Junior is off to visit his kinfolk in Minnesota today. That means leaving from either Rochester or Buffalo (Buffalo, I think; flights from Syracuse are ridiculously expensive), so Granny got up in the middle of the night to pick him up and take him there. So I reckon that means I have most of the day to myself, since even when she gets back, I suppose she’ll probably want to take a nap. So I guess I should probably get some quality time with the XBox.
In other news, for some reason I started wondering if Monty Hall is still alive. Happily, he is. And so is Carol Merrill (I think they both look pretty damn good, too; they’re not exactly spring chickens, though Monty’s about 20 years older than Carol, so I give him the “best preserved” award).
Sadly, Jay Stewart passed away in 1989. A sad story, that. His daughter committed suicide in 1981, and apparently Jay – despite finding Jesus and getting tight with Pat Robertson – never got over it. He hit the bottle pretty hard, and wound up shooting himself in his car park. 🙁 You folks of a certain age will know who I mean. You younger folks, I envy. I wish I was too young to know who Jay Stewart was.
Have a good day.

I’m old but I don’t know who Jay Stewart is (?)
Jay Stewart was the announcer/assistant dude on Let’s Make a Deal (he’d bring down the boxes or whatever, and Monty would say, “do you want $100, or what’s in the box?”
pj- if you had one day to hang-out in/around Rochester, the Finger Lakes, Erie Canal, etc- what would you do. Oh, and did I add- cheap?
Or would you just go for the wine-tasting? :alc:

I think I’d probably head down to Letchworth State Park (aka, the Grand Canyon of the East). I’m also pretty partial to wine country, and there are some nice vineyards to visit in the Finger Lakes region.
A federal judge has restored endangered species protections for gray wolves in the Northern Rockies, derailing plans by three states to hold public wolf hunts this fall.
U.S. District Judge Donald Molloy granted a preliminary injunction late Friday restoring the protections for the wolves in Montana, Wyoming and Idaho. Molloy will eventually decide whether the injunction should be permanent.
The region has an estimated 2,000 gray wolves. They were removed from the endangered species list in March, following a decade-long restoration effor

CNN is fact checking political ads so of course they started with Obama. They took issue with his claim that he worked his way through college because the campaign only gave them 2 jobs that he had held during the summer. I can’t wait to hear what they say about the
forked tonguestraight talker.Just before Santa Clara County immigrants were sworn in as U.S. citizens, they got voter-registration cards and were shown how to fill them out. At the conclusion of the naturalization ceremony, most new citizens had signed the cards and handed them in to become registered voters.
But in March, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services declared that the county registrar of voters must not hand out those cards until the recipients are officially citizens. And now voter registration has plunged by 82 percent.
snip.
The impact was definitive: The county registered 3,140 new voters at naturalization ceremonies in the four months before the new policy
The new policy by the agency, an arm of the Department of Homeland Security, has caused outrage among local League of Women Voters volunteers as well as local congressional representatives.
“Homeland Security has no jurisdiction over this. They can’t limit voter registration,” said U.S. Rep. Zoe Lofgren, D-San Jose, chairwoman of the House Judiciary immigration subcommittee. “Who do they think they are?”
Some are concerned that the new policy is an attempt to suppress voter participation by new citizens

Is it possible that Bushco wold want to surpress the vote? Surely this was a matter of national security….for Repubicans.

And it is a VERY long ride to/from Rochester in the :hot: :hot: . The Boy got to Minneapolis OK, though, and I don’t have to make the airport run again until the week after next.
Well, I see the arrogant old fart stepped down from the Straight Jacket Express for the moment. He’ll probably end up somewhere else in McSame’s campaign if he hasn’t already. These people are 👿
And what the heck is up with all these crane collapses 😮 😮 :omg: ??? I guess they are not confined to just NYC. Just one more thing to be afraid of :tinfoil:
We had a crane collapse here in Syracuse back in 1997 where the crane landed squarely on top of a car and miraculously, the person inside was unhurt. :omg: It was a miracle that no one was seriously hurt or killed in that accident. The angels were watching out for lots of people that day
I hope the link works — I got it from the newspaper archives through the public library website.

M16 and the Eagle Nebula
Credit & Copyright: Johannes Schedler (Panther Observatory)
Explanation: Young star cluster M16 is surrounded by natal clouds of cosmic dust and glowing gas also known as The Eagle Nebula. This beautifully detailed image of the region includes fantastic shapes made famous in well-known Hubble Space Telescope close-ups of the starforming complex. Described as elephant trunks or Pillars of Creation, dense, dusty columns rising near the center are light-years in length but are gravitationally contracting to form stars. Energetic radiation from the cluster stars erodes material near the tips, eventually exposing the embedded new stars. Extending from the upper left edge of the nebula is another dusty starforming column known as the Fairy of Eagle Nebula. M16 and the Eagle Nebula lie about 7,000 light-years away, an easy target for binoculars or small telescopes in a nebula rich part of the sky toward the split constellation Serpens Cauda (the tail of the snake).

Humid but not too hot today in Minnesota. Overall, not very hot this summer.
Ghouliani’s campaign for president of 9/11 left him with $3 million in debt, diminished his earning ability (I guess no one wants to hear his 9/11 speech or hire his consulting company) and a smaller political presence. So, he’s launched a drive to raise money for NYS Rethugs, as a way to regain influence. I suspect he also needs an excuse to get out of the house and away from Judi.

Too bad about Phil Gramm getting canned. I hope he’s not whining about it, because no one likes whiners. Right, Phil?

As Reuters reported earlier today, Iraqi Prime Minister al-Maliki has voiced his support for Obama’s withdrawal plan. Needless to say, such support is not a PR victory for the Bush administration. And so it was no doubt embarrassing when, according to ABC’s Jake Tapper, the White House sent the article–accidentally–to reporters
