Things aren’t so good here. It’s all I can do to write this. On Thursday evening after work, I took my dog, Siggy, to the park, as I do pretty much every night. It was a dark, cold, rainy, crappy evening, which is generally OK by me. Siggy went off into the woods as he always does. Unfortunately, he never came back out again. I wandered about in the rain calling and whistling. A dark day became a black night, and my wife came out with flashlights as we slogged through the mud and the poring rain for hours, until it became clear that Siggy wasn’t coming. I went back out to the park yesterday morning at the break of dawn (such as it was; more constant rain), and plodded through the woods in every direction I could think of. I’d hoped that, in the daylight, Siggy would make his way to the open park area, but he wasn’t there. This park is surrounded by thousands of acres of heavy woods, and my only hope was that, if I came close enough and yelled loud enough, he’d hear me and come running.
He either didn’t hear me, or he wasn’t in a position to come to me. I spent most of yesterday there, with a brief break in between to dry my clothes, and warm my hands a bit. I truly believe that Siggy would have come back to the park if he could have. This either means that he’d gotten so lost in the dark that he was unable to find his way back, or something happened to him. I can’t bear to think about the things that may have happened to him.
I know not all of you are animal people (let alone dog people). If you are, then you know how I feel right now. If you’re not, then I envy you, because I’d give everything I have not to feel the way I do right now. Siggy isn’t just a part of my family; he’s my best friend. Pretty much my only friend, to tell you the truth (except for my wife, of course). I really don’t know what I’m going to do.
/|\Siggy :knit:
PJ, I don’t know how to tell you how terrible I feel.
I have always had cats and dogs and they have been much loved. The loss of any one of them has always been a searing pain.
Some years ago, I picked up a stray kitten with infected eyes, among other physical disasters. Many vet bills later, he was a healthy boy but although he had some sight he never saw well. He was quite a cat.
He had a battle cap collection that he added to whenever he found one. he stored them under a cushion in the couch and one day my husband threw them all away. Mickey never would look at another cap.
One day Mickey got out of the house. We lived on a busy street in an ungentrified neighborhood. My husband and I searched for days. We called him. and searched the block. I went out at all times of the day and night. Three nights later, in the wee hours of the morning, I went out again and when I called him I heard him cry. I found him in an alley. He was very hungry but otherwise unhurt and glad to be home.
I wish I could help, PJ.

❓ ❓ ❓ ❓ Whatever :sheep: le
You probably already are doing, but Standard for lost animals….. Post Copies of Siggy around park. Call constantly (and go by) Animal Shelter. Let them (Animal Shelter) get use to your voice.
Was told by other Cat Woman to me when I called for my cat for days just in tears by then:
NOT SO STANDARD but worked on a :cat: very “frightened” cat from mountains, then moved again:
Put his Scat/Poop near and around last place you saw him run into. The “scat” would call him to the park. If you walk to park Put His Scat for on the way home — if you have so much. If running low on :crap: , one may put a cat box out just to have a familiar smell. (That was ALL I had to do for my missing kitty — and it EVEN SEEMED to worked. ;)) /|\ :yinyang: :knit:
Sorry to hear about Siggy.. Dogs generally have a pretty good sense of where home is I am sure Siggy will find his way back if at all possible.
:priest: :rabbi: :billcat:
pj, I am not really one of the animal people and except for a few fleeting moments in my life in relationships or feeding my friends’ fish have never had a ‘pet’ since I lost my dog at age 8 some 30 years ago 😉 . However, from my time here I sort of think of Siggy as my pal and I anxiously await his safe return.
I hope that we soon see the MSBlog rocking with :pup: emos and more dog walking stories. I will be expecting a daylight savings time report soon.
As someone used to say, :cake: :menorah: 🙁
That always reminds me of Tom Bodett.
PJ I’ll send all the positive energy I can, and definitely check the local shelter. Siggy has a tag right?
pj-I can only imagine how dark today must seem. We’ve got a 12 year old Austrailian Shepard which came with the family when I married into it. We’ve got him inside a ridiculously small overly landscaped yard and in a garage that’s always too hot. He’d love to be running free in some huge wild woods.
He’ll stand for hours in a cold wind and let the breeze sculpt his fur with his eyes closed. He ferousiously protects us from all outsiders.
As much as we love him, he’d proably take the freedom.
I hope Siggy enjoys the freedom but doesn’t forget the love there at home and comes back to tell you about it. Dogs can be very adaptable. Don’t give up hope :penguin: :pup: :peace:
Oh PJ, I wish I could help you look for him :fire: I hope he’s alright. Good luck!
Oh..PJ
I don’t know what to say except to share this story about Digit and to let you know that I am holding out hope for your pup. :knit: Druid has some really good suggestions.
pj, if you or RG can keep us updated at your convenience, it would be appreciated.
If anyone has any roxie news, I’d love to hear it. I am guessing Mr. ‘Soupy’ is getting/hopping along OK and heel healing.
I hope I haven’t missed any of the ailing or missing here.
:ear:
I wish my first thought this morning had been right. I thought maybe pj had already thrown up his hands on the new job and decided to go to law school.
Thanks everybody. I don’t mean to be such a downer. We spent today tacking up flyers and sticking them in mailboxes (while listening to SU get killed once again)
There are a lot of really great people out there, and it really restores your faith in humanity. Ran into a guy who was taking his dog out to look, because the dog had found a lost puppy a week before. Saw a bunch of dog people, who said they were on the lookout, too.
Unfortunately, I just can’t get past the thought that my best friend is out there scared and lonely and hurt and dying a horrible death – hurt where I can’t find him. If I drink enough beer, I can get to sleep for an hour or two, but then snap awake in the middle of the night, and can’t get back to sleep.
I just don’t know what to do. Sorry to be such a baby, and to be such a bummer.
You’re not being a baby, I was the same way when my Stella bear ran off. 🙁
PJ, lost is a lot more likely than hurt and dying. I think if he had gotten hurt you would have heard him yelp. I’m glad you got the good people in you area to keep and eye out. Have you called the shelters as Druid suggested?
Thanks for letting us know what is happening.
pj, with all of our stuff you put up with, you’ve got a long way to go before you exhaust your goodwill. It is your sandbox (and Siggy’s) and we are just happy to play in it. We want to hear from you and know.
Toss back a few and hope with us for a better tomorrow.
:cake: :menorah:
PJ,
A neighbour’s dog was lost in the woods near our place and they went out every day looking for him and took food out in his bowl, and on the SIXTH day, he wandered out and is fine now, so we are all hoping that your guy will be fine also.
Not being the animal guy, I was thinking about that food thing myself as you probably already have.
pj- This was the last thing to check on before I go to bed. I hope there’s better news for you tomorrow or soon.
We’re all keeping a :menorah: on for Siggy.
take care, big guy
Oh, PJ, I’m so sorry about Siggy, and I do know how you feel, because I’ve been there. I won’t go into details unless you ask, but you’re doing everything right. Get those posters out as quickly and as many of them as you can. Call ALL of your local police departments and give them your number in case anyone calls that they found Siggy. Get posters to them too if you can. Also contact animal shalters in case someone finds him and turns him in.
If Siggy is an older dog, his sense of smell might not be what it used to be and he may not have been able to find his way back to you. For what it’s worth, though, usually if someone finds a lost dog, they either take him in and call the police or take him to a shelter.
Please keep us informed.
