Today, I await the delivery of my Big Kahuna, 65,000 BTU propane burner. That should cut my brewing time down considerably (plus I can hang out and brew in the back yard). Fortunately, it’s coming via UPS and not FedEx, so I anticipate that it’ll actually be delivered to the correct address. Now I just have to get this day over with.

Granny!! I hope everyone watched the PBS special on Les Paul last night.
DOH!!! :smack:
Didn’t even know Les Paul was on 🙁 . PJ & I both spent our Anniversary at our respective notsogainful places of employment and I didn’t get out of the trenches at Hospital Land :slap: until after quitting time, as usual.
The place just sucks the life outta ya :reaper: It is just SICKO SICKO SICKO. The highlight of the day was a staff meeting where the boss made us watch the “Incident Command” video which is about the disaster management plan. The acting by hospital employees was stellar (not) :rofl2: and they got to wear snazzy red vests and walk around with clipboards looking important. When it was over, I asked if someone got the idea for this from the Dept of Homeland Security because it was such a seedy production. Got a big laugh. It’s nice to work with people who pretty much “get” it.
Oh, well. Lots to do on my one day off. :knit: :boobs:

Is it reasonable to expect an online store to be able to ship a gift to an address that is not the address of the credit card used to purchase it?? I mean, why else would you buy a gift for someone in another state if it had to be shipped to you first and then you have to ship it to them???
I understand the security issue in that but COME ON, I can’t imagine there not being a solution to that problem. 🙄
Wow, this online store I tried to buy a gift for my mom is really really antagonistic towards their customers. Great Tunes direct. I don’t have time now but I will rant later. :rant1:

Hi, Dru — I am contracted to work “part” time, but that’s kind of a joke because they expect you to cram 20 hours of work into 8 and the environment is SICKO SICKO SICKO :slap: . So it is extremely difficult to get out on time. The new edict which has come down from Administration (which I vote to IMPEACH) is that no OT (which I don’t get anyway) or extra hours will be paid unless two positions are cut. I think the Bean Counters in charge of the budget must be Republicans. If we didn’t have to waste so much freaking time and paper begging insurance companies for authorization for services and dealing with people who have no money to pay for shit, the budget wouldn’t be in the red, fergodsake.
I have a Granny meeting this afternoon & we need to plan some Rages around health care issues — Rochester Raging Grannies came up with a great healthcare song:
This Old Gray Granny
(Tune: “The Old Gray Mareâ€)
Lyrics by Vicki Ryder
This OLD gray Granny ain’t what she used to be,
HAD a hysterectomy,
NEEDS a colonoscopy,
But SHE can’t afford to PAY for her care and so
I GUESS we’ll have to shoot her now.
’Cause WHERE is she supposed to go
WHEN she doesn’t have the dough?
She DOESN’T dare get sick withOUT health insurance so
I GUESS we’ll have to shoot her now.
This OLD gray Granny SPLITS all her pills in half.
The DRUG companies just laugh;
Their PROFITS are off the graph.
But GRANNY can’t afford to PAY for her pills and so
I GUESS we’ll have to shoot her now.
’Cause WHAT is she supposed to do
When MONEY for the rent is due?
She CAN’T buy pills and GROCERIES, too, and so
I GUESS we’ll have to shoot her now.
This OLD gray Granny NOW needs a test or two.
Her BOOB has a lump, it’s true,
But WHAT is she supposed to do?
She CAN’T pay the bill so she’ll JUST have to muddle through.
I GUESS we’ll have to shoot her now.
Well, GRANNY’s old but she is wise.
She KNOWS we have to organize,
For HOUSE Resolution H-R-6-7-6,
For SINGLE payer Medicare for all!
Just GIVE your Representatives a call,
And TELL ’em we need health care, one and all!
Let’s GET out and work for H-R-6-7-6,
So WE won’t have to shoot her after all!
:dancers: :boobs: :dancers: :boobs: :dancers:
The phrasing is a little tricky, but we’ll figure it out.
You’ve got some FANTASTIC Grannies out your way — you ought to consider joining up with a gaggle near you — I think you’d be GREAT as a Granny! BTW, being able to sing is NOT important. :nixon:

I really think a good march in Washington to demand a single payer system is what is needed, but even more needed is a group to organize such a march.
I hear a lot of people wondering why we haven’t taken to the streets against the war as we did in the 60’s. But we didn’t spontaneously start marching, there was a lot of organizing going on. Perhaps the ability to connect with other lefties on the internets has taken the place of actions.

Oil tanker grounded off New York City
NEW YORK (Reuters) – A tanker carrying more than 19 million gallons of fuel oil grounded off New York City on Thursday but was not leaking, the U.S. Coast Guard said.
The White Sea ran aground off New Jersey’s Sandy Hook at approximately 6:30 a.m. EDT after losing steerage, said U.S. Coast Guard spokesman Bob Laura.
“It is a double-hulled vessel and the crew deployed some spill booms after it went aground,” said Laura.
Tugs will attempt to free the vessel later on Thursday morning but some of the cargo may have to be removed before the ship can be refloated, he added.

Kucinich Iran stance outrages Ohio Jewish leaders
Source: Plain Dealer
Thursday, July 12, 2007
Stephen Koff
Plain Dealer Washington Bureau Chief
Dennis Kucinich, the colorful Cleveland congressman and longshot presidential candidate, has outraged Jewish leaders in Northeast Ohio by insisting that Iran’s anti-Zionist leader is not seeking to exterminate Israel.
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is regarded by many in the western world as a menace with nuclear ambitions, who recently called for supporters of Israel to, among other things, “burn in the fire of the Islamic nations’ fury.” Kucinich, however, says another translation of that and other statements is that Ahmadinejad merely wants regime change in Israel, not death to its people and supporters.
Jewish leaders say such a translation might be acceptable only if Kucinich ignored Ahmadinejad’s behavior, which includes torture of his own people, and Middle East history since Israel’s founding in 1948.
Kucinich’s position puts him in a slim minority in Congress – two, if you count Kucinich…

‘A dead Iraqi is just another dead Iraqi… You know, so what?’
Source: Independent (UK)
That perception will take a severe knock today with the publication in The Nation magazine of a series of in-depth interviews with 50 combat veterans of the Iraq war from across the US. In the interviews, veterans have described acts of violence in which US forces have abused or killed Iraqi men, women and children with impunity.
The report steers clear of widely reported atrocities, such as the massacre in Haditha in 2005, but instead unearths a pattern of human rights abuses. “It’s not individual atrocity,” Specialist Garett Reppenhagen, a sniper from the 263rd Armour Battalion, said. “It’s the fact that the entire war is an atrocity.”
Journalists and human rights groups have published numerous reports drawing attention to the killing of Iraqi civilians by US forces. The Nation’s investigation presents for the first time named military witnesses who back those assertions. Some participated themselves.
Through a combination of gung-ho recklessness and criminal behaviour born of panic, a narrative emerges of an army that frequently commits acts of cold-blooded violence. A number of interviewees revealed that the military will attempt to frame innocent bystanders as insurgents, often after panicked American troops have fired into groups of unarmed Iraqis. The veterans said the troops involved would round up any survivors and accuse them of being in the resistance while planting Kalashnikov AK47 rifles beside corpses to make it appear that they had died in combat.

re #42!
excellent article!
brings back MANY memories.
Owsley was a pioneer in public positive behaviour.
I really think that single-payer is the best way. Geting rid of the insurance campanies will save money and probably lives. I think the emphasis has to switch to prevention rather than illness.
We need to look carefully at other systems to see what works best. Perhaps there is a need for some supplimental insurance.
NPR once ran a call-in asking people for ideas for healthcare. One guy suggested that single payer cover routine healthare and insurance catastrophic care. However, having seen Sicko, and having had my own kafkaesque experiences with HMO’s, I think that insurance companies are a very bad idea . Once profit is added to the mix, costs go up and care is denied.
Of course the other part of this is drugs. Americans pay for “research and development” and that is supposedly the reason our drug prices are so high. Drugs are much cheaper in other countries.
Most of all I think we have to stop valuing money above people. A “culture of life” that extends beyond the womb!

Who me? No, I don’t think so. You never can tell, though. These days, they keep their yaps shut a lot more than they did a couple of years ago.
If the Government paid for most basic research ( which they do already indirectly through DOD contracting) then it would take away the “we need huge profits to finance R&D” argument from a lot of the capitalist industries and would make the inventions public property which could have their production rights licensed back to the corporations. This would take away corporate patent rights to the technology and make the product a lot cheaper right away and hopefully ensure it is tested. A lot of European governments do this to some
degree or another.
The Libertarians and rethugs would have a conniption fit if one did this .. but.. yet another reason to fill up those emergency rooms :tommygun: :tommygun:

Nobel laureate calls for removal of Bush
Source: Dallas Morning News
Nobel Peace Prize winner Betty Williams came from Ireland to Texas to declare that President Bush should be impeached.
In a keynote speech at the International Women’s Peace Conference on Wednesday night, Ms. Williams told a crowd of about 1,000 that the Bush administration has been treacherous and wrong and acted unconstitutionally.
“Right now, I could kill George Bush,” she said at the Adam’s Mark Hotel and Conference Center in Dallas. “No, I don’t mean that. How could you nonviolently kill somebody? I would love to be able to do that.”
About half the crowd gave her a standing ovation after she called for Mr. Bush’s removal from power.

Bush admits administration leaked CIA name
President hopes to move past furor over Libby sentence commutation
WASHINGTON – President Bush on Thursday acknowledged publicly for the first time that someone in his administration likely leaked the name of a CIA operative, although he also said he hopes the controversy over his decision to spare prison for a former White House aide has “run its course.”
“And now we’re going to move on,” Bush said in a White House news conference.
The president had initially said he would fire anyone in his administration found to have publicly disclosed the identity of Valerie Plame, the wife of former Ambassador Joseph Wilson and a CIA operative. Ten days ago, Bush commuted the 30-month sentence given to I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby by a federal judge in connection with the case.
>
“I’m aware of the fact that perhaps somebody in the administration did disclose the name of that person,” Bush said. “I’ve often thought about what would have happened if that person had come forth and said, ‘I did it.’ Would we have had this endless hours of investigation and a lot of money being spent on this matter? But, so, it’s been a tough issue for a lot of people in the White House. It’s run its course and now we’re going to move on.”
He also defended the decision to commute Libby’s sentence. “The Scooter Libby decision was, I thought, a fair and balanced decision,” Bush said.

Hey, it gets the count up.
Somewhere today, though I can’t remember where, I saw a headline:
Should we pay for the war or for healthcare?
Seems like this is THE question.
House Democrats on Thursday took the first step toward holding former White House counsel Harriet Miers in contempt of Congress after she defied a subpoena _ at President Bush’s order _ and skipped a hearing on the firing of U.S. attorneys.
Over the strenuous objections of Republicans, a subcommittee cleared the way for contempt proceedings by voting 7-5 to reject Bush’s claim of executive privilege. He says his top advisers, whether current or former, cannot be summoned by Congress.
