Those of us who live in one of the ‘Super Tuesday’ states and are eligible to vote in the primary will probably spend at least a little time this weekend trying to figure out how we’re going to vote. One place that might be useful to check out is ProgressivePunch, which has searchable rankings of how our representatives have voted. Of particular interest (given the candidates for prez) is their Senate rankings, which you can order by the current year’s votes, lifetime, and “chips are down” votes, which they described as
…votes where either progressives lost or where the progressive victory was narrow and could have been changed by a small group of Democrats voting differently. The definition of a vote where progressives lost is one where a majority of the progressive cohort (see list below) was on the losing side of the vote. Narrow progressive victories are defined as votes in which progressives won by 20 votes or fewer in the House (so a shift of 10 votes from one side to the other would have changed the result) or by 6 votes or fewer in the Senate (so a shift of 3 votes from one side to the other would have changed the result).
Absences by members of Congress are penalized in scoring only if the margin was <10 votes in the Senate or <20 votes in the House.
You can also drill down to look at votes on single issues, and they describe their methodology for how they do their rankings, so you can look for ways to dismiss the results when they don’t turn out the way you wanted them to.
For the current Congress, Barack Obama is ranked #43 in the Senate – slightly ahead of Joe Lieberman. Chuck Schumer, somewhat surprisingly, comes in at #5 – well ahead of ‘liberal lion’ Ted Kennedy who, at #28, is just ahead of #29, Hillary Clinton.
Teddy’s lifetime score is much better, of course, as he comes in at #7. Hillary’s tied with Pat Leahy at #17, and Obama is close by at #24.
When the chips are down, Schumer also comes in at #5, Clinton is all the way down to #30, and Obama, at #43, is two spots ahead of his Senate mentor, Joe Lieberman.
There are tons of ways to drill down on all the issues, and it’s pretty interesting (and a good Friday time-killer at work). Unfortunately, it hasn’t made me feel any better about the two choices I seem to have left in Tuesday’s primary. But they’re both a hell of a lot better than John McCain, who comes in at #84 for this Congress – and #59 lifetime.
Now, let’s get this crappy week over already.

This seems wise. I always stay the hell out of Tampa when the clown show comes to town. It’s like New Year’s Eve with twice the testosterone. I’m not sure I’m even going to watch the game this year, as I could give a shit who wins. (As long as the Patriots lose.)
PJ Congrats I guess re 2…. Now where is the explosion EMO? :bong: A!I!V! :pirate: :yippee: :pup: :rofl2: ๐

Well, the Giants’ coach played for Syracuse, as did their strength & conditioning coach, and they have a wide receiver/special teams guy who played here, too. That, combined with being sick and tired of the Patriots, means I’ll be pulling for the Gi’nts.
Feingold is #26? That doesn’t seem right. One would think he would be top ten at least. But most of the other rankings make sense, which disturbs me because I just sent Russ some money and now I’m wondering if I should re-direct future contributions. Time for further investigation, I guess.
Speaking of the Super Bowl, bad doggie!
I was pretty disappointed with Russ for attacking Edwards, saying his rhetoric didn’t match his voting record, while others in the primary had virtually the same voting record, but weren’t even talking about the things that Edwards was.

Super bowl ???? Whats that
Unfortunately, DirecTV doesn’t offer my local stations in HD, and I’m really not in the mood to climb on the roof and mount an antenna so that I can get them OTA (particularly since it would also mean pulling coax from the roof down to the basement). And, our local Fox affiliate is located due west of us – on the other side of a rather large hill more or less across the street from our house, so it’s unlikely even an antenna would work. That, combined with a certain amount of disdain in our household for the few things that I actually enjoy, will probably keep me from watching more than a few minutes of the game (which is on too damn late here in the east for me to go watch it at my sister’s house, where they enjoy such things, and then drive back home afterwards. Not on a school night, anyway).
The Super Bowl has long been much less about the game itself (few of them are actually good games), than it is about getting together with friends and family, and having a good time. I wish my dad was still around to watch it with, or that I still had some friends left in the area that could come over, eat a few wings and toss back a couple of cold frosties, and ostensibly watch the game while shooting the shit, laughing, hootin’ and hollerin’, and having some fun.
It’s pretty hard to have a good time when people not only aren’t even slightly interested, but actually think it’s stupid (and, by extension, that you’re stupid for being even slightly interested yourself – whether they come out and say it or not).
So, I can sit alone and try not to make any noise (lest I be ridiculed) while watching, or I can do something else (like go to bed early).
So, I guess Edwards is giving his delegates to Clinton??
Oops, the jobs number is out and it is (minus)-17,000.
But, CNBC analyst says it’s a good thing that wages have declined.
AFAIK, Edwards hasn’t thrown his support to any candidate, or released his delegates. Unless you saw something else somewhere?
No, I just heard someone from Edwards campaign on Bill Press;’ show and thought I heard him say something like that and i missed some of it.
Well, we’ll see, I guess. I find it doubtful though. He said when he dropped out that he got “reassurances” from both sides that they’d “make poverty a central theme of their campaigns and, if elected, their presidency.” My guess would be he won’t endorse either one until they actually do that.

You have to wonder, though. I mean, if he wants somebody who’ll fight for things when they’re elected, that might make him lean one way. If he wants somebody with the best chance of winning, that might be somebody else.
I just don’t know how to vote. Going with “electability” didn’t work out so hot last time.

That’s a good question PJ. Why did Kerry lay down and die in 2004? Did someone make him an offer he couldn’t refuse? Was he just a wuss? Did the DLC tell him to quit? Would Hillary or Obama buck the system? Doesn’t seem like they’ve done that yet. Yeah, I guess I’ll wait to see what Edwards does with his delegates.

Hiya, FK. Yep, wider and prettier crap. But, I must say, there’s also some different, HD-only crap, including the Smithsonian HD channel, and Dan Rather Reports, InFocus, and HDNet Reports on HDNet.
HD Reports and Rather are good. I haven’t found the smithsonian channel. Do you have to have worked there to get it?
I know why I think McCain is a dangerous nut, but why the hell do the wingnuts hate him so much? You’d think he’d be right up their alley.

They moved Smithsonian to a different package (HD Extra Pack) that you have to add for $5 a month (but you can get three months free). I think you need a real pit bull type for AG. HHS fits more with what Edwards seems to really care about. HHS (originally created as the Dept of Health, Education, and Welfare) deals with the country’s “human” concerns, and touches the lives of just about every American. It’s what I think is best about the government: people serving people. Its programs help everyone from newborns to the elderly, and everyone who needs health services. Given the right person to run it, and the backing of a president committed to it (and able to shake money out of Congress to fund it), it could be a major player in taking control from the corporations, and handing it back to We The People.

This just seems more terrible than usual.
I do not think Obama is more electable. I think both have a chance and given Hillary’s abililty as a politician, I think she has a good chance.
When Hillary ran for senate, the first time, she was given all the usual bad press. She won and she has done a decent job for NY. I think of our 2 senators, Schumer and Hillary, Hillary is the better one.
I did not like her vote for the war, but the fact that Obama made a speech against it before he was in the senate, does not impress me, for once he was in the senate he voted, as Hillary has, to fund it.
I do worry that Obama is going to be eaten alive by the Rethugs. Given that the NY Post endorsed him, our really right wingnut paper, I assume they think so too.
However, I will enthusiastically support the Democratic candidate ’cause he/she will be light years better than any Republican.
And, kudos to the Dems for giving us a choice between and woman and a black man. That is really an accomplishment.

Normally I don’t have much use for this guy, but I gotta admit that the concept of a female chain gang is kinda :hot: :hot: :hubba:
Vietnam ended mostly because the soldiers refused to fight anymore. I don’t think violence helped the civil rights movement all that much either. It had a certain affect, to be sure, but I think it had a lot more to do with the white folks who weren’t rabid racists being ashamed of seeing peaceful folks being attacked by dogs and water cannons, and having children blown up in churches.
Violence is a short-term ‘feel good’ (if you’re not the one getting beaten, shot, or blown up) – and, dare I say, cowardly – approach. Non-violence takes a lot more guts.
Yes, yes, I know. You think violence and murder are the answer. I think that just leads to the most violent and best armed people running the show.
But, each to his or her own.
Barack Obama’s presidential campaign is mailing out a flyer attacking Hillary Clinton’s healthcare plan in ways that recall infamous advertisements from the health insurance industry launched against her previous ill-fated universal healthcare effort.

Did anyone see Baghdad Hospital: Inside the Red Zone? It was on that teevee thing that some folks have so much disdain for – on HBO. It was filmed by an Iraqi doctor, in the hospital, ambulances, neighborhoods. It shows how glorious violence is.
Congress stopped funding the war because the soldiers stopped fighting it. See Sir! No Sir! some time.
Fred, the only way that we get healthcare without paying is single payer, which of course we would pay for with taxes. Mandating insurance is the only way, at the moment, to spread the cost and make it more affordable.
Supposedly, there are subsidies to pay for the insurance if people are poor. But, if it’s not mandated what would stop people from not buying it until they are ill?
We mandate car insurance, flood insurance and the bank that holds your mortgage mandates house insurance.
Not a perfect solution but much better than the present plan.
Even Obama’s plan would penalize people who wait until they’re sick to buy insurance. Neither of their plans are what I would want. There needs to be single-payer government provided Medicare style healthcare. Oh, and guess what? You’d be ‘required’ to pay into it via your taxes – just like you’re required to pay into the highway system, NASA, and, yeah, the invasion and occupation of Iraq.

My Friends, I think that gov’t run not for profit single payer is where we need to end up but no one is quantifying exactly what health care is costing everyone now and how much would be saved if we headed in that direction.
If they want to leave private in the mix if someone wants it, so be it. There still needs to be something for everyone option and the start would be to just extend Medicare to anyone who so chooses.
Is it any coincidence that one of bush’s budget targets is gov’t medical care for a number of insidious reasons?
