Did you watch the big debate last night? I didn’t. I don’t even know if it was on the teevee anywhere, though I reckon it probably was. Watched the SU/Georgetown game in HD off and on (whereas I’m not what you’d call a good sport, I occasionally need to change the channel when things aren’t going well, lest I throw a cat through the screen). In between, I watched some creepy movie with Reese Witherspoon and Marky Mark when they were both puppies, and after SU blew the game and lost by two in OT, I decided to call it a night, and drift off to some old time radio (Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar). And now I gotta go to freakin’ work. Not that I don’t love my job, as I may have mentioned once or twice, but it’s just that I hate having to leave the dog alone. Poor boy.

Much as I’m trying to avoid last night’s debate, they insist on showing clips on the lo-cal news. I have to say, no matter who you prefer as a candidate, Obama is pretty crappy at responding when shit gets tossed his way. I wish John Kerry had had a little but of Hillary in him.
And Edwards is by far the best – both in content and delivery. Maybe he’s full of shit – I don’t think so, personally – but what he at least claims to stand for comes closest to what I believe in .
A shame his candidacy has already been declared dead by all the smart, serious people.
Much of the debate was Clinton vs. Obama squabbling about various shit like either an old married couple or a pair of five-year-olds in the sandbox. Edwards came off like the voice of reason on the rare occasions when he could get a word in edgewise or when someone would remind Wolf Blitzer that it isn’t officially a two-person race. Yet.
Needless to say, no sign or mention of Kucinich, so I guess the media blackball is complete.
When did Joe Johns become so sleazy? I don’t remember him doing that sort of thing when he was a reporter at NBC. Maybe they didn’t give him the opportunity.
I think the best that can happen – which means it won’t – is both Clinton and Obama withdraw from the race. They are hurting the party and setting a tone the Democrats have tried to avoid since LBJ was a Senator! The best candidate running was Bill Richardson. He was the only one with federal administrative experience.
The real news is the world-wide economic meltdown happening right in front of us. The Reaganomics Endgame is upon us. Republican fiscal policy and welfare for the rich is crashing, a monetary Hindenberg in slow motion. Who brung da mashmellows?

Richardson has the best resume, but was unfortunately rather inarticulate (whenever I saw him, at least). Unfortunately, if you can’t articulate your vision on the teevee, you have a tough time getting elected in our system.
Of the remaining candidates, John Edwards is the only one addressing the real problems in the country. Well, until you use Clinton and Obama as examples and then we re-introduce two old problems we have never truly come to grips with – race and gender. Personally, I would like the Democrats to refocus on the class warfare the rethugs have been waging for generations.
CNN.com had a poll over the weekend – Do you select candidates on personality? Or something like that. About 85% said no. With some of the academic researched I saw back in the 80s and 90s the actually number is the opposite. Fifteen percent or less of voters select candidates on issues while 85-90% select wholly on personality. I think that has all changed in the last 15 years. Now the winners look like the candidate who can attack the fastest and dirtiest. Rethug campaign platforms appear built on fear and hate.
Looking closely at the world economic news this morning the problems are multiplying. And no one is talking about the real problems – exorbitant oil prices and a self-destructing credit market. Anyone care to throw in some real infation – especially in food – instead of the rethug regime’s made up numbers. Unemployment, too. The number of Americans actively looking for work is 3 times the unemployment rate. That number reports only those individuals lucky enough to collect unemployment insurance.

I think one of the reasons the rethugs have done so well, at least until now, is that their various coalitions coalesce around the nominee and support him. The Dems divergent groups are always looking for the perfect candidate and, as they never find him/her, they continue to undermine support for the nominee.
I am as old as the hills and I have always been politically involved. So far, the perfect candidate has not shown up at any level. And, even when I have found some very liberal soul to support, if that person wins (on the local level of course) lo and behold, once in office, he/she disappoints……usually big time.
So, I will enthusiastically support the Democratic nominee because I know the Rethug nominee will make things worse. He’ll continue the war, balance the budget on the backs of the poor, appoint stupid, prejudiced judges to the supreme court, weaken if not kill social security…….I could go on and on.
Forgive the morning rant.

Looks like the Federal Reserve lowered rates 3/4% with kills the yield on savings at least that much. That should add 3/8% or more to the inflation rate BEFORE more farmers switch to fuel corn instead of food crops. Corn is a “heavy feeder,” meaning it takes lots of petroleum-based fertilizers to produce successive crops from the same plot of land. Need lots of water, too. Here comes that ever-accelerating inflation spiral, especilly in the grocery stores.
