So, I’ve been thinking more about the “Brown and Black” forum from the other night. As with the other debates (or forums or whatever you want to call them), they all but ignored Dennis Kucinich, and, to a lesser extent, Bill Richardson (Mike Gravel wasn’t there). They mostly focused on the “top” two or three, as usual. Now, you can tell me that DK and the others aren’t very likely to win, and I suppose that’s true enough. But it’s very important to hear what these other folks have to say, if for no other reason than to keep the others honest (for lack of a better term, since there’s not a whole lot of honesty to go around with the top two, IMHO). Besides, why should polls that are taken way before anybody casts a vote determine who we hear from? Shouldn’t we hear from everybody first, and then see what the polls say? The media shouldn’t be the ones to determine who the “top” candidates should be.
Then again, eight people on one stage for an hour becomes pretty ridiculous. Very little of substance is ever said, as the “frontrunner” tries to say nothing in as many words as possible, and everybody else competes to have the best soundbite. So, here’s what I think they ought to do. Have real, two-person debates, in kind of a tournament setting. Kind of like the World Cup, or the NCAAs. If you want to use the polls to rank the candidates, fine. Then #1 debates #8, #2 goes against #7, etc. Frankly, I’d love to see the “frontrunner” hold her own with Dennis Kucinich on Iraq, single-payer healthcare, you name it.
And while we’re at it, we might as well just go ahead and have a national primary. Everybody votes on one day, and the winner is the winner (let’s have instant runoff voting while we’re at it). But not in friggin’ February. Nine months is too damn long a time to have to put up with these people.
It needn’t be “single elimination,” of course. In fact, since they insist on starting this process so goddamn early, there’s plenty of time to have a round robin, where everybody gets to debate everybody at least once or twice. And never mind having these traditional media moderators, who yack it up and get more air time than the candidates. They’re not running for anything, so they ought to shut the fuck up. Pick a single debate topic (Iraq, Global Warming, jobs, healthcare, whatever; something that’s actually important, as opposed to “diamonds or pearls,” fer chrissakes), and let ’em go at it for an hour.
After a few months of those, I bet you’d see quite a shakeup in the “top tier,” and maybe – just maybe – we’d get some decent candidates for a change.
Hmm. Freezing rain right now, but they say we might have a foot (or more) of snow by this time tomorrow.
There was a really interesting candidates’ forum on CSpan Saturday afternoon from Iowa. Five of the eight Dems participated (Biden, Richardson and Gravel were missing). Each participant had about 20 minutes to listen to stories from community activists and respond to their questions.
The format allowed for more in-depth answers rather than just soundbites. This is what we need to make more informed decisions, not clownfests like the debates. I never would have found out about it if the Kucinich campaign hadn’t sent out an e-mail, so forget about the average voter having something like this on their radar.
Edwards and Kucinich came off the best, I thought, but Dodd and Obama did well too. Hillary got booed for a wussy answer to a question about immigration, although she had to participate over the phone due to the weather and was not there to take the abuse in person.
Every time I see Obama, he just sounds like the same old thing. Hillary with Dumbo ears.

Just another way we’re spreading Western-style democracy to Iraq and the Middle East.
Yeah snow is fun..unless you have to drive in it…I have been stressing about this all weekend.
So it seems wind is the issue here in oregon and this is very sad
Eh, I was pretty much born driving in the snow, so it’s no big deal. Ice – especially black ice – is bad stuff, ‘cuz there’s not much you can do about it.
I’m home from the trenches and feeling much better than I did last week. Both dogs have a bump on their front paw. Vet gave me steroids for them to see if that will take down the swelling. We’ll have to decide what to do next week. Whatever it is, it does not seem to be bothering them.
A high school student hunting fossils in the badlands of his native North Dakota discovered an extremely rare mummified dinosaur that includes not just bones but also seldom seen fossilized soft tissue such as skin and muscles, scientists will announce today.
The 25-foot-long hadrosaur found by Tyler Lyson in an ancient river flood plain in the dinosaur-rich Hell Creek Formation is apparently the most complete and best preserved of the half-dozen mummified dinosaurs unearthed since early in the last century, they said.

Say…who will be covering all the AAR shows when all the hosts are off cruising on the S.S. Oosterdam?
What a good question, Colette. Perhaps we’ll get more Seder and Maron. T’would be nice.

Well, so far our big storm is kind of a bust.
It came here instead WIND AND INTENSE STORM. I open a door outside and have to fight to keep standing. I had wonderful Monterey Pines …HUGE that had to be cut down …so I immediately planted 13-15 ft REDWOODS. I am still destroyed. Even when I heard that up and down the West Coast not just in CA … they caused 95% of damage. The wind has taken down all drain pipes from roof.
Snow is frightening. I keep saying one does NOT WANT an automatic vehicle. EVEN SLOW vehicle slides until it hits something.
My Advice: for what is worth…
DRIVE SLOW IN LOW GEAR. If you have to slam on breaks, to late. Tap touch is “the key”.
GUYS or SNOW DRIVERS — has prob better adivice.
I have had for more than 20 years a 4 wheel drive. I now (no longer diesel) only have a regular low-gas SunFire (Royal cool 8) Blue) new for me old vehicle is auto(matic) eek ๐ฎ
AND I H A V E to go out on certain errands [

A reminder that HBO Signature is re-running the entire second season of Big Love in two-hour blocks beginning tonight. They’ll be running two episodes per weeknight through next Monday, from 8-10 PM EST and again from 8-10 PM PST on Signature West. The season 2 DVD is coming out next week, so they probably won’t run these again for a while.
This is in addition to HBO2 airing the first season on Saturday nights. Last week was episode 3.
Someone at work got me into this show, and I’m really enjoying it. There’s a lot of humor injected into the dramatic situations, and Bruce Dern and Harry Dean Stanton are always a good time.
Not to mention that it might be good to learn a little about LDS just in case… you know.
:barf:
Yeah, I like Big Love a lot. I feel so sorry for Bill Paxton in it. His mother’s a real trip, too.

Dear Washington Post and other pseudo-liberal media outlets,
I am so fed up with media midgets beating around the bush and refusing to report an entire news story. Aren’t facts more important than worrying about the right-wing blasting you for telling the truth?
The most recent example deals with reports about our dysfunctional Food and Drug Administration. Reports claim Congress is at fault for the catastrophic failures at the FDA. Continual budget and personnel cuts have left the FDA and many other federal government departments and agencies shattered shells of their former selves.
Who really is at fault? It isn’t a generic “Congress” that did this. This was done by a Republican Congress, a premeditated dismantling of our government and much of our society following the destructive programs put into action by Ronald Reagan, the third worst President in American history.
Congress didn’t cripple our government, Republicans did, and don’t ever forget that fact.
Safe …. Cheers All and I fed fire and Tea is Made….. and I need The Cardinal … ๐ ๐

I’m about to give Nellie a bath. :pup: :smack: I think she knows something is up. She is absolutely HORRIBLE to give a bath! I have the leash hooked around the soap dish ready to restrain her. I’ll have to get in the tub with her and stand over her, also. It’s like she’s on crack or PCP or something, she’s CRAZY! Here goes, wish me luck! ๐
Don’t taze her, Kp!

New live edition tomorrow AM, 11 East, 8 West. New link with some new options courtesy Fernando, once again, untested.
Stay warm and safe out there. Batten down those hatches.
Yeah, I wouldn’t think a tazer in the bath tub would be such a good idea :billcat: But I didn’t need it anyways, Nellie was pretty good because I was well prepared :pup: :fist:
Cool, new torture technique! Water-tazing! :omg:
Kristapea, I had to go out, so had to bring Dear Monster Danu with me. To Bathe Danu HaHaHAHaHa. Just take her out of vehicle and walk around. Major water and rain but I can at least stand, earlier and yesterday I darn near blew away. Danu is bigger than me and everyone, especially men adores her but NOT ONE BLOODY YOUNG MAN DARES TO WALK HER. I almost beg. {darn chicken littles.} I did!
Last time I had a dog, I would ‘wash’/de-flea her by throwing a stick into the sea and when she brought it back we would check her head for fleas crawling for dry land and then rinse off the salt water. Someone will probably tell me it was inappropriate.
Might not work in AZ.
I don’t think Nellie likes the water. She barely comes to me when I’m in the pool. Does salt water kill tics and fleas?
I don’t think it is a tic solution unless the animal is a long distance swimmer but fleas fled to high ground for an easy pickoff. I am guessing it would work freshwater as well.
I must have been stressed…since …..
I liked dogs and ocean.
