KInd of a tough weekend over there in eye-rack. Last I looked, the death toll was up to 223 (but, hey, happy festival of Ashura anyway). I’m sure this all worth it somehow, though I’m not sure why or in what way. Let’s hear it for Colin Powell, though, who tried has darn-diddily best to talk dubya out of his little war. Why, he spent a whole two and a half hours (that’s like an entire Bush work day)…
…vainly trying to persuade President George W Bush not to invade Iraq and believes today’s conflict cannot be resolved by US forces.
“I tried to avoid this war,†Powell said at the Aspen Ideas Festival in Colorado. “I took him through the consequences of going into an Arab country and becoming the occupiers.â€
Aw, poor Colin (at least the “festival of ideas” seems to have been a bit less deadly that the festival of Ashura). All that hard work. And then he so bravely followed through with his dog and pony show in front of the UN. He’s just like all of these other spineless Republicans. Lots of talk, but when it comes time to do the right thing, they fall back in line and goose step along with the rest of the pack.
Spare us the bullshit crocodile tears, Colin. You had a chance to stand up, be a man, and do the right thing. You didn’t. Now shut the fuck up and go away.

The Aspen Ideas Festival? Who had the “idea” to invite Colin Powell?
Here’s an idea. Let’s not listen to this hypocrite any more. Or at least make him put on a red nose and big floppy shoes, and come out of the little car with 15 or 16 other generals.

Is it me or has the news at the top of the hour on AAR been exactly the same pre-recorded broadcast for the last 3 or 4 days?
Good Morning :joe: You’re most likely noticing the fact that AAR got rid of it’s news dept.
Hey Krista, I know but whatever they’ve replaced it with is playing the exact same broadcast over this past weekend I think.
Nixon on Fred Thompson: “He’s Dumb as Hellâ€
Pres. Nixon didn’t want Fred Thompson as minority counsel during the Watergate hearings because he doubted the mental capacity of the future actor and lobbyist.

Barlow wrote an analysis for then-Secretary Dick Cheney that concluded the planned F-16 sale violated this law. Drawing on detailed, classified studies, Barlow wrote about Pakistan’s ability, intentions and activities to deliver nuclear bombs using F-16s it had acquired before the law was passed.
Barlow discovered later that someone rewrote his analysis so that it endorsed the sale of the F-16s. Arthur Hughes, the deputy assistant secretary of defense, testified to Congress that using the F-16s to deliver nuclear weapons “far exceeded the state of art in Pakistan” — something Barlow knew to be untrue.
…
Brian and Gallucci believe that had Barlow’s alarms been heeded in 1989, Khan might have been deterred from building the world’s largest atomic black market — a network that has since supplied nuclear weapons technology to Libya, Iran and North Korea.
Prominent Shi’ite and Sunni politicians called on Iraqi civilians to take up arms to defend themselves after a weekend of violence that claimed more than 220 lives, including 60 who died yesterday in a surge of bombings and shootings around Baghdad.
The proposals to arm civilians reflected growing frustration over the inability of Iraqi forces to prevent attacks, while the string of bombings in the Iraqi capital showed that extremists can still unleash powerful strikes there despite the US security crackdown

I just heard that Steve Rappaport of the Ran-Dells passed on July 4 on Maui. One of the reasons I would listen to Dick Biondi was to hear their one novelty hit, Martian Hop.

Ted Stevens, the longest-serving Republican senator and once the chief power broker for dispensing federal dollars, says he’s worried that a corruption investigation “could cause me some trouble” in running for re-election next year.
The 83-year-old Alaska Republican has drawn Justice Department scrutiny over a renovation project in 2000 that more than doubled the size of his home in a resort town surrounded by glaciers.
The remodeling was overseen by Bill Allen, a contractor who has pleaded guilty to bribing Alaska state legislators. Allen is founder of VECO Corp., an Alaska-based oil field services and engineering company that has reaped tens of millions of dollars in federal contracts.
Allen is cooperating with the FBI, and investigators appear to be looking at whether VECO got anything in return for the home improvement help

The White House has declared it has secrets it wants to hide from the American people by invoking Executive Privilege. The only people who have that much to hide in that many areas are criminals.
Take a good look at who has gotten rich in this country in the last 25 years. It surly hasn’t been the average American. And look real good at who is getting rich from the continued travesty in the middle east. The elite with Republican friends in high places have been looting this country since Reagan began gutting the laws meant to protect Americans and American society.
Who needs an enemy like Al Qaeda when we have the Republican party in our midst? They have sold our entire society down a poluted river for a thirty pieces of silver.
Democratic Senate challenger Al Franken raised $1.9 million in the second quarter, outpacing all of his rivals. Sen. Norm Coleman (R-Minn.) raised $1.6 million for the quarter, while his Democratic primary opponent Mike Ciresi banked $750,000.
Most of the money Franken raised came from individual contributors – less than one percent of the money raised came from PACs

Michael Moore kicks the shit out of Wolf Blitzer. Must see TV.
Interesting Fresh Air today on health care. I know, NPR :omg: .
Interviews: Diagnosing U.S. Health Care — and ‘Sicko,’ Too
Jonathan Oberlander, a political scientist with an expertise in health-care politics and policy, discusses problems with the U.S. health-care system and considers how other countries handle health care. He’ll also give us a critique of Michael Moore’s documentary Sicko. Oberlander is an associate professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Terry Gross has some good shit sometimes. She’s a bit of a twit (or has some very twitish tendencies, at the very least), but has some good interviews. Plus she went to one of my many alma maters (UB).
I did not agree with everything that was on the show but it was informative and far better than listening to Hartmann trying to impress with his “debating” skills against someone from the ACRU in which I heard Thom lie or distort several times. I hate it when they do it. Totally unacceptable that he does it or anyone else from the prog side. The truth is on our side.
Oh, yeah, Moore on Wolf was excellent.
I think Hartmann’s problem is that he thinks he’s as smart as he pretends to be.
Anybody who doesn’t think health care in the US is fucked up should talk to my wife, who is still not home from work. Every day she goes in for her “part time” job, she’s there for a minimum of twelve hours (she was back in for four hours on Saturday, when she was “off”). And they’ve decided they won’t pay for extra hours worked, so she can fuck over the patients and leave on time (and put her license at risk), or she can work for free.
Exactly. Most dangerous.
Oooooh, PJ, that Michael Moore bit is truly Must-See. Beautiful smack-dowb of Blitzer. :spank:
A lot of the players’ kids are shagging at the Home Run Derby at the All-Star Game? I think I need to head downtown.

There is more evidence to back up a long-standing theory that smokers are less likely to develop Parkinson’s disease than people who do not use tobacco products, researchers reported on Monday.
The apparent protective effect of tobacco against the degenerative nerve disease has been observed for years but a University of California Los Angeles School of Public Health report said a new review of existing studies seems to confirm it, with long-term and current smokers at the lowest risk.

Oooh, flank my sides, thanks for that Captain Beefheart video. Was that Morris Tepper hoppin’ around in the white shirt?? I think it was, it said Jeff Tepper in the credits but I think he is using his middle name now. He is so awesome, he always remembers my name when he comes to town. He’s amazing.
