At some point today, we’ll probably hit 300,000 visitors since December 14, 2005. Not exactly Yahoo-type traffic, but not bad for a small cult following of a defunct radio show (actually, two defunct radio shows, and a more or less defunct radio network). Things have slowed down quite a bit since the early days, of course, but what the hell; we’re still here. We don’t give up easy. John Kerry could learn a lot from us.

In Afghanistan, the army is employing anthropologists to help them understand the local population. The army says it is seeing success from this approach while some anthropologists argue that social scientists who participate are helping military occupations that hurt these populations and make the science appear to be an arm of the military. It’s an interesting read but these sentences seemed very interesting in light of Bush’s SCHIP veto:

Anderson’s orders, and the orders of 1,161 other Minnesota guard members, were written for 729 days. Had they been written for 730 days, just one day more, the soldiers would receive those benefits to pay for school.

Fred, we fail to help people build towards a self sustaining future. Free medical care is nice but if Afghanistan cannot support itself and grow then the affect of the medical care is exactly what you say, a carrot on a stick.
Scientists said yesterday that they have extracted a ton of rock from deep inside California’s San Andreas fault, the first time anyone has collected samples from a geologically active fault zone where earthquakes are spawned.
Bored out from more than two miles below the surface, the rock samples include substantial amounts of the soft mineral serpentine, which the scientists said may play a significant role in the creation and physics of fault zones and earthquakes.
