So, the Serbs appear to be pretty pissed off at us over this Kosovo independence thing. Yeah, well, take a number. There are a lot of people ahead of you. Leave us the hell alone, or we’ll shoot you satellites down. Assuming you have a couple. Fuck it. We’ll give you some, and then shoot ’em down.
Didn’t watch the great debate last night; having a hard time giving a shit. I don’t know how I’ll make it through ’til November. Especially if they keep making me think about old white men having sex. As if Grampa Fred and Guidi Ruliani weren’t bad enough, now they have to give me visions of a John McCain sex scandal. Bleh.
But, I reckon Clinton said something or other that got all the Obamites up in arms and whining. They really should just give it up, and start going after McCain. I’d treat Clinton as more or less insignificant at this point (much in the same way that Congress should all but ignore Bush at this point, and his petulant little temper tantrums). Clinton is done, so it’s time to move on (this will be a fun post to throw back in my face if there’s a miraculous Clinton comeback in the next few weeks).
Speaking of moving on, time to move on and get this week over with. See ya
For those of you who missed the debate, here are the few points of interest:
1) Hillary is officially out of gas. The “xerox” comment proves this. No one outside the Beltway cares about Obama and Deval Patrick comparing notes. If this is all she has to work with, she’s toast unless someone has pix of Obama fondling a boy or a goat. Or a lobbyist.
2) Speaking of lobbyists, both of them wisely laid off (so to speak) the McCain story.
3) Campbell Brown hosting was a train wreck. If this is the best she can do keeping Obama and Clinton under control, heaven help her when CNN gives her a show and she has to deal with the right-wing screamers her bookers will dig up.
4) Downside of the debate not being on MSNBC: no KO. Upside: no Tweety.
On to Ohio next Tuesday.
:joe: :joe: :joe: :joe: :joe: 😮 :yuck: :crap: :paranoid: 😯 😯
❓ ❓ ❓ Whatever :sheep: le
The debate was OK. Clinton made a really stupid remark about plagiarizing, making the xeroxing remark that Kevin mentioned. They talked about mandates for health care and Barack tried to soft pedal his lack of them (I assume John Edwards has had an influence) and Clinton did a super job of closing sayng that whatever she goes through on the campaign trail is naught in comparison to what others go through such as injured soldiers etc. She said whatever happened she and Barack would be OK and that she was truly honored to be on he stage with him.
It snowed, last night and it’s still snowing The dogs are thrilled. They love snow. They like to roll in it and push it up with their noses. and, of course, they enjoy turning a bit of it yellow.
This is the first snow that hasn’t immediately turned to sleet and hail and freezing rain and plain ol’ rain, making a slushy, dirty mess that even the dogs don’t love. And, believe me, the dogs love some really awful stuff.
Have a good Friday. I’m on to my second :joe:
But when McCain huddled with his closest advisers at his rustic Arizona cabin last weekend to map out his presidential campaign, virtually every one was part of the Washington lobbying culture he has long decried. His campaign manager, Rick Davis, co-founded a lobbying firm whose clients have included Verizon and SBC Telecommunications. His chief political adviser, Charles R. Black Jr., is chairman of one of Washington’s lobbying powerhouses, BKSH and Associates, which has represented AT&T, Alcoa, JPMorgan and U.S. Airways.
Senior advisers Steve Schmidt and Mark McKinnon work for firms that have lobbied for Land O’ Lakes, UST Public Affairs, Dell and Fannie Mae

Sounds like McCain has a wide stance on lobbyists.
FEC McCain!
But McCain’s attempts to build up his campaign coffers before a general election contest appeared to be threatened by the stern warning yesterday from Federal Election Commission Chairman David M. Mason, a Republican. Mason notified McCain that the commission had not granted his Feb. 6 request to withdraw from the presidential public financing system.
The implications of that could be dramatic. Last year, when McCain’s campaign was starved for cash, he applied to join the financing system to gain access to millions of dollars in federal matching money. He was also permitted to use his FEC certification to bypass the time-consuming process of gathering signatures to get his name on the ballot in several states, including Ohio.
Oh, my!
WASHINGTON — Republican front-runner John McCain accused Barack Obama on Wednesday of waffling on a pledge to accept public financing for the fall presidential campaign.
Wow. Did you look at any of the comments on that story? The mouthbreathers most love teh USA Today.
I’d like to see both Barack and McCain accept public financing but, if McCain is making a issue of it, he’s worried about money for his own campaign. Poor little Rethug.
McCain wanted it for the primaries when he had no money until he found his footing but he wants it in the general because Dem $s are kicking ass this year. The FEC situation is also rotten since it really cannot do anything with only a third of the commissioners in place. I think maybe both parties are happy to have it that way for now. Easier to pay fines later than play by the rules during the election. Now if the FEC could invalidate elections for violations…
Preznit Boogie :dancers:
You don’t see this in NOLa.
What would be funny is if the FEC tells John-boy he can’t opt of public financing until August, and the Democratic nominee says, fine, I’ll accept public financing for the general, but between now and then, I’m gonna kick your ass all over the teevee.
Yay! My email got read on Steph’s show! :yippee:
Wow, this guy singing on Jeff’s show from yesterday is pretty annoying. Or maybe I’m just not in the mood.
pj, funny and SWEET. I like Obama’s odds with a level playing field in the general. Of course the 527’s will be blazing.
How much crap can be out there on McCain? I can’t imagine they can come even close against Obama.
Oh, yeah, that guy annoyed me too.
I use words for a living. Others even Professors and Students judging — they Judged students and even Professors which then were suspended or FAILED from school … To Teach One Not to Use Other’s WORDS………
But, if you are Obama you can break the laws and EVERYONE whines and screams, “But it is okay to PLAGIARIS(Z)E.” Amazing University Professors and Students which stood up AGAINST PLAGIARISM…Where Are They NOW? Sad thing is……
I WOULD BE OSTRACIZ(S)E…..But all of you are standing for Obama to break the LAW!… ENOUGH WITH LIES ❗ A!I!V!
Well, politicians give speeches that other people write all the time (in whole or in part), without attribution. Is that plagiarism? I mean, you don’t think the Chimp writes his own material, do you? Even Jeb Bartlett had Sam Seaborn and Will Bailey (oh, and Toby Ziegler, too).
What about last night, when Clinton said:
“You know, the hits I’ve taken in life are nothing compared to what goes on every single day in the lives of people across our country.”
Which seems very close to what Bill Clinton said in 1992:
“The hits that I took in this election are nothing compared to the hits the people of this state and this country have been taking for a long time.”
Ready to lead from Day One?
pj, I always love the comments when I drill down that far. Of course, I am spoiled a little.
Who first said “My friends, …”?
As I said the other day, I really think that Clinton built her campaign around being able to respond fiercely to all the attacks she knew she’d get from the Republicans, and just didn’t figure on running into this Obama thing (I hesitate to use the word ‘cult,’ since it has a bad connotation, but he really has engendered an extremely fierce core of supporters). The more the Clinton machine tried to do what it had been designed to do, the worse things got for her.
And her persona has been so well defined by the Republicans and the media (quite unfairly, I think), that she had the near impossible task of trying to remake her image after everyone felt they already knew her.
Yay! My email got read on Steph’s show!

I can’t get her podcasts for free, so I guess I’ll never hear it. 😥
PJ Well, politicians give speeches that other people write all the time (in whole or in part), without attribution. Is that plagiarism?
YES! Even in High School, then again at ‘SC we were given many days of studies AGAINST Plagiaism … IN ENGLISH CLASSES, MEDIA CLASSES, IN THEATRE & PLAY WRITING…”For What’s It’s Worth”…..by BS
“He is a republican in DEMs clothing.” My Words! And I HAVE NEVER VOTED REPUBLICAN. A!I!V!
MY ART CLASSES at ‘SC was the ONLY PLACE I DID NOT DEAL
with plagiarism, we “drew”…..but we dealt with Art thieves (a wee bit). A!I!V!
Well, I had to deal with proper sourcing myself. In fact, it’s a lot tougher to get away with anything these days, because my school (and every other now, I’m sure) had a subscription to a service called turnitin, which checks your work against a ton of databases, the Internet, you name it, and flags every single thing that even comes close to matching. Can’t get away with anything.
As for Obama using a line or two from that a supporter of his said he could use, well, I suppose that might technically be considered plagiarism on some level, but I really don’t think that rises to the level of a criminal offense. Just my 2 cents, of course.
As for Obama being a Republican, well, that could be. Many would say that about Clinton, too (actually, both the Clintons; I’ve always said that Bill Clinton was the best Republican president we’ve ever had – at least in my lifetime). Either are much better than McCain, though. At least I hope so. I’ve decided to just hope that things will work out for the best. My big concern is McCain getting elected, because I think he’d be worse than Bush.
Does anyone here have an idea how I can get my Ipod nano to update? I cleaned my PC ‘history’ up this morning and now I can’t download the new malloy. I backdated my computer 24 hours to see if that would help- no dice. USB connection is okay, shows that it’s powering the ‘pod but it just won’t update. I tried downloading itunes7.1 on upstairs computer (didn’t want to screw this one up) but stiill no dice 😯
Beats me, Art. I take it that you have to go through iTunes for everything? A shame. I use Juice, personally. Or just download directly.
Regretfully yes. It was a christmas present a few years ago. I didn’t know any better. Now, I’ve got so much invested in itunes- it’s like being addicted to musical crack :tap:
Trying to make using a riff from a campaign co-chair/friend/ally/advisor in a speech into a crime and a disqualifiable offense seems to be a little hollow and a lot desperate.
I heard this morning so clips of HRC ‘plagiarizing’ her own husband and gwb.
I wish that Biden had been a little more aggressive in defending himself in 1988 when he failed to attribute Neil Kinnock in 1 speech of many and was wiped out of that campaign but that was an era when there was still some sense of honour and shame.
Attribution and reference are important but not so regarded in this day of intertubes and samples and YouTubes.
This Obama thing is just BS distraction. If that’s the best they can come up with, in the words of the Soup Nazi, “NEXT!‘”.
I can’t believe Hillary even brought it up again. There were several youtube videos comparing her words with Edwards within a few hours after she made the first “charge” against ‘bama :jerk:
Ah, well, that was an ‘homage.’
artno’
Do you auto synch or manual in iTunes?
You can still get content from other sources and put in an iPod. I never use the iTunes store but fill 2 iPods.
It’s auto-sync. I know I could try erasing it and start all over but I did that a few days after I got it and it was a nightmare getting it reloaded. The main problem is that that Itunes isn’t recognizing it- not on this computer or the other one… but by all accounts the battery is good and makes a good connection to the computer….
and most of my music is stuff I’ve bought on Itunes which won’t play unless on a ipod 😮
:jerk: isn’t gender specific is it? :omg:
This iTunes thingie seems overly complicated to me.
If the methodology used by Clindork against Obama is the same methodology she developed for responding to rethug attacks ,, She should be happy there have not been any rethugs attacks so far.. I listened to the debate, yesterday, specifically to hear Obama. I voted for Clinton because I thought she would do better on healthcare, and is more mature than Barack, a qulaity that I believe comes in handy when dealing with complicated issues.
But, if trends continue, Barack will be our candidate and I want to support him because I’ve learned about Rethugs. The Dems are far, far from ideal but they’re much much better than the Rethugs.
With that said, Barack is an acceptable candidate and if he is the nominee, I will support him.

Democratic Death Wish
By Larry Johnson on February 5, 2008 at 9:40 PM in Current Affairs
Save this post. I will be telling you, “see, I told you so†or you will be feeding me a healthy helping of crow. But I am confident it will be, “I told you so.â€If Democrats choose Obama they are signing the death warrant for their party’s presidential aspirations in November. Normally, given the Bush record of the last eight years, Republicans in general would not have a snowball’s chance in a blast furnace of winning in November. But this year will not be normal. The virtual lack of national scrutiny to Obama’s record and the media adulation for his bullshit “change†mantra will come to a screeching halt. When it does, expect the following:BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA, BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA.
Unless he sets up shop in St. Patrick’s Cathedral, he’ll have a tough time shedding the label that he’s a muslim (even though he isn’t). Although, as the media starts looking at his father’s side of the family in Kenya they will find practicing muslims and a relationship with the Kenyan opposition leader, who also happens to be a muslim. That could have been a heartwarming story except cousin Odinga is in the middle of an ethnic/tribal war pitting Luo against Kikuyu and muslim against christian. Not so sweet. If fighting in Kenya continues to escalate it won’t be the inspirational backstory Barack may have counted on.
Then there is the fairy tale fantasy about Obama opposing lobbyists. He’s against them unless they represent the nuclear industry in his state and then he will take their money. And that is just for starters. I don’t begrudge Obama taking money from lobbyists. It is how Washington works. But he is so disingenuous and sanctimonious. Just wait till the national media starts sorting through his past record of contributors. The shine will come off. They love going after preachers who decry homosexuals and then score a hummer from a male hooker.
Oh yeah. Look for the Patrick Fitzgerald backlash. Most Democrats have lauded Mr. Fitzgerald for hauling Scooter Libby in for perjury and obstruction of justice. But will Democrats be singing with similar gusto come end of March as Mr. Fitzgerald builds a case against Obama’s key financial backer, Tony Rezko? I fully suspect that Dems, angry over the legal assault on Obama at that time, will be hollering for Fitzgerald’s head. Fitzgerald has integrity but that will count for little when you are perceived as crucifying the black Jesus.
The real crock of shit is the praise of Obama’s brilliance. There is not a “there†there. That is the point of Susan’s piece below, challenging his backers to tote up the list of “accomplishments.â€It would be one thing if he was getting busted up on a daily basis by Hillary. No way. Many of the Dems are such a bunch of whining pussies that any effort to challenge Barack on anything of substance was batted down as “gutter†politics. Jesus Christ!!
I would be prepared to make the case that Obama can resist the shit storm that will hit him in a few months if he had in fact conducted an effective defense of himself this last month and a half. But that has not happened. The Obama supporters, with the enthusiastic support of the mainstream media, are enabling the Senator. (…continued…)

Druid, it just seems that you’re more outraged by Obama’s ‘plagiarism’ than you are Clinton’s. Or perhaps I’m just not understanding you (sometimes I’m kind of think as a brick©).
Plagiarism is ONLY one of MANY WRONGS which OBAMA DID — see above FOR ONLY A FEW. Debate the other issues…whenever since I also have to work at same time. … :fist: A!I!V!
BTW, if anybody wants to see Deval Patrick and Obama side by side (or, rather, one after the other) with the ‘lifted’ words, it’s on YouTube here. Sort of ironic that most of the words in question are actually the words of others in the first place.
There are many things I’m uncomfortable about as far as Obama is concerned. The Scalito thing has been mentioned many times. His giving a platform to the homophobic preacher dude is another. I wasn’t especially thrilled to see him say he’d been ‘praising Jesus for 20 years’ (or whatever it was exactly he said), either.
Then again, Clinton has felt obliged to pander to the Jesus crowd, too. I was extremely disappointed with her vote to authorize dummy to invade Iraq, and (even worse, because it was so recent) her vote in favor of Kyl/Lieberman on Iran.
I think both of their healthcare plans are boons to the insurance companies.
But I looked at their voting records and their positions on things, and find them to be nearly identical.
I must say, I don’t feel the hatred and animosity toward either of them that I’ve seen from others. I’d have been much happier with Edwards, personally (and have read the comments of a lot people out there in the blogs that are filled with spite and contempt for him as well). I don’t feel particularly filled with great joyousness at the prospect of either one of them, really.
But relative to McCain? No sweat. I’ll take either one in a heartbeat.
Then again, there’s always Ralph.
Heh. This is interesting. I guess Obama told a story about an Army captain in Afghanistan last night. The wingnuts are up in arms over it, so this ABC reporter gets the captain’s information and contacts him, and the story checks out.
Of course, judging by the wingnut commenters (who really ought to be enlisting, oughtn’t they?), they don’t give a shit whether it’s true or not.
It’s all just about perception- Obama praised for being progressive Dem leader

Obama Deregularized — after “sleeping” with lobbyists with the Nuclear Power Industry — the Nuclear Regularizations. Still trying to decide if I want to dial up the debate and watch it or just rely on the post mortems. It seems both candidates acquitted themselves well except for the stupid xerox moment. I think HRC might be slowly bowing out gracefully. Somehow I find that hard to believe but I hope it’s true.

Arizona Congressman Is Indicted (warning-NY Times content but not The Nation)
Everybody falling on their swords to cover for McCain?
Got it, art. Had to run out. Sounds like a big storm is brewing.
Renzi, the newly indicted congressman from Arizona:
Renzi also is a co-chairman of Republican presidential candidate John McCain’s Arizona leadership team. And the Arizona Senator aided Renzi’s re-election bid.

Do you think Mother McCain told Johnny there’d be days like this?
Rick Renzi, a name that almost sounds unreal. Is he too old for American Idol?
The Justice Department announced it has launched an investigation into who authorized the use of waterboarding at the department, following a request from Democratic Sens. Richard J. Durbin of Illinois and Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island.
After the two sent the DOJ a letter asking who authorized the use of the controversial interrogation technique, H. Marshall Jarrett, the head of DOJ’s Office of Professional Responsibility, wrote the senators that this issue is “included in a pending OPR investigation into the circumstances surrounding the drafting†of a 2002 Office of Legal Counsel memo on interrogation standards.

OK …I have located a pile of copies of Walt Crowley’s Rites of Passage at University Bookstore in Seattle on the remainder table for $8.95 hardcover. On page 178 there is a picture of Roxie. Oh and a cat…anybody want me to snatch a copy for them? I have one for you vernon…
As far as I know, Obama didn’t deregularize the nuclear regulations after sleeping with lobbyists from the nuclear industry.
What actually happened was that his constituents complained to him about a spill at a nuke plant – operated by a company named Exelon – in his district. This induced him to introduce legislation that would force nuke plant operators to report any spill or release, no matter how minor.
However, he allowed this legislation to be gutted in order to get it out of committee, and the final bill amounted to no more than a suggestion that nuke plant operators would maybe sorta kinda – if they felt like it – report spills.
Additionally, Obama receives more donations than any other candidate from the nuclear industry, and his chief campaign strategist – David Axelrod – was a consultant to Exelon.
So there are a lot of concerns there, to be sure. I just think it’s best to be accurate, as much as possible.
It should also be noted that Mark Penn’s (he’s Clinton’s chief campaign strategist) company Burson Marsteller was also a consultant for Exelon.
Oh, and Clinton was a co-sponsor of Obama’s radioactive-leaks bill.
That’s great, sblue. The online version is missing pages and that is one of them. I read some of what was there and obviously Roxie appears a number of times. I would have loved to have heard what she had to say about those days. I was going to look it up at Powell’s. I look forward to seeing the book.
University Bookstore used to be an account of ours.
Thanks.
BTW, at least according to ‘on the issues,’ Obama’s position on nuclear power is that it’s “ok if we safeguard against waste & terrorism,” while Clinton is “[a]gnostic about nuclear power until waste & cost issue solved.” Both are opposed to Yucca Mountain.

This is pretty great. Today’s Washington Post piece all about the fact that John McCain is surrounded by lobbyists on his campaign has gotten lots of attention today. It’s key context for understanding the big Times story yesterday about his allegedly improper relationship with that female lobbyist, as well as his constant railing against lobbyists and “special interests.”
But the piece has a lovely and very revealing little nugget buried in it that has passed unnoticed. It turns out that one of McCain’s top advisers, lobbyist Charlie Black, does lots of his lobbying from the Straight Talk Express. From aboard the bus itself…
http://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/02/top_mccain_adviser_says_he_doe.php
Who do you think will be more responsive if there is a bona fide resistance to nucular power in the US?
McCain?
Hillary?
Obama (Obomba)?
I know my answer.
I get disgusted every time I see Charlie Black, for years now. Just seems like one nasty repug f***.
I think Clinton and Obama are about the same. Frankly, if we want to get off the oil, we need to either put a lot of money into alternative energy, go with the nukes, or – god forbid – reduce what we use. There are compelling reasons to go with the nukes. Unfortunately, in a “for profit” world, nukes are just too damn dangerous.
But, really, it’s Obama v. McCain at this point, barring some huge change. He’s the people’s choice, for better or worse.
Will privatization ever become an issue?
Only if Obama continues to accept the Republican frame on Social Security.
