Hard to believe this is the last day of August already. When you’re a kid, you hear the old people talk about how fast the years go by, but you don’t really appreciate it until you’re the old guy, bitching about time flying (and your aches and pains), and repeating all of your old stories while the young folk effect those stone-faced, semi-smiling looks as they try their best to tune you out to keep from going fucking crazy. Pretty soon, all that’ll be left is talking about how many medications you’re on, and discussing the quality of your BM’s. Is it any wonder Peggy Lee sang, “is that all there is?”
But, it’s a three-day weekend coming up, and that’s a good thing (first day off for me since July 4th, and that’s waaaaaay too long). And we have visitors coming too. Granny’s daughter and her husband are coming with the little one, who I have yet to meet. They’ll be showing off the kid to her great grandparents, so that ought to be fun. We can sit around and tell all the old stories, and talk about our BM’s and whatnot. ‘Cuz, well, that’s all there is.

check the tail end of yesterday’s thread. WOOT!
Fifty Iraqis will be freed from U.S. prisons in Iraq each day during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, the office of Iraq’s Sunni Arab Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi said on Friday.
The U.S. military said this week it had reached a deal with Hashemi to conduct “special Ramadan releases” of detainees during the holy month, which begins in the second week of September.
It was unclear when the releases would start, but the military said they could begin as early as this week. The U.S. military says it is holding 23,000 Iraqis.

Thank you. I was beginning to think I was the only person in the country who doesn’t give a shit about this. The Bush/Cheney regime are destroying the country, and all that was on the network news last night was this crap.
:fu:
But on to the good stuff…
LET’S DISCO, EVERYBODY!

This started out as sort of a Philadelphia Harold Melvin/Salsoul kind of groove, but now it sounds more like Chic. Yes, I’ve spent way too much time listening to the disco channel since I got digital radio with my cable package.
Did someone say PACKAGE? :hubba:
OK, everyone. Time to tap your feet!
:omg:
Chorus:
Wide stance
When I saw you on the toilet, thought I’d take a chance
Wide stance
Won’t you come into my stall and do the dirty dance
Wide stance
Going down and then a reach-around could be romance
When I drop my pants
Wide stance
Verse 1:
Down at the airport my dreams take flight
Here in the men’s room, any time is right
Of all the airplanes, yours is the best
Inside my hangar it will come to rest
You stood behind me and you slipped inside
Then you found out just why my stance is wide
Repeat chorus
Verse 2:
Back in the Senate I’m a macho man
I’ll tap my foot, then you can tap my can
My power’s great, you know, my wallet’s fat
Now here’s my card, what do you think of that?
Your filibuster’s hanging long and low
Oh won’t you let me be your Ida-ho?
Repaet chorus
Bridge:
My stance on gay-rights issues wears a different shoe
I wag my finger, tell you just what not to do
I really hope this won’t make me a hypocrite
Does my wide stance
Just pack my ass
All full of shit?
Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow!
Wide stance!

You know how you can tell someone is not gay? They don’t hold news conferences to proclaim that they are not gay!
:rofl2:
I guess there’s just something wrong with us, Kev. See if you can get somebody to pray for our souls. π
4 in the AM for me here.
“We can sit around and tell all the old stories, and talk about our BMΓ’β¬β’s and whatnot. Γ’β¬ΛCuz, well, thatΓ’β¬β’s all there is.”
theres a 4 AM thought if i ever saw one.
i make lists of the other stuff just to be ornery, kids have kid stuff to deal with, we have old fart stuff to deal with.
when the kiddoos start to give me that look i take em where they want to go and remind em that we’re all standing on the shoulders of the giants that went before us.
assholes are assholes, young or old. the main difference being that when you’re young you have a chance to grow out of it.
This morning I heard a car ad on the radio that referred to the vehicle’s “wide stance.” :rofl2:
just realising
that in the last 4 days
i’ve learned more about toilet flirtation
than i ever thought i’d know. it all reeks of sadness.
I know. I had no idea public restrooms were teeming with so much action. I’ve always though they were just stinky places to be avoided as much as possible, and never considered them venues for romantic encounters. Though I suppose there probably isn’t a whole lot of romance involved.
Here’s a cheery little e-mail I got today:
Oh, well, as long as they “assure me” that my SS# is safe.

nice lyrics! i picture a scene from a mel brooks movie. one foot reaches out from under a stalll – tap, tap, tap. on the other side of the stage, the spotlight picks out an answering foot — tap, tap, tap. the tapping spreads out all over the stage — sort of a gayer riverdance effect. finally, widestance taps his way to center stage and breaks out into song.
and widestance is played by christopher walken!

US Lawmakers’ Plane Under Fire in Iraq
WASHINGTON (AP) – A military cargo plane carrying three senators and a House member was forced to take evasive maneuvers and dispatch flares to avoid ground fire after taking off from Baghdad on Thursday night.
The lawmakers said their plane, a C-130, was under fire from three rocket-propelled grenades over the course of several minutes as they left for Amman, Jordan.
“It was a scary moment,” said Sen. Mel Martinez, R-Fla., who said he had just taken off his body armor when he saw a bright flash outside the window. “Our pilots were terrific. … They banked in one direction and then banked the other direction, and they set off the flares.”
Sens. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., and James Inhofe, R-Okla., as well as Rep. Bud Cramer, D-Ala., were also on the plane.

A Sobering Census Report: AmericansΓ’β¬β’ Meager Income Gains
The Census Bureau reported yesterday that median household income rose 0.7 percent last year Γ’β¬β its second annual increase in a row Γ’β¬β to $48,201. The share of households living in poverty fell to 12.3 percent from 12.6 percent in 2005. This seems like welcome news, but a deeper look at the belated improvement in these numbers Γ’β¬β more than five years after the end of the last recession Γ’β¬β underscores how the gains from economic growth have failed to benefit most of the population.
The median household income last year was still about $1,000 less than in 2000, before the onset of the last recession. In 2006, 36.5 million Americans were living in poverty Γ’β¬β 5 million more than six years before, when the poverty rate fell to 11.3 percent.
And what is perhaps most disturbing is that it appears this is as good as itΓ’β¬β’s going to get.
I think it would be very interesting to see how the demodorps and independuces would vote on “liberal” legislation if there were no rethugs in the way to cause a lot of legislation to have a no snowballs chance in H* of passing.

I think I would prefer the risk of being called “immature” over becoming a “mature” miserable old fart.
Most spiders are solitary creatures. So the discovery of a vast web crawling with millions of spiders that is spreading across several acres of a North Texas park is causing a stir among scientists, and park visitors.
Sheets of web have encased several mature oak trees and are thick enough in places to block out the sun along a nature trail at Lake Tawakoni State Park, near this town about 50 miles east of Dallas.
The gossamer strands, slowly overtaking a lakefront peninsula, emit a fetid odor, perhaps from the dead insects entwined in the silk. The web whines with the sound of countless mosquitoes and flies trapped in its folds.

In a stark departure from past practice, the American Cancer Society plans to devote its entire $15 million advertising budget this year not to smoking cessation or colorectal screening but to the consequences of inadequate health coverage.
The campaign was born of the groupΓ’β¬β’s frustration that cancer rates are not dropping as rapidly as hoped, and of recent research linking a lack of insurance to delays in detecting malignancies.
Though the advertisements are nonpartisan and pointedly avoid specific prescriptions, they are intended to intensify the political focus on an issue that is already receiving considerable attention from presidential candidates in both parties.

A Chinese man has videotaped a large white animal swimming in the Yangtze River that experts say is a member of a dolphin species unique to China and feared extinct, the official Xinhua news agency said Wednesday.
The last confirmed sighting of a member of the species, the long-beaked, nearly blind baiji, was in 2004. After an international team failed to find a single dolphin on a six-week expedition along the Yangtze last year, the species was classified as critically endangered and possibly extinct. But the videotape from central Anhui Province may renew slim hopes for the survival of the creature, also known as the white-flag dolphin.

Nah, we’ll just use backing tracks like disco singers used to do when they played club dates back in the day. Boy, did that piss off the musicians. π
Thanks for the kind words, everybody. Mentioning Mel Brooks is probably the highest flattery I could receive. Blazing Saddles is one of my favorite movies of all time, and I’ve seen and enjoyed just about all of the others.
Around the time Silent Movie came out, I bought an album with music from the movie on one side, and sort of Mel’s greatest hits (Springtime for Hitler, Blazing Saddles, The French Mistake, etc.) on the other. I’ll have to check Amazon to see if it’s still in print. Cuz I miss it.
So are we taking bets on when Wide Stance officially resigns? No way would Rove resist doing a news dump of this magnitude going into a three-day weekend. I’ll take 6:55 tonight, just late enough to not make the network news on the East coast.
And if any of you are listening to your iPods this weekend in a public restroom, be sure not to tap your feet.

Granny, it is the coolest. I’m 6′ and there was more than enough room. The transmission is very different. ran like poop for the first week and then i tried a few motorcycle diagnostic trix i’d picked up working on old brit bikes and found a manifold leak, the manifold was slightly warped.
the fiat guys told me it needed machining which i could’nt afford so i filed it by hand, threw on a new gasket and voila!
ran like a top from that time on. gas was about 25 cents a gallon then.
Wasn’t Fiat sold and became a Yugo? I had a friend who had one of those too and the clutch cable (linkage?) was plastic. It broke on a regular basis. We got to push that one too.
At least a Fiat is small and easy to push. Try pushing a 64 Chevy Biscayne. Although, I never had to push that car much. It had a 283 V8 and was quite a reliable car. I sure do miss that car, it was great for road trips with a lot of people. It had the ad on ac unit that blew 32 degrees F and would have worked great if I had gotten my windows tinted. Lotta windows in that car. And I miss wing windows that you could aim the air at your face. I miss a lot of things π
