Oh boy, another Monday. And a special one at that, as everybody’s favorite Governor Ahnuld Schwarzenegger hits the big six-oh today. It also happens to be the day on which Jimmy Hoffa went away, never to be seen again, in 1975. Perhaps more significantly, however, was what happened a year earlier. The House of Representatives recommended three articles of impeachment against Richard Nixon, ushering in the beginning of the end of Nixon’s presidency. He officially resigned just ten days later, on August 9th, ending one of the darker eras in our history.
Unfortunately, Nixon’s reign looks pretty tame in comparison with the current group of liars, murderers, and thieves. I followed the Watergate hearings pretty closely back then, and would like nothing better than to have a new set of hearings in the House and Senate to occupy my days. Of course, those were different times, back then. The WaPost wasn’t a fascist propaganda outlet, for one thing (and David Broder wasn’t yet a senile, Republican water-carrier). And there was still at least some semblance of decency amongst the politicians of the day. Or so it seemed to me, anyway (I admit, I was still a bit young and naive). It’s sad that the closest thing we have to a Lowell Weicker on the Republican side is the all-talk, no action Arlen Specter, and while he initially opposed Brown v. Board of Education, and continued to oppose forced school desegregation (on “states’ rights issues), I don’t know of anybody that would be as much fun to watch chair a committee as Sam Ervin was, back then (he also had a hand in bringing down Tailgunner Joe McCarthy, back in the day).
But, we’ll see what happens. It might just be that the Abu Gonzalez will force the Democrats to do the right thing, in spite of themselves. They need a good kick in the ass, and I can’t say as I blame them, to be honest. We know they’ll be trashed in the traditional media if they try to bring dear leader to justice, and if they aren’t really, really certain that the people will have their backs when they vote to impeach and convict – the “convict” part is the important thing that an awful lot of people seem to forget about – and that they’ll be given the boot (not in favor of Republicans or third-party ego maniacal loser candidates, but in their primaries) if they fail to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States of America, then they’ll take the easy way out. Who can blame them? I tend to take the easy way out of things, myself.
I’m firsty! :40: :alc:
Now I gotta go see what fresh horrors have been wrought upon us today…. :omg:
I need to spend a few minutes in the Liberal Confessional this morning. I’ve been bad.
:priest:
I watched the 1/2 Hour News Hour on Fux Noise Channel last night.
:omg:
OK, I could only make it through the first ten minutes before I shut it off in disgust, but still. Someone at work mentioned this show to me last week, and I thought that to be fair I should at least try to watch it once before judging it. The fact that I want to spend time away from work with this woman :hubba: has absolutely nothing to do with it. π
She warned me that she didn’t find it all that funny. I should have listened.
:barf:
To be fair, there were two jokes that I laughed at a little: one about Dick Cheney pardoning Phil Spector for accidentally shooting someone, and another concerning the Underdog movie, in which Underdog attacks and eats Michael Vick.
The rest was either boring or mean. And I have a pretty good tolerance for mean if it’s funny. Which this was not.
But at least now I never have to bother watching it again. Plus I get to tell K—- she was right. Which she will enjoy.
Now go forth, and sin no more.
A——men. :priest:

Clinton woos the outsourcers that workers fear
BUFFALO, N.Y. Γ’β¬β To many labor unions and high-tech workers, the Indian giant Tata Consultancy Services is a serious threat Γ’β¬β a company that has helped move U.S. jobs to India while sending thousands of foreign workers on temporary visas to the United States.
So when Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) came to this struggling city to announce some good news, her choice of partners was something of a surprise.
Joining Tata Consultancy’s chief executive at a downtown hotel, Clinton announced that the company would open a software development office in Buffalo and form a research partnership with a local university. Tata told a newspaper that it might hire as many as 200 people.
The 2003 announcement had clear benefits for the senator and the company: Tata received good press, and Clinton burnished her credentials as a champion for New York’s depressed upstate region.

Bush Fulfills His Grandfather’s Dream
It’s remarkably common for a grandson to take up his grandfather’s major project. This occurred to me when I read recently of Thor Heyerdahl’s grandson taking up his mission to cross the Pacific on a raft. But what really struck me was the BBC story aired on July 23rd documenting President George W. Bush’s grandfather’s involvement in a 1933 plot to overthrow the U.S. government and install a fascist dictatorship. I knew the story, but had not considered the possibility that the grandson was trying to accomplish what his grandfather had failed to achieve.
Good Morning :joe:
:joe: ‘morning! :joe:
This is Novak’s column, so you should probably hold your nose and make sure you’re seated, before reading:
The morass in Iraq and deepening difficulties in Afghanistan have not deterred the Bush administration from taking on a dangerous and questionable new secret operation. High-level U.S. officials are working with their Turkish counterparts on a joint military operation to suppress Kurdish guerrillas and capture their leaders. Through covert activity, their goal is to forestall Turkey from invading Iraq.

JUDITH Giuliani is an opportunistic, puppy-killing homewrecker who has a full-time hairstylist and needs an extra seat on planes for “Baby Louis,” her Louis Vuitton handbag – at least according to a hatchet job on the former mayor’s wife in the September issue of Vanity Fair.

“Vulture funds were first introduced by the billionaire Paul Singer, who in 1996 paid $11 million for discounted Peruvian debt and then threatened to bankrupt the country unless they paid him $58 million in order to keep good standing in international financial markets,” said the group TransAfrica Forum.
