Monday, isn’t that just great? Well at least it’s only a three day week (for me, anyway). Got the new stereo hooked up, all the speaker wires puled and all that. Pain in the ass. Had a pretty nifty setup program built into it, though. Came with a microphone, which you put where you’re going to sit (up to eight different locations), and it sends test tones out every speaker, then calculates their their locations and distances, and automagically sets them at the optimum levels. Pretty cool.
Now if I could just win the lottery so I wouldn’t have to go to work.

pj- If your ears were burning a little about an hour ago, it was the local sports babble station leading off their morning drive show talking with some ESPN guy about the Syracuse football situation. I guess Greg Robinson (former D coach for the Broncos) is about to get tossed. They were talking about how awful Syracuse is :rant1: They’re both Syracuse alumni.
The good news- Syracuse BASKETBALL :dancers:
Yeah, believe me, that’s what we’re talking about here, re football. Speculation is that they’re too cheap to buy out his contract (one year to go), and/or the AD is unwilling to admit he made a mistake. I feel bad for Robinson, since this was his chance to be a head coach. But we’re heading in the wrong direction (been a long, slow dive to the bottom, starting with the previous coach, with this one crash diving). It’s not that they lose, but that they’re horrible.
Hoops, though, looks to be a fun team. Young, and likely to lose some games from crappy D and turnovers, but so far they’re a lot of fun to watch (I have to try to watch quietly, of course, because yelling at the teevee is for uncouth, brain dead idiot morons).
We’ll see. It makes the long, cold, dark winter a bit shorter, warmer and brighter if they do well. Especially if they do well in Hi-Def!

About a quarter of detainees who were cleared to leave Guantanamo Bay prison after hearings in 2005 and 2006 remain in custody, raising questions among inmates and their lawyers about the legitimacy of the system of hearings to review evidence against the prisoners.
more stories like this
The military’s failure to release all of those who were cleared to leave – combined with the fact that dozens of other inmates who were not cleared have nonetheless been released – has led many inmates and their lawyers to contend that the system is a sham, and that the real decisions are being made elsewhere.
The military says most of the cleared inmates remain in custody because of difficulties in negotiating terms of their release to their home countries. But officials also acknowledge that the hearings are not the final decision on an inmate’s fate, and that the Pentagon retains the power to hold even those who have been cleared by the three-officer panels who review the inmates’ cases.

Now, let me see if I have this straight: This is a democracy in which we follow the rule of law not of men. Correct?
So you can be declared “not guilty” by a court but some pentagon guy (let me guess..uuuummmmm…CHENEY) gets to make the real decision. Does this sound like a third world dictatorship (SBR, I know Fred) or am I just a crazy lefty?

NYC schools are now under the control of the mayor who, of course is going to make them better. He has the help of our “Education President” (though not educated preznit).
So it will come as a big thrill that NYC kids are doing much better in NYC reading and math tests, and that the gap between white and minority achievement is closing.
Please disregard the results from national test which show neither to be true.
Now NYC is giving letter grades to schools and, as per No Child Left Behind, these grades will reflect the improvement a school has made.
Last year I was in a school that was one of the worst I have seen. It’s scores were very low BUT they were better than the year before so that school got an A.
Another school I worked in has had consistently good scores. But, the scores did not go up very much. That school got a C.
If you wanted to place a child in a good school you would assume the school graded A would be the better school, but in fact the school graded C is much better.
If thee are any budding Kafkas out there you may wish to serve an internship at the NYC Board of Ed.
Yes we are a nation of laws .. the current politicians seem to be doing quite well at making up their own… :reaper: :reaper:
Any one see Orwell standing under that light pole .. hummm maybe that was Rod Sterling instead .. :tap: :tap:
Mr. Education preznit’s law says that all children should be on grade level by 2014.
Grade level used to be calculated as the average child’s achievement. If it is an average, then by definition some children will be above and some below.
Or, one could define grade level in such a way that everyone achieves it.
Or, one could go to Lake Woebegone where all the children are above average.
I guess that technique makes a school that is outstanding requiring no improvement get an F eventually. Must have been devised by the same people that
calculatemake up the unemployment numbers. :reaper: :reaper:Generally politicians are out to get rid of the teachers union and privatize the school system so that only those who have the $$$ can send their kids to school. So instead of the grade level being defined such that all the kids are above average it will be devised so that all the kids are flunking.. it will make a generation of idiots .. hummm.. how long has this been going on ?? :reaper: :reaper:
Fred, in fact a school in Manhattan that has excellent scores but did not improve them, did, in fact, get an F.
The parents, of course, are angry but I think the realtors will have the last word, as good schools are part of the price of a house.
Around here the schools are financed by local property taxes and moneys from the state general fund. ,, One of the reasons people move here is because the property taxes are rather low. As the baby boomer sociopaths ( aka rethugs) retire they will of course say .. well I don’t have any kids in school, don’t use that bridge., no house in my neighborhood has burned in 20 years so why should I pay for it … Right now its hard for a young person to major in education and be able to pay back their student loans and have a car and an apartment at the same time. She has previously indicated a litany of criminal corruption, malfeasance, and cover-ups concerning the penetration of the FBI and Departments of State and Defense by foreign agents in senior positions; influence-peddling and bribery by shadowy Turkish interests throughout the U.S. government over several administrations; undisclosed information related to 9/11; including alleged illegal activities of former Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert, and, most recently, two other “well-known” members of Congress who she will now name to the mainstream media.

As Owners Feel Mortgage Pain, So Do Renters
LAS VEGAS — In the foreclosure crisis of 2007, thousands of American families are losing their homes without ever missing a payment. They are renters in houses whose owners default on their mortgages — a large but little noticed class of casualties

:pirate: Dark Angel Butterfly by Hasson Chopper :dancers: :fist: A!I!V!
This mortgage banking thing is causing all sorts of problems for low income renters because the people foreclosed on whether they were the ex owners or their tenants are looking for other rental units which has upped apartment occupancy ( although most apartments rent for more than a mortgage payment) and made a lot of people seek rental houses which the $$$lords find they can rent for more than the current tenants are paying so they are evicting their tenants ( even if the lease is not up) in favor of the higher paying tenants. This forces the existing tenants to look for what has become in many palaces nonexistent housing so with winter coming on they find themselves and their families living in the local shelter even though they have a job are quite capable of paying rent if the rent was reasonable. This is causing shelter capacity problems in many places which causes the people already in the shelter to have a hard time finding other sheltered housing
This is what happens when you let market forces screw up people lives. :gate: :omg: :jason: :jason: :fist:

I heard some twit on TV say that everything would be great in ’08 because recessions are caused by “mistakes in monetary policy” and Bushco has made no such mistakes, recession is therefore, impossible.
I don’t know who she was. I was sort of half listening to CNBC, the money channel. They were all uniformly denying some late prognostication that there is better than a 50/50 chance of a recession next year.
She added that by the time the statistics say recession, the recession is over with anyway, so not to worry. I guess she thinks that the only way to tell if there is a recession is if the fed says so. :smack:
I guess she was a Bushco economic adviser.
Well Art the developers and the defense contractors have owned both the Reich and the reich in Colorado, Denver and most other Colorado cities for over 20 years .. A growing focus on fresh ideas coupled with lingering doubts about Hillary Clinton’s honesty and forthrightness are keeping the Democratic presidential contest close in Iowa, with Barack Obama in particular mounting a strong race against the national front-runner.
snip
Overall, in current preferences, 30 percent in Iowa support Obama, 26 percent Clinton and 22 percent Edwards, with 11 percent for Bill Richardson. That’s little changed since July (Edwards -4, Obama +3, both within sampling tolerances, and Clinton unchanged).
Among those who say they’re “absolutely certain” to attend a caucus, Obama has 28 percent support, Clinton 26 percent — again very close, and a contrast to Clinton’s nearly 2-1 lead over Obama nationally.

I think a recession occurs only when there is no growth or negative growth in the GNP for the previous six months.. The people in the Bush admin use Bushco math to calculate only what they want to see no matter what the facts indicate. It won’t be until FAUX news has to close because of no sponsors that we have a recession.. Remember Orwell is now in control.. nothing can go wrong… go wrong… go wrong… go wrong..
its to bad that Kucinich has no support in Iowa. 🙁 🙁
I get the definite impression that the people with the money to invest are now probably forth generation and that little to none of the money they posses they made themselves.. That is why you have elitist IDIOT MORONS running for office being financed by other elitist IDIOT MORON industrialists and bankers. :reaper: :reaper:
I can see definite advantages of robbing from the rich and giving to the poor.. make the rich work for a living at least every third generation. :paranoid: :paranoid:
One barometer of recession is state and city sales tax income.. many states and cities have seen a marked down turn in these revenues over the last six months. :reaper: :reaper: In some cases it was worse than in 2001…. 😮
I dunno, I’m kind of thinking that we’re on the brink of a depression. Our only hope is getting the right person in the presidency who can get us out of Iraq and start some public works programs to build solar and other alternative energy infrastructure. Get Amtrack back online or start fixing and rebuilding the train tracks in this country. If we don’t get the infrastructure built before oil makes it too expensive to build, it won’t get built.
Fred, Re 47 and above. Ley lines of destiny. I really think something major has to occur — like congress telling “administration” to Stand Down NOW! They are no longer in charge.
