OK, so here’s my story. I ordered a couple of things (a USB CD/DVD drive enclosure for a laptop drive, and a new graphics tablet) about two weeks ago, which were shipped on 6/19 via FedEx. On 6/21, online tracking indicated that they had been delivered, by leaving them on the front porch, which is typical (even though somebody was home at the time). I got home, only to find no package. I immediately called FedEx, only to find out that the package had been left on the porch of an address somewhat similar to mine – except on the other side of town. I was told that the driver would be going out to get it the next day. I heard nothing the next day, and called FedEx again. No information, no change in the tracking (still showed delivered). I e-mailed them again on Tuesday, and was advised that I should file a loss claim, which I did. On Wednesday, the local FedEx called to tell me that they’d “try” to recover the package the next day. I heard nothing from them, and today, I got an e-mail stating that my claim had been decided, and they’d be sending me a letter in a week or so to tell me what it was they decided. So, I e-mailed them and asking what the hell they decided. Turns out, they denied my claim, with no reason as to why. So, I called them, and was told “sorry, the person handling your claim is gone, call her Monday.”
I am unable to properly express my frustration and anger at this. These fuckers knew immediately that they’d delivered it to the wrong address, and they have totally blown me off through the whole process, never communicated with me unless I initiated it, and I still don’t have the goddamn stuff I ordered. And now it looks as if they want to screw me out of the money entirely. I’m pissed. It’s not that they delivered it to the wrong address, so much (shit happens), but that they have totally blown me off.
I, personally, will never do business with a company that ships via FedEx ever, ever, again. And I sure as hell won’t be shipping anything with them again.
OK, I’m done. Gonna go see Sicko today, even though we already had a little “sneak preview” of it last week. I think everybody ought to get out there and see it. The fucking insurance companies must have given FedEx a lesson on how to screw people over.

Fedex likes to leave stuff under the stoop, with a note glued to the door that says, “package under the steps.” This is very helpful to some of my fellow Brooklynites who enjoy relieving me of these burdensome packages.
The post office has a different plan: drive by the house then return the package to the post office. Do not leave any notice, people should know when they are getting a package.
UPS is the best, at least our UPS guy, Keith , is. He leaves things with neibors and lets us know with whom he left it. He never leaves stuff on or under the stairs.
Good Morning :joe: That sux PJ. I thought of the insurance companies from Sicko as I was reading your story. It would be awesome if everyone in the insurance industry saw Sicko and then all quit their jobs. Just my little fantasy.
The regular FedEx guy we have is fine. He’ll leave stuff on the porch if he can kind of hide it (we have a trellis with grape vines all over it on one side, the garage on the other, and a bench that has hidey spots in and around it. If he can’t hide it, then he’ll return it and leave a notice. Of course, he leaves it on our porch, which really seems to make a big difference. Somehow, leaving it on somebody else’s porch five miles away seems to be a problem for some reason. Go figure. And then they don’t communicate, act like they’re hiding something, and then deny my claim, when they’ve known all along that they delivered it to the wrong place. Bastids.
That’s pretty lame. I feel like most of the large corps you deal with anymore are antagonistic like that. Whatever happened to, “the customer is always right” ?? It seems like you have to fight the system so much anymore, I find it very tiresome. That was one of the things in Sicko that so impressed me was to see people having an easy time with the system.
What a psychological relief it would be to know that you’ll be taken care of. No wonder my mother threatens to become a bag lady all the time. She has a good chance of becoming one here.
Thanks for the Rollins link.

Yeah, probably. But then you can always just click on the sedition radio link and listen to it in winamp. I could probably try to come up with an iframe or something, but then it probably wouldn’t work on a mac, or it would only work in firefox, or whatever. If I listen to it here, I get it going in one tab, and then open up the comments in a new tab, and use that for reading and posting. That’s why I didn’t set it to play automatically. I mostly put it there because I was playing around with embedding it in the sedition radio myspace page, but it turns out myspace is (surprise, surprise) not that easy to embed mp3 streams into. At least, I didn’t quite figure it out. Not a lot of time to play these days. Too busy calling and e-mailing FedEx (on the bright side, at least I feel like I’m getting screwed several times a day).

We do not know why Sahar went that last time to Mosul. But we do know why she was killed. A democrat, a journalist and a woman — it’s a lethal combination in Iraq.
Sahar Hussein Ali al-Haydari, 44, was fearless in writing about attempts by extremists to establish an Iraqi Islamic emirate based around her home town of Mosul. She was harsh on efforts to foment sectarian conflict: The last article we received was a Romeo and Juliet tale of a girl stoned to death for converting from Yezidism (a Kurdish sect) to Islam because she fell in love with a Muslim boy. She wrote, too, about restrictions placed on women by religiously driven insurgents.
“Murder has long become a daily companion for the inhabitants of this northern city,” she noted last fall after several female teachers at Mosul schools were assassinated.

I got to meet JB at JazzFest a few years ago. He probably though I was a stalker. I usually plant myself at his feet whenever possible and goofily stare at his guitar. Really nice guy. Usually if he sees you checking him out he’ll position so you can get a better look. I remember seeing him do that for Garcia once.
I was in the dressing room trailer with a few dozen folks minding my own business (in awe) and he actually walked over to me and asked me who I was and spent the next hour hanging out with me. I even had a chance to try to smooth over his rift with Fender a little.
I probably saw him 50 times with EmmyLou and then with Jerry Lee and the new Elvis. Someday I hope to visit him in Schreveport.
I would have hired him so I could yell “James Burton and his pink paisley guitar!”

Fred, there are a number of community radio stations out here. A number of Pacifica stations for starters. Another one is KVMR in Nevada City. Lots of 60s types wandered off to those places out here and some of them have made some good money :bong: . Nova M only has Malloy on the Quake around here. I think Phoenix is the only Nova M station at this point. They won’t make it as a network imho. The deregulation of the airwaves has made it a lot more difficult to get things like that or community radio stations going. The religious broadcasters have also cut into availability as well. As Fat Headdie sez, it’s all about the ownership.

I saw Sicko this morning. Some random thoughts:
1) I’m moving to France. ๐
2) PJ, you should definitely talk Michael Moore into investigating FedEx for his next movie.
3) Not as many dark-humor moments as Fahrenheit 911, but the ones that were there were good. A lot of people laughed at the Bush comments, but I’ve heard them so many times that I don’t find them funny anymore. It’s sad that having three jobs is “uniquely American.” But I’m glad the other people in the theater had a chuckle.
4) Once again, Moore demonstrates his unique ability to make you laugh, piss you off and fire you up. Sometimes in the same minute. And I defy anyone to sit dry-eyed through the scene when the 9/11 workers meet the Cuban firefighters.
It sounds as though Kucinich is going to be tying his campaign into the uproar that the film will hopefully generate, which is smart. He’s back in town today, but I didn’t go because he was just here last month and anyway it’s too damn hot. I’ve already taken two showers today and would like to avoid #3 if possible.
Hope everyone caught Dennis on Letterman last night. It seemed as if he may have struck a chord with at least part of the audience. And it was taped prior to his strong performance in Thursday’s debate, too.
So far I haven’t contributed to any presidential candidates, despite the hundreds of e-mails I’m sure everyone else is receiving too since it’s the end of the quarter. Right now I’m leaning toward Kucinich (major shock, I know), but Edwards and Richardson have impressed me too, and I haven’t ruled Obama out yet.
On to the new quarter, I guess. I can’t believe July starts tomorrow. Until I go outside, that is. :hot: :hot: :hot:

I just finished downloading the “debate” from the other night and don’t have time to watch but I listened to most of it yesterday including some Luntz focus group post mortem. I actually like Frank Luntz occasionally. It wasn’t as bad as people feared.
I am looking at this thing now and it really looks to me like Hillary might run away with it. I am of 200 minds about this. You have to admit that, issues aside, she is ‘projecting’ best of all of the current candidates. She seems to get flack from all sides but she just keeps on getting it done. The thing about her is she has been shot at for so long that she is great dealing.
None of them bother me too much. I repeat that my preference would be to re-elect Gore running with Edwards or Obama. In 4 or 8 years, the VP would be ready to move on up. Of course if Hillary nails it down, that will not happen. I would think Wesley Clark might end up as her running mate.
I don’t think Obama is catching on for now and if he doesn’t catch a little mo, he is going nowhere. I hate seeing Edwards slipping and hate to think it is the haircut thing. I sense a little desperation here. I think Richardson is really good but it ain’t going to happen. He will be a good running mate or Secretary of State. I used to like Biden until bankruptcy so screw him but could see him in the Secretary of State role as well. Dodd and Gravel (much as I like them at times) should just go away.
Kucinich should stay around to keep the debate open to the left but he’s not going anywhere and will top out as a congressman. I hope he becomes the vocal stalking horse for single payer and a non-profit health system. I’m not buying anyone’s plan that keeps the HMOs and Pharma heavily in the mix.
OK, back to fixing lunch and off to the Giants game. Some intersting interviews on Costas On the Radio today with Max Weinberg and John Cougar.
Well said, Vernon. But, I’m not ready to let her walk away with it yet. She has to earn it. She needs to get very strong if she is going to do this.
I watched her win he senate race in NY, the first time. It was an impressive performance. She won support all around the state. Of course it didn’t hurt that Lazio, her opponent, asked her if she wanted to appologize for lying when she said Clinton was not having an affair.
Just saying issues aside she’s got amazing chops and on that level is blowing the rest away.
Just a thematic wrap-up video for today with some Burton, Elvis, Garcia, Marin County with clothes but clothed Annie was hot, a great record store party, and me somewhere out there.

Hey, haven’t seen a hundred in a while.
Some days things just go wrong. Must be Mercury retrograde. We headed into NYC tonight to see Belà Fleck at Carnegie Hall, but there were huge delays getting to the GWB and River Road down to the ferry was no better. So we went to go see Sicko instead at the theatre in Edgewater, but the show had already started and was sold out.
What’s all this talk of interview with Marc? Where? :yippee: I was driving back from the DC area yesterday and listening to the last show Marc did the week before Thom Hartmann took over Franken’s show. That was a great show, with Brendan, Dan, and K-Lo — and Jim calling in. Good Holy Christ, I miss Maron on radio. ๐
Vernon, I think you’re right — Hillary is going to run away with this. Not because the People want her, but because the Powers that Be want her. Perhaps because they want to lose. Democrats seem to enjoy being the whiny minority. Frankly, I feel pretty doomed. If you took at a look at B@B today you saw the video of the law firm that teaches companies how to rig their hiring so they don’t have to hire American workers and can hire H-1Bs instead — and it’s all legal. I don’t know how many of you guys watched the debate the other night, but only Gravel, Kucinich, and Edwards had anything to say other than “more education.” How the fuck is education going to help when the government helps companies refuse to hire American tech workers? :fustrate:
Bela Fleck was up here last night at Jazzfest. Would’ve liked to go (it]s free, even), but it was at 9:30, and that’s past my bedtime. Tomorrow night, Aretha Franklin is closing the fest.

A military judge has refused a Pentagon request to reconsider his dismissal of charges against a Guantanamo Bay detainee accused of killing an American soldier in Afghanistan.
The judge, Army Col. Peter Brownback, ruled Friday that the government’s renewed legal argument has not resolved a lack of jurisdiction in the case of Omar Khadr, a Canadian who was 15 when he was arrested on an Afghan battlefield in 2002.
Khadr is one of two detainees whose military trials fell apart because they were not identified as “unlawful” enemy combatants.
A Pentagon spokesman, Navy Cmdr. Jeffrey Gordon, said Saturday that the military is preparing to file a challenge to the Court of Military Commissions Review, a Washington-based appeals court that was set up within a week of the dismissal of the two detainees’ charges on June 4.

there’s apparently no limit to these thugs naked power grabs.
i wonder how military judges view the fact that as soon as the pentagon gets a ruling it doesn’t like, they set up a kangaroo court to enforce their will.
i wonder if this “judicial commission” can “retire” judges they don’t agree with?
chilling effect anyone?

Beautiful banjo piece. Molly Tuttle is the daughter of Jack Tuttle, A bluegrass teacher. She was around 13 when she recorded this. She is very adept at the guitar, but plays many other instruments. this banjo tune really tugged at my heart strings.

Cajun music, dinner and conversation!

Jim, believe it or not, I do. I spent a number of hours on early Thanksgiving morning a few years ago with a friend who is a fairly accomplished flatpicker of some renown while he tried to get Shuffler’s greatness. He never quite got it. One of the best nights of my life.
EDIT- He was Cajun as well. I have done a lot of Cajun time. More to come this week, Savoy-Doucet Band at the Marin County (clothing not optional) Fair July 4.
been some good posts tonight, thanks!
love ya all!
