It’s nice not to have to go to work on a Monday. I have the place to myself today (not everybody here is off, I’m afraid), so, outside of taking the dog out to the park, I reckon I’ll just hang out and not do much of anything. Oh, I need to bake some cookies to leave out for Santa, too. Better get busy, I guess.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Peace on Earth.
On behalf of those of us who have to work today…
nah, it’s OK. I only have to work half a day, and then I’m out either to Best Buy (but only if I feel like it) or maybe the movies. Probably I’m Not There, since a bunch of new flicks open tomorrow, and it probably WON’T be there if I don’t see it today. Or maybe No Country For Old Men or Sweeney Todd.
Moronqueen (or should that be Mormonqueen?), that thing you posted last night scared the hell out of me. It’s bad enough that I had to live through Nixon once.

BTW FRED is ALPHA and hit * 10,000 * POSTS not 1,000 :smack:

Good morning. :joe: :joe:
Somehow we have all gotten to the morn of Christmas eve.
PJ, why don’t you leave Santa a beer. Just don’t give any to the reindeer, as they’re doing the driving.
Lincoln Karim has posted great photos of a young hawk playing in a puddle.

I have to wonder about the diet of an urban bird of prey.. In the wild they dine on rodents but unless there are mice on the roof tops it must be quite dangerous dodging the cabs and the trucks and the pedestrians. ๐ฎ
Management decided that we ( note thats not they) could take vacation this week and next if we desired to take time off otherwise it would be business as usual ( minus the Thursday morning meeting) Christmas and New years day are paid holidays however you always have that pesky cell phone that tells you that was just what you thought. :reaper: :reaper:
No one of us worker :bee: s I have talked with is investing very heavily in Christmas this year .. presents for the little ones but no high def TVs around here. :tap: :tap:
Most of the “employees” on this new engineering project are contractors so they get neither paid vacation or sick leave unless they have worked for the contractor more than a year which is almost impossible with this six month contract with an eight month vacation in between BS that is so much a part of the Bush admins “economy” :yuck: :crap:
I think management decided that since at the moment there are more of them than us it would create tension if they shut down for the last two weeks of the year and left them here working their A*s off. :tap:
Fred, we have roof rats here in Phx. I’ve seen them tight rope walking the telephone lines.
Kp, what the hell do expect if y’all have salad bars up there?

I decided screw Best Buy. They’re all too close to malls, which I assume are going to be packed full of the dregs of humanity. Hopefully Target has the Barry Manilow CD I’m tracking down for my mom.
It really is for my mom. Honest.
No movie today either. I have plenty to watch at home. Not to mention that tonight I’ll be observing my one and only holiday tradition: wrapping gifts while drinking beer and watching the Bad Santa DVD.
Did I mention that my ambition is to meet Lauren Graham while wearing a Santa suit? :hubba:
Fred, there are tons of fresh juicy pigeons in urban areas. In fact, there are cities that bring in hawks just to contain the pigeon population.
Very Ann-Margaret xmas

Fred, NYC is loaded with rats and pigeons and the hawks are good hunters. Two great horned owls have also taken up residence in Central park, so there must be plenty of prey. We’re also seeing peregrine falcons and other kinds of hawks. Last March I saw a bald eagle on the west side of Manhattan with a fish in his talons that he’d just caught in the Hudson River.

Great SF columnist Herb Caen called pigeons “rats with wings”.
Yes, Hawks are pigeons’ nemesis {pl nemeses – weird ๐ } — I was just thinking The Park Might be getting “crowded”.
In The City they had hawks or were going to start the “program” again …Have They? ….. A!I!V!

I think you mean Doc Paulin but I don’t think that he passed in Canuckistan.
George Bush says merry f***ing Christmas as he once again shows how much he loves jeebus.
The Bush administration yesterday eliminated about $700 million a year in Medicaid reimbursements to schools, sidestepping an attempt by Congress to block such a move.
The new rule, issued by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, is expected to save the federal government $3.6 billion over five years, transferring those costs to school districts.

Emission Nebula IC 1396
Credit & Copyright: Kent Wood
Explanation: Sprawling across hundreds of light-years, emission nebula IC 1396 mixes glowing cosmic gas and dark dust clouds. Stars are forming in this area, only about 3,000 light-years from Earth. This detailed view was created in light primarily emitted by hydrogen gas, recorded through a filter that narrowly transmits a wavelength characteristic of glowing hydrogen atoms in the nebula. Among the intriguing dark shapes within IC 1396, the winding Elephant’s Trunk nebula lies just left center. IC 1396 lies in the high and far off constellation of Cepheus.A!I!V!/|\ :santacool:
So everybody I know wants to do xmas eve but nothing tomorrow so I am thinking I am becoming Jewish and going to a movie and eating Chinese. I have my eyes on Walk Hard though I think Maron’s pick, No Country for Old Men, might be the season’s feel good flick.

Didn’t catch Ron Paul on Press the Meat yesterday, but apparently he doesn’t approve of Abe Lincoln one little bit.
I think I wanna go see Sweeney Todd. Johnny Depp with a white hot mean streak :hubba:
Druid, the City did try using falcons to chase the pigeons, with disasterous results. The falcons attacked someone’s dog (dog survived but the falcon program died.) The City is constantly poisoning rats and just a few weeks ago a councilmember from Brooklyn proposed fining people $1000. for feeding pigeons. The the council preznit said pigeons were flying rats. I have heard nothing since and I’m sure the idea has died a well deserved death.
PJ, I caught Ron Paul. He is quite a nut. He doesn’t believe in public schools, social security or taxes. He doesn’t support the Iraq war or the Civil war. He speaks vehemently against earmarks but made liberal use of them for his district.
He’d be a very interesting president.
This is a comment to a story about Giuliani taking heat for the radios that didnรขโฌโขt work on 9/11. I thought he/she captured the 9/11 debacle very succinctly:
I was a member of the NYPD on 9/11. We used digital Motorola radios issued sometime in the early 90’s. I can’t remember the exact year. I noticed firemen still carried the Motorola radios we carried when I joined the department in the early 80’s. I have no idea what Rudy’s role in the whole thing was if any at all. I never understood why Emergency Management was located at the WTC. It should have been located in one of the outer boroughs in a nondescript warehouse area. I said this before 9/11 and I’m no rocket scientist. I also never understood why the police and fire commissioners were reduced to being Rudy’s bodyguards on 9/11. It was idiotic. They had other duties. The fire commissioner had no previous fire department management experience and the police commissioner of America’s largest department was a high school drop out with zero police management experience. I personally knew numerous police executives inside the department with advanced degrees and years of police management experience who were passed over for Rudy’s buddy. Thank God his campaign is imploding.
