Another birthday today, as Janeane Garofalo hits the big 4-3 today. Happy Birthday, Janeane. I was gonna give you the really cool present I got Marc for his birthday, but I didn’t want you to think I was stalking you, either.
Happy Friday everybody!
ROXIE, my computer was bad this day. Thus sending a zillion posts for Marc…his comment space does not work for me so just send posts and pixs. :billcat: :pup: :cat: :knit: :peace:
:dancers:
Plus, the people who went to see it were “credit readers,†so I’d have to hang out that much longer.

Hey, I stay for the credits sometimes. Gotta problem with that? :nana:
Happy birthday Janeane :cake:
Go Bulls!
Both the House and Senate passed legislation to expand the SCHIP program, so that more kids can get health insurance (which dubya is threatening to veto). It passed by a veto-proof margin in the Senate, but not in the House. The vote is here. Sadly, 8 House Democrats voted against the bill. Even more sad, Dennis Kucinich was one of them.
Even my Republican scumbag Bush rubber stamp Congress creep voted for it.
Not since I quit running movies almost 20 years ago. I read the credits now, too. But back then, I was young, had a life, and wanted to go out and whoop it up after work. Now, well, let’s just say I have time to read the credits.
Update on situation inside Burma
(1) Yesterday night (Sep 27 in Rangoon), the junta’s security forces have raided some major Monasteries in Rangoon, Mandalay, Pakkoku, Sittwe, Mon Ywar and many other cities. In Rangoon, we can confirm that at least a dozen of Monasteries in Tamwe, Thingangyun, South Okkalapa, Bahan and North Okkalapa Townships. Soldiers came at midnight or early morning and entered the monastery compounds with force. Then they run to the monasteries as they were trying to occupy the enemy camps, by shooting, shouting and beating anyone on their ways and destroying and stealing all belongings. A number of monks were killed and several others were severely injured during the raids. In Rangoon alone, over seven hundred monks were arrested yesterday night.
I was wondering what the word for citizens of Myanmar is? Myanmartians?
Myanmarians? But then that would make them all Catholic.
Sue P, I am assuming that your husband was preparing at least his meals. Last year before I went back to Va. to move my dad into an assisted living situation, our concern about his dietary habits led me to set up daily deliveries from a meals on wheels program which delivered a meal a day. Not haute cuisine but it was better than what he was doing. Perhaps you can find something similar to augment your food situation. I am sure there are similar programs where you are. I think that we were paying $5 a day. BTW, Cottage cheese and many different fruits and veg used to work for me. My great aunt got me hooked on cottage cheese and maple syrup.
When I was convalescing a few years ago, I got into the pizza delivery (great excuse) but I doubt there is much good pizza out your way.
roxie, sorry about the C&L link. They work OK for me but this one was another speech from dick cheney from 1992 explaining why they did not topple Saddam then that was tragically prescient.
Stay well!
Janeane Garofalo, :cake: , I know you’re checking us out.
A little wiki sourced music trivia but fact
RCA voiced objections to the phrase “up against the wall, motherfucker” in the lyrics of Kantner’s song “We Can Be Together,” but the group were able to prevent it from being censored by pointing out that RCA had already allowed the offending word to be included on the cast album of the rock musical Hair, although the company did replace it with the word “fred” in the accompanying lyric sheet.
wiki missed this one
We are all outlaws in the eyes of america
In order to survive we steal cheat lie forge fred hide and deal
We are obscene lawless hideous dangerous dirty violent and young
But that was before the :40: :bong: :alc: :fire:
Well, if you want to eat cheap and simple, you need to think like a college student. Yes, Ramen noodles. They hadn’t been invented when I was school, so I used to stock up on generic Mac and Cheese. Can’t get much easier to make, and it was only 19 cents a box back then. It says to use butter, but you don’t need it. If you have an extra buck, you can throw a can of tuna in there, or some veggies.
Another cheapo specialty I had was casserole. Get some egg noodles and boil ’em up, then put ’em in a pot, add some veggies, tuna, or whatever you can catch scurrying around in the kitchen, throw in a can of cream-o-whatever soup, throw some cheese on top if you have any, cover and bake for an hour or so. Take the cover off after 45 minutes or so, and maybe add some more cheese to the top. This lets the cheese and top get nice and brown and crusty.
Also, never let anybody tell you you can’t microwave something. You can microwave anything. You can also barbeque anything. Oh, it may not be great, but it gets hot and it won’t kill you, so WTF?
:joe: :joe: :joe: :joe: :joe: 😮 😮 😮 😮 😯 😯 😯

A box of Mrs Grasses’ Noodle soup, package of spinach and a lb of ground beef…..cook all toether in a big pot-serve with a hard loaf of good bread- perfect fall/winter cheap easy eats :cat:
Interesting that XM Radio dropped their ABC News channel. This caused all their right wing talking nut-jobs like Sean Hannity and Mark Levin to go fleeing to the other rethug XM channels. Of course this then caused a few of the B-lister Fascists to get pushed aside. Cleaning house so to speak.
Sue P .. You need to introduce yourself to the frozen food section in the supermarket and in particular the frozen dinners section.. PJ is absolutely correct there are microwaveable things of every description and they usually won’t set your budget back either.
The Kroger markets around here let you shop over the internet.and they deliver as long as you are not more than 5 miles from the nearest store for some small fee
If you main distraction on the weekends was your trip to the supermarket and to do the laundry this considerable change in your lifestyle may rake some getting used to. 😮
Hell, I’ve been known to microwave non-microwave pizza. Is it great? No. But you can eat it with a spork.
Oh, and everything’s better with hot sauce.
And don’t forget, we have Gypsy’s recipes (though we no longer seem to have Gypsy, these days).
Hey, Happy Birthday Janeane! :cake: And Happy Birthday to Mama tomorrow :cake: :cake:
If you can’t stomach hot sauce there is always ketchup 😮 and salsa 😮 😮
fred,
re #9, since the fall of 1969 in spite of a multitude of friends named ‘fred’ that Airplane thing has always been stuck in my befuddled brain. Of course, I don’t go around telling folks to ‘fred you’ but that day might be coming as things go.

PJ, Vernon, Fred and Druid,
Thanks for all the suggestions. PJ you have the right words, “anything is microwavable”. I really can’t deal with the stove. That infernal appliance exists just to destroy whatever efforts I do make by BURNING not only the food but the pan. I do like the microwave though, because it listens to instructions. “Do this for 30 seconds and then stop.” Clever little box it is.
I checked out frozen food and it seemed there was hope. I’m going to try. Hubby probably won’t complain, poor guy, knowing how easily I can be discouraged.
Hubby is the cook around here and if he doesn’t want to cook there are lots of decent, inexpensive restaurants in Brooklyn, including great pizza places which I have discovered also have other things like calzones and spaghetti and things hubby will eat the I wont, like meatballs.
Delivery is the problem because only very local places deliver and they aren’t great cooks. So, the trouble with take-out is parking. If there are two people, one can run into the store, while the other can move the car if necessary and avoid those $50+ parking tickets.
Red Hook is a strange part of Brooklyn, as it is not very far from Manhattan and shopping of all sorts, But there’s no subway and unbelievably bad bus service. On the other hand, there’s parking in Red Hook and people here own cars and drive to do most shopping.
We recently got a great big supermarket around the corner. Before Fairway came the only local shopping was bodegas. If you had a pink twinkie fetish they were your source, but not for things like cottage cheese, skim milk, or frozen edible food. The new supermarket has everything from prepared food to gourmet cheese. I have been there many times in the past week and I’m actually beginning to be able to find my way around.
But, the biggest change was the purchase of a shopping cart, yesterday. Perhaps there’s hope.
Stoves are to heat frozen French fries..and broil hamburgers and steaks in the winter time nothing else.. :reaper: :reaper:
Hearthman’s naivety is such a bunch of :crap: It’s broken ..busted.. doesn’t work any longer ( as if it worked except possibly by accident in the beginning) nothing will happen until the people push back in such a way that the politicians won’t repeat this this crap for another 60 years.
:gate: :omg: :jason: :jason: :fist:
One thing you don’t want to do after a night on the town, is to toss a cookie sheet full of frozen french fries in the oven, and then go fall asleep on the couch.
Trust me.
Fortunately, you can microwave them, too. Oh, they kinda suck that way, but if you blast ’em with enough hot sauce, they’re not too bad.
I guess we’ll have to get our french fries from Nathans in Coney Island.

top ramen with an egg flower in it. whip up an egg and add to hot ramen.
re-microwave with egg if not cooked (remember salmonella)!
add a sprinkle of parmesen,
rough shred if you can get it. and a sprinkle of chopped chives or green onions.
voila: egg flower soup!!!
For high school students everywhere, this revealing amphibian may be a cut above regular frogs.
That’s because the see-through frog does not require dissection to see its organs, blood vessels, and eggs.
Masayuki Sumida, a professor at the Institute for Amphibian Biology at Japan’s Hiroshima University, bred the frog to be a humane learning tool.

Gingrich takes step toward ’08 run
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich will open a website by Monday in an effort to round up the $30 million in pledges that he says would be his ticket to entering the race for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination.
A longtime adviser, J. Randolph Evans of McKenna Long & Aldridge, will hold a press briefing at 3:30 p.m. Monday in Atlanta to describe plans for what Gingrich aides are calling a “feasibility assessment.â€
Aides say Gingrich will announce his intentions by Oct. 21, ahead of a Michigan filing deadline.

Commodities Head for Biggest Monthly Increase in 32 Years (“Skyrocketing”)
Sept. 28 (Bloomberg) — Commodities headed for the biggest monthly gain in 32 years, led by wheat, crude oil and gold, as the dollar’s slump enhanced the appeal of energy, grains and precious metals as a hedge against inflation.
The 19-commodity Reuters/Jefferies CRB Index was up 8.7 percent this month, the most since July 1975. Wheat climbed to a record in September amid a global grain shortfall, boosting corn and soybeans. Oil also hit a record, and gold reached a 27-year high. The Federal Reserve cut borrowing costs to bolster the U.S. economy, sending the dollar tumbling.
“The Fed has signaled pretty clearly that they will answer the problem of a slowing economy with greater liquidity,” said Chip Hanlon, who manages $1 billion at Delta Global Advisors Inc. in Huntington Beach, California. “We’re in a bullish phase for commodities.”
`Skyrocketing’
The rate cut sparked inflation concerns. Some investors buy commodities to hedge against rising consumer prices, and the falling dollar makes raw materials priced in the U.S. currency cheaper for buyers holding other currencies. The cut in U.S. borrowing costs will continue to weaken the dollar and lead to “skyrocketing” prices for commodities, Jim Rogers, chairman of Beeland Interests Inc., said in an interview this week. He co-founded the Quantum Hedge Fund with George Soros in the 1970s.
