Damn, for some reason, I thought yesterday was Thursday, right up until I made a trip to the local homebrew store that was supposed to be open until 8:00. Unfortunately, on Wednesdays, they’re closed. What a disappointment, especially since I know I won’t feel like going there tomorrow, with the temperatures supposed to be up around 90 again. Oh well, off to the salt mines.

The Dishonor in a Tortured New ‘Interpretation’ of the Geneva Conventions
By P.X. Kelley and Robert F. Turner
Thursday, July 26, 2007; Page A21
One of us was appointed commandant of the Marine Corps by President Ronald Reagan; the other served as a lawyer in the Reagan White House and has vigorously defended the constitutionality of warrantless National Security Agency wiretaps, presidential signing statements and many other controversial aspects of the war on terrorism. But we cannot in good conscience defend a decision that we believe has compromised our national honor and that may well promote the commission of war crimes by Americans and place at risk the welfare of captured American military forces for generations to come.
The Supreme Court held in Hamdan v. Rumsfeld last summer that all detainees captured in the war on terrorism are protected by Common Article 3 of the 1949 Geneva Conventions, which prescribes minimum standards of treatment for all persons who are no longer taking an active part in an armed conflict not of an international character. It provides that “in all circumstances” detainees are to be “treated humanely.”
This is not just about avoiding “torture.” The article expressly prohibits “at any time and in any place whatsoever” any acts of “violence to life and person” or “outrages upon personal dignity, in particular, humiliating and degrading treatment.”
Last Friday, the White House issued an executive order attempting to “interpret” Common Article 3 with respect to a controversial CIA interrogation program. The order declares that the CIA program “fully complies with the obligations of the United States under Common Article 3,” provided that its interrogation techniques do not violate existing federal statutes (prohibiting such things as torture, mutilation or maiming) and do not constitute “willful and outrageous acts of personal abuse done for the purpose of humiliating or degrading the individual in a manner so serious that any reasonable person, considering the circumstances, would deem the acts to be beyond the bounds of human decency.”
In other words, as long as the intent of the abuse is to gather intelligence or to prevent future attacks, and the abuse is not “done for the purpose of humiliating or degrading the individual” — even if that is an inevitable consequence — the president has given the CIA carte blanche to engage in “willful and outrageous acts of personal abuse.”

Subpoenas for Karl Rove, Scott Jennings
Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., announced today that his committee will subpoena White House deputy chief of staff Karl Rove and White House deputy director of political affairs Scott Jennings.
According to CNN’s Political Ticker, Leahy said:
“We’ve now reached a point where the accumulated evidence shows that political considerations factored into the unprecedented firing of at least nine U.S. attorneys last year. Testimony and documents showed that the list was compiled based on input from the highest political ranks in the White House, including Mr. Rove and Mr. (Scott) Jennings, and today I will subpoena Mr. Rove and Mr. Jennings.”
The problem the house is going to have is that their Sargent at arms is going to need to be there Sargent with arms as in their own Vigilance committee.to fight off both the SS and the FBI.to do anything to these people otherwise its just a bunch of noise.. on the other hand all they have done since they were elected amounts to just a bunch of noise .. so .. :reaper: :reaper:

The Virginia governor to mobilize his national guard ?? The 182nd airborn division to defect .??
Heartman said today that Americans were afraid of their government and that was why they were not in the streets .. I think its more of an issue of the people not understanding the extent to which they need to go to change the direction. Most thirty somethings see news footage of a bunch of people in the streets in the 1970s and having been their and done that with no apparent effect are saying now what .???. all they get from their want to be leaders is a bunch of BS. :gate: :omg: :jason: :jason: :fist:
Americans seem to think that lawyers are the only way to correct a wrong. If they find out that they might have to get dirty to achieve the desired goal they will most likely go back under their bed and suck their thumb. :omg: :yuck: :fustrate: :paranoid: :crap: :crap:

God, I hate having to deal with Unix. Especially over an SSH terminal connection. Vi is not exactly an easy way to edit scripts (not when they’e very long and full of gobbeldy-gook session information that I can’t just copy and paste from my local machine).
I have had a lot of conversations lately with people who are supposedly well informed and most don’t know they lost any rights and think the presidork does not have the power to declare himself dictator and chief .. I don’t know what they use to be informed. :crap: :fustrate: :paranoid:

So, this is something you should probably avoid doing. Happened a mile or so from my house. There was about 15 feet of guardrail sticking out of the back of the car (came up from below, and went right through the car – and the driver, as you can tell from where the thing is sticking out of the trunk). Good not to be the paramedics on that call.
Was somebody talking about Oscar the cat?
We usually use a Virtual Network Connection viewer (VNC) program to connect our Linux/Sun boxes to a PC.. It allows you to cut and paste and transfer text files back and forth so you can use the windows editors on the PC. Most of the Linux/Sun boxes also have the Samba server on them so you can connect to the top level directory as a network drive and access the files as if they were on a Windows file system ..

Unfortunately, I have to use terminal emulation. And I’m trying to edit a script that goes to a third-party website, logs in, accepts cookies and session information, generates a report with specific date and view information (all handled via session variables), then downloads the report, pushes an html version out to about 30 Blackberrys, and ftps a different html version to our intranet portal. They’ve changed something in the parameters, and all I get is a blank response from the server for the html report. Really difficult to edit in vi. I can copy and paste using Putty, but it won’t copy into the vi editor. Plus, I don’t really know WTF is wrong with it, and I didn’t write this crap in the first place. Plus, nothing seems to be located in the default directories of this thing. Oy.

How about connecting to the UNIX box with a PC running Windows terminal… turn on capture and CAT the file then you can look at/edit the captured version. If the remote system has Kermit on it you can ten use it to transfer the file back to the UNIX box
Or
Run Windows terminal in Telnet mode
OR
.. use FTP ??
OR
Does the UNIX system have EMACS on it ??

If Al was on Stephanie (so to speak), it would have been either last Thursday or the 2nd week in June when I was moving. At work, I’m pretty religious about listening to her show, to the point where I schedule stuff before and after it when I can.
(And you guys thought I wasn’t religious!)
Hartmann said something earlier this week about trying to book Al, but nothing definite has been announced. Although he did have Christy Harvey on today, which was a nice blast from the recent past.
