pretty much off-limits until next week. We’ll have to find someplace else to talk the poor doggie out. Not tonight, though; too damn hot. Let’s hurry up and get this day over with.
First? That’s a shock, especially since I stayed up for almost all of the game last night, way past my bedtime. Cavs lose, but hopefully they’ll come back on Sunday. I can only imagine what life is like these days in Cleveland… the fans have gone so long without a championship in ANYTHING that they must be going nuts.
Not this morning, I mean, but after the Cavs won the conference final.
And realistically, the hometown candidate probably won’t be our next president, especially since Glenn Beck doesn’t like him.

Bush taken ill with stomach bug at G8 summit
HEILIGENDAMM, Germany, June 8 (Reuters) – U.S. President George W. Bush was taken ill on the final day of a Group of Eight summit but his condition is not serious, a White House aide said on Friday.
White House counsellor Dan Bartlett said Bush had a stomach ailment which he described as “not serious”. Bush hopes to return to meetings at the summit later in the day.
He said they were “not sure if it’s something that he ate last night or this morning”.
“The president right now is resting and is going to recuperate a bit and join the leaders on the remaining agenda today as quickly as possible,” Bartlett told reporters.

Jenn and her little daughter have come to spend the weekend with us on Shelter Island. She brought her giant dog and 3 month old kitten with her. So here is the count: 1 grandchild, 3 dogs (about 240 lbs of dog altogether) 4 cats.
Sounds like the beginning of a recipe, and it is, a recipe for constant movement that feels a lot like turmoil..

PJ…an old friend of mine had this fantastic dog, Tim, who had a balloon trauma…and so everytime he saw a balloon he went wacko!
old Tim would freak at balloon weekend…
My second thought about that was that I wonder if its hot enough this weekend of they might not explode!! Like the hindenberg!
The good news may be that the horrible heatwave of today is supposed to cause some very unstable and violent thunderstorms….so maybe you and Siggy will get the park back afterall….
congrats on the paycheck…I hope its BIG!!…though I have the feeling that you are not one of the ones who is benefiting from the bush tax cuts….its the hospital CEO’s who are doing real well these days…just saw an article about that.
sue…I’d love to be by the ocean this weekend…as it is, Im at least getting my new grill delivered this afternoon!…but this one day heat thing is not good news round here. I have a viral eye thing suddenly and this is get sick weather…there is major strep going round the schools….

fred:
were you hoping the immigration bill would pass?
it’s a very complicated business and i think i’d rather wait for a new (hopefully democratic of course) prez to deal with it.
The immigration bill was either a failed smoke screen intended to make DC appear to be doing something or an indication that neither party has the slightest idea of what they are doing.
That bill was unenforceable and this border fence is a total waste of dollars .. Getting rid of NAFTA would be a good idea.. Getting rid of the elitist rule in Mexico would be a good idea , fining the employers who import illegals would be a good idea. but would they ever discuss that… of course not :gate: :omg: :jason: :fist:
Kristapea- when you get pics, where can we see them?
I know Fred…but I can imagine, cant I?…lightening, explosions, hail, big balloons going up in flames…come on!! Let gal have some fun!
The immigration bill is a joke. They cant expect that anyone would even go for it…it just wont work no matter what they do…so how could it pass?
What a folly the whole thing is.
Its not even worth being angry about it. Like maybe they are just floating the most insane plans just to see when we crack….
right on all counts. but sometimes stalemate = the best possible outcome.
yeah, we need some pics of the elf and his giant wife!
I was thinking about how hard it would be to take a picture of Dennis and his wife together .. Poor Dennis would look like a midget. 😮 😮
I’ll post the pics here KK. I hope his wife is there.
Someone needs to analyze these immigration statistics ..
A lot of these illegals came here legally and just stayed after their visas expired
The IDIOT MORONS calling C-span seem to view a flood of people walking across the Arizona desert or swimming the Rio Grande.. Many came on buses , in their own cars and on Airplanes.
Over what period of time has it taken to accumulate these 20 million… 12 million… 15 million… whatever million illegals..??
How many have been here for twenty years ?
How many are in our mercenary ,.. err. volunteer army ??
Not all of these illegals are employed at below minimum wage .. many own property.. they all pay state and local sales taxes and many pay social security they can never collect.
If you were to fine the employers what would you do about the state, local and Federal governments that are found to be employing illegals.
Would you fine some 80 year old lady who has an illegal as a house keeper. ??
What do you do about day labor..?? The workers just gather in the Job Service parking lot The contractors come in and get groups of them, pay them in cash for the days work and return them to the parking lot . ??
Trying to export them would most likely result in wide spread urban renewal.. Some state governments may even fall to them .. 😮
In other words this :crap: is a total waste of time. :reaper:
When you look at the state and local governments having illegals as employees what happens if you remove them .. will taxes have to go up in order to replace them ?? Republicans ( not to mention rethugs) would never go for that 😮 😮 a tax increase 😮 😮
Morning all!
These morons make me sick. :barf:
While they’re obsessing about floods of Mexicans, the wealthy are outsourcing middle-class jobs to Bangalore, IBM is laying off thousands while lobbying for an increase in the H-1B cap, and the wealthy are still picking their pockets.
Have I mentioned today how much I hate many of my countrymen? :jason:
Yes Fred, illegal immigrants are too interwoven into our society for any kind of simple solution. And the hate that has been drummed up for them seems overwhelming. Even after getting my mom to agree that most illegals are NOT criminals and that most of them just want to make an honest living like you and I(although my mom is pretty damned lazy and would work the system in a second) she still sends me hateful illegal immigrant propaganda. 🙄

This is from Dr. Fox, who writes a regular collumn in the Washington Post. (Sorry for the long post.)
I was reading your column regarding concerns over using chemicals to eliminate bugs and other pests. You made a comment about DDT being banned, and I think you should update your information. The accusations against DDT published by Rachel Carson have now been disproved.
This chemical is again being used in Africa and South America against mosquitoes. After the banning of DDT, the incidence of malaria began to climb in poorer countries to a major degree. Health authorities figure the upsurge at about 85 percent. After research has shown DDT not to be the source of problems as claimed by Carson, many countries are beginning to start using it again, and the number of cases of malaria has dropped precipitously. Those who fell for Carson’s unsupported diatribe now have considerable egg on their faces.

I appreciate your humanitarian desire to limit the spread of malaria. However, DDT is one of a class of pesticides that cause endocrine-system disruption as well as immune-system impairment, cancer, birth defects and infertility in humans and other animal species, wild and domestic. Carson’s “diatribe,” as you put it — her classic book “Silent Spring” (Mariner Books, 2002) — was a wake-up call to us all.
DDT and related man-made chemicals have caused more harm to humans and the environment than malaria. Malaria is a public sanitation, population and nutrition issue for which there are no chemical solutions. Plus, the malaria-carrying mosquitoes quickly develop immunity to DDT and other pesticides.
A rare lunchtime post, since we’re going out after work and I might not be able to post later.

Most Americans believe in both evolution, creationism
Asked whether human life is a result of God’s creation or evolution over millions of years, a majority of Americans said both are probable explanations, a poll suggested on Friday.
Overall, more Americans expressed a strong belief in creationism, or the theory that God created humans in their present form at a single period in time within the last 10,000 years.
A full 66 percent said they believed in creationism, with 39 percent of those polled saying it was definitely true and 27 percent believing it was probably true.
But 53 percent said they believed in evolution, the scientific theory that humans developed over millions of years from less advanced forms of life. Eighteen percent said evolution was definitely true, while 35 percent said it was probably true.
The results were released in a USA Today/Gallup poll of 1,007 adults, taken between June 1-3. The margin of error was three percent.
The polarizing issue of how life came to be has worked its way into US classrooms in recent years, where some states have enacted legislation that says teachers must include critical analysis of Charles Darwin’s evolutionary theory.
More recently, the question divided Republican presidential candidates who traditionally represent the Christian conservative elements of US society, with three answering in last month’s debate that they do not believe in evolution.

One has to wonder where the poll was taken
but
reading the comments on the RawStory web site

makes one wonder how inellegent most RawStory readers are too. 😮 😮
In listening to all these talk radio callers saying “but they violated the law send them back”. If the FHWA had implemented a plan they had in the 1980’s to put in road side sensor stations that would poll the Engine Control Units in passing cars to see how fast they were going then send a command back to the car to slow slow down if they were going to fast one has to wonder how well that would have gone over. :reaper: :reaper:
There is still a concerted efort on the part of law enforcement to have such stations and to have a command issued by the police that would shut down all the engines in all cars and trucks in the range of the sensor stations. This would supposedly stop high speed pursuits. :reaper: :reaper:
Evolution by itself violates the second law of thermodynamics that implies that systems left to to their own recourse will result in maximum randomness, This implies that evolution would lead to lots of lead not life.. Does this imply that most Physical Chemists must therefore believe in creationism. ?? :fustrate: :fustrate: :paranoid: :paranoid:
In reading lots of Liberal blogs one has to come to the conclusion that most bloggers are atheists or are afraid to come out one or the other. If 70% of Amerikans are supposedly Christians this may say something either about polling or bloggers or both … I’m obliviously confused. :reaper:
