Ah, thanks to Melina and Vernon for giving me three days in a row off from trying to think of something interesting to say. You might think that would mean I’d be able to jump in with something witty and charming today. You would, of course, be wrong.
Among all the other things that went on this week, you may or may not have noticed the launch of Cuil (pronounced “cool”). It’s an attempt by a bunch of ex-Google engineers to “out-Google” Google. They had a pretty successful pre-launch marketing campaign, I guess. So successful that the site crashed and burned when reviewers and other curious folks went to the site to see how it matched up to the other search sites out there.
I have my own methods for testing search sites, so I set out to evaluate Cuil. Up first, the weaselface wallace test. Search for that at Google, and you get, well, this site first, and then links to other sites where people apparently posted Booblehead threads to other blogs and whatnot (rather flattering, actually). Search at Cuil, and you get, well, it says 32 hits, but it only provides one, which appaears to be a rip-off of the 6/18/07 booblehead thread, but when you click the link, it’s to a domain that’s not longer active. Not terribly impressive.
Next, I tried a search for ‘cokie “the hag” roberts’ on both sites. Google returned about 350 hits (we came in numbers 2 and 3). Cuil?
No results were found for: cokie “the hag” roberts
OK. So maybe Cuil doesn’t do subtle. I figured I’d try something obvious: morning seditionists.
Google returned 9,270 results, with us (as you’d expect) at the top of the list. Cuil found 2,125 results, with lots of sites linking to ours, but, alas, didn’t actually return the site itself.
So, while I certainly think that competition is a good thing, I am quite sad to report that Cuil is not all that cool. In fact “cuil” returned over 2.5 million results at Google and less than 125,00 results from Cuil, while “google” gets 517 million results returned at Cuil, and over 2.7 billion (with a “b”) at Google.
For now, Cuil fails to get our seal of approval, and Google remains the Morning Seditionists’ official unofficial search engine.
Enjoy your Saturday.
Mornin’. We have finally made it out to Shelter Island after a rather harrowing 2 months, one of which hubby spent in the hospital and the next recovering with many visits to doctors.
Hubby contracted MRSA, a drug resistant staph infection usually gotten IN the hospital. In fact, it is very likely that is where he picked it up.
The MRSA is vanquished, thank goodness, but things are not completely back to narmal, although they are definitely moving in that direction.
I did get a very good look at life in a hospital and it is awful. The nurses work 12 hour shifts, which they like because they get 4 days off for every 3 they work. But, there is a dearth of older nurses, probably because one has to be young to stand on one’s feet for 12 hours. Young nurses are very enthusiastic and many were lovely, bright and helpful. But, there is a wisdom that comes with age and experience that they cannot replace. How RG does it is amazing.
The doctors are mostly interns. They may be good at “book learnin’ ” but they are not ready to be in charge of patient care. They made so many truly stupid decisions. At one point I noticed that Hubby’s eyes were red and it looked like pinkeye to me. I pointed this out to the intern and he wanted to treat it with saline, saying they were bloodshot. I, stupid school teacher, had to point out that his eyelashes were wet and it looked like infection. Eventually, they treated that eye with antibiotics but the other eye, also red, they treated with saline. That eye has lost some sight and while it is getting better we don’t know how much better it will get.
Medicine for profit, DOES NOT WORK. There are too many stories to bore you with here, but that is the clearest lesson. When earning money is the first priority, such things as patient care must necessarily take a back seat.
I see Maron got the credit for your Bardsmanship at talkingradio.com PJ.
I’m glad your hubby is better Sue, finest healthcare in the world my ass!
Saturday
Do any of our Minny members listen to this station? I think it is a creation of MPR and someone I used to work with is involved. Granted a lot of the axis of evil of the music biz (Best Buy, Musicland, Target) are/were HQ’d in Minny but there are some great music people there. One of my favorites, Bob Feldman, started Red House Records and had an untimely death a few years ago. but his label lives on.
Eliza’s dad wrote this. Don’t tell Colbear.
SouP, glad the hubby is getting better. Hadn’t heard much about the early morning animal patrols of late.
SueP,
I’m so sorry to hear about hubby’s health problems & the mis-adventure in :reaper: :slap: Hospital Land :slap: :reaper: . Your observations are spot-on and, yes, the doctors are kids. Once you get to be our age, everyone starts looking like a kid, except for your own parents if they are still around.
I really have to force myself to address these kids as “Doctor” instead of “Look here, Sonny” or “Dr. Skippy”. They have a lot of responsibility and are trying to learn a ton of stuff and it disconnects them from the reality of the people they are “treating”. And it is very difficult to get them to LISTEN to patients & their families. :fustrate: :fustrate:
This “health” care system is a mess. Everything is way more complicated than it has to be and good intentions & healing get lost inthe bog of scientific protocols and payer constrictions and governmental regulations. :jason: I’m planning to be outta there and doing something else by the end of the year. Hospitals are, sadly 🙁 , more toxic than healing :paranoid: . But they do need to be there, otherwise we’d be tripping over bodies in the streets and that may yet happen as Medicare & Medicaid pay for less & less & less every day.
Oh, I am sorry to cast a dark cloud on the day. Just stay out of Hospitals, :sheep: le, and keep your immune systems strong!!
Have a good weekend y’all :boobs:
Taped yesterday’s Obama town hall in St Pete but haven’t had a chance to watch it yet. The “hecklers” were a local group, the ones I expected it would be as soon as I heard about it.
Based on the clip I saw on the local news, I suspect the amount of “heckling” was overblown in the press, but I’m withholding judgement until I see the whole thing. Just like a good journalist! Remember when we used to have those?
Now apparently you inherit the throne. See Luke Russert.
Kevin, I watched a lot of town hall yesterday on ustream, mostly the q&a and there did not seem to be a major heckling problem. BHO is just so smooth anyway that he doesn’t seem to get fazed.
I would love to see him dismantling mkkane but I understand him not wanting to give him a free platform at this point. Rather give him enough rope to hang himself trying to lead his lynch mob…
Late breaking…

A word from a MARINE who just saw barack obama in the middle east
Hello everyone,
As you know I am not a very political person..
I just wanted to pass along that Senator Obama came to Bagram Afghanistan for about an hour on his
visit to ‘The War Zone’. I wanted to share with you what happened..
He got off the plane and got into a bullet proof vehicle, got to the area to meet with the Major General (2 Star) who is the commander here at Bagram..
As the Soldiers where lined up to shake his hand he blew them off and didn’t say a word as he went into the conference room to meet the General. As he finished, the vehicles took him to the ClamShell (pretty much a big top tent that military personnel can play basketball or work out in with weights) so he could take his publicity pictures playing basketball. He again shunned the opportunity to talk to Soldiers to thank them for their service..
So really he was just here to make a showing for the American’s back home that he is their candidate for President..
I think that if you are going to make
an effort to come all the way over here you would thank those that are providing the freedom that they are providing for you..
We got more thanks from the NBA Basketball Players or the Dallas Cowboy Cheer leaders than from one of the Senators, who wants to be the President of the United States ..
I just don’t understand how anyone would
want him to be our Commander-and-Chief. It was almost that he was scared to be around those that provide the freedom for him and our great country..
If this is blunt and to the point I am sorry but I wanted you all to know what kind of caliber of person he really is. What you see in the news is all fake..
In service,
CPT Jeffrey S..

TEA Cheers & Sue P. & RG and Artnorton and ALL for we ALL ALWAYS need Health Care — by ALL MANNERS in ALL WAYS — no matter the age…
 :priest: :menorah: :sdavid: :rabbi: :yinyang: :om: :pent: /|\
I feel we need a Sea-Change, a Manhattan Project, going to the Moon-type of direction regarding HEALTH CARE… and ways to pay  … and the same type of Sea Change regarding THE Air, THE Earth, & THE Water….. started NOW. It is just a PART OF LIFE & DEATH & LIFE again…..(i.e. … for THE FUTURE)!
just my “dreams”
Thanks for that O’Bama slam Druid and the usual back up link and substantiation. It just reeks with cred so I am sure it will be firing up the ‘tubes shortly. All that is missing is a cheap young blonde and an arugula ref.
Black Forest Berry Organic Honest Tea Cheers! :joe:
I am sorry Vernon, WTF r U talking about?
It is just another on “my (their) comments” by All Friends off an extremely radical — Non Violent “pagey thingy” … … :pirate: a!i!v!
Oh, that’s been going around all the freeper sites. It certainly sounds like typical Rovian bullshit (according to this site in the UK, there’s nobody on the USMC roster by that name, but they don’t provide any proof of that either, and that there’s no such title as “Battle Captain” in the US Military – being no expert, I don’t know much about that, either, but I expect it’s easy to check.).
I like this quote, though:
There are plenty of real reasons not to like Obama (his apparent willingness to reverse himself on off-shore oil drilling for one), this bullshit isn’t one of them, though.
Get ready for 3 months of this :crap: .
All intended to depress the exuberance of folks not usually engaged in the process.
You know, some say…
Well, in some respects, it’s a good thing. Not this kind of dumb stuff, but I think Obama is going to be a letdown to a lot of people who think he’s a progressive. He’s a very middle of the road, Clinton-like Democrat.
A bit disappointing, until you look at John McCain.
…sounds s bit Rovian and Kosian (those that drank the cool-aid poison) to me…a!i!v! … LBH
I am always open for ‘pleasantly surprised’ but will settle for ‘can’t get no worse’. I would also just be satisfied to have someone represent this nation who might bring back some degree of respect and dignity in the world. I would love to leave again without having to act like a Canadian.
And you know something else, :omg: I don’t really give a shit what some fooking redneck grunt soldier thinks if it is even a real ‘dispatch’ and not just some freeper fundy phony creation. It is an embarrassment and unworthy of any replication.
Yeah, it would be nice to be surprised. I honestly think McCain would be worse than what we already have. Especially with all the executive power that this administration has grabbed while Congress “just relaxed and enjoyed it.”
It would be nice to have a preznit that isn’t an international disgrace and embarrassment, even if he isn’t my ideal.
this is out there ……. and I know many young and old STILL opposed to Obama…
…and shouldn’t Obama and Obama-ites, & AAR & Nova M (Obama’s constant “proselytizers”) be able to SHOW his & their LEADERSHIP to be able to handle “truthful & direct” questions for THIS WORLD/ Our/My Nation?
Reagan was a tool, GWB is a tool, McKane will be a bigger tool. This guy is falling apart in front of our very eyes so he will easily fill the ‘suit’ if elected for the mission to be executed by the puppet masters.
But it looks like O’Bama will not meet the purity test of many progs (funny how Hill was their punching back not so long ago) and so-called fems. He will definitely fall short on the race test and taking care of himself to not become a big old popular fat chunk of goo will not help much either.
This should be a slam dunk but the repugs will be doing everything in their power to suppress the vote in every way and on every level. It is their only hope.
Clinton or Obama, same thing. Either better than McCain.
Oh, I guess I could be like a 2000 Naderite, and say that Obama or Clinton are the same as McCain, and that if it can’t be Kucinich, then I’d rather do everything I can to make sure Obama doesn’t win to teach everybody a lesson.
But I don’t think I can deal with another 8 years of McCain. I’d rather deal with 8 years of continual disappointment.
Re 7
I heard that being debunked on either Steph’s show or Thom’s. Maybe you should just vote for McCain and be done with it.
For Decades, I have “played” the DEM way, when many went away………from the Dems
Obama “fits the dream”, but it is all just sadly smoke and mirrors —
Thank You, V, for reminding me to write Al Gore…..
…things happen at & in the conventions
Oh, no. That’s not how it works. Like Ralph Nader, you trash the person who comes the closest to your own ideals, and then when the most horribly destructive administration in our history drags the country into the toilet, you disavow all responsibility.
I understand the desire to vote for a great candidate who will finally do all the things we all know this country desperately needs. But, if we don’t vote for Obama, we are. really voting for McInsane, who will pollute more and kill more as he takes this country further down the path that is making the rich very rich and the rest of us disposable.
The kind of stupid, nasty campaign McSame is running is the kind of president he will be and the most vulnerable will suffer mightily. I think we need to do our best to prevent that.
As for the Marine’s claim, it really sounds like rightie stuff, to me. And, it fits nicely with the sleazy, dishonest campaign the GOP has run, so far.
Just to add my two cents concerning Obama’s compromise regarding offshore oil drilling. Obama was in a no-win situation here. The majority favor offshore oil drilling despite the fact it will not be a quick solution to high gasoline prices. No one can wave a magic wand here. Not Barack, not McCain. If the compromise can result in bipartisan legislation which includes a move to clean burning and solar, wind and electric – Nick Thomas is all for it. The BIG picture here is that our way of life is in jeopardy. I’d much prefer Barack Obama be holding the reigns of power here than John McCain. As Sam Seder said: Who do you want to be President? John McCain or Barack Obama? Those are your choices. No third party candidates will win the presidency. So choose your man or sit at home. If you choose to sit out this election don’t complain when McCain appoints two, perhaps three justices to the US Supreme Court. Don’t complain when our military sets up permanent bases in Iraq. Don’t complain when we use military force against Iran. It’ll be your f***ing fault for electing a Bush clone. Do you want that?
Sorry I’ve not been around much but I’m getting the impression I’m not welcome around here. If anyone wants to talk to me you can write me at my email addy of cnickthomas@mac.com
over and out
I’m sorry for voting for Nader in 2000! I’ll never live that down! :fustrate:
What! Not welcome! Of course you’re welcome Cnick!
Why would you say that, CNick? Everybody’s welcome here.
Well, everyone’s welcome except that speed racer troll from the AAR MS blog. :fu: I wonder where he’s trolling now. I seem to recall he had a special fondness for Kevin  Mr. Manties himself. 😉
Ha. He had the hots for you, too, as I recall.
He’s the only person I ever made an effort to ban from here. He was kind of “pre-banned.” He slipped a couple past the goalie, but, since he wasn’t too bright, he was fairly easy to manage.
I enjoy reading what you have to say, CNick. Why don’t you feel welcome?
IMAGINE ….. a mother & father of a 2 year old and a baby, just born as of Lughnasadh, proper … living in AZ
they too do not trust Obama
If it wasn’t for the DRUID SLAM … I would not have said a f…k’n’ thing…
then started the :slap: 🙄 *poof*
ONE COULDN’T just said a non-derogatory statement … or even just to say ANOTHER Obama statement … 🙄 but noooooo  whatever …
Hots! Yeah, like Joe Schmoe who used to sit behind me in Algebra and draw on my back and pull my hair because he was too repressed to admit he liked me. Little twerp!
Well, the funny thing is that it doesn’t seem to be that Obama isn’t the “perfect” candidate, but that he didn’t wait his turn and usurped Hillary Clinton as the heir to the throne. Odd, that. Obama will be disappointing, of that I’m certain. Clinton has already been disappointing. That’s the difference, as far as I can see.
But, whatever. Either McCain will be the next preznit, or Obama will. Either way, those who are pure can stand back and smugly exclaim that they were right. And the rest of us will get what “we” deserve.
OMG! I got these tortillas at the farmers market today that are so SOFT and CHEWY and…….heaven. I had to share.
To quote Jack Kerouak, “You’re either on the bus, or off the bus”
OMG! Have I said how amazingly wonderful these tortillas are?? :omg:

During my trip to Winthrop, Wa I saw the ranger station were Kerouac stayed for 63 days. No big deal, I guess.
I was just on Mt. Hood today at the Timberline Lodge.
Smokey’s birthday means free cake! :cake:
Oooh! How do I get a job as a fire look out? I would love that kind of solitude! There’s got to be a huge demand for them anymore.
I just want some Big Sky
Free Cake!? :bong:
The Love Me Nots are playing at the Yucca Tap Room tonight. And yes, it’s as divey as it sounds. Hopefully there will be room to dance. :dancers:
This is about 20 miles from Desolation Peak
If he loses it is SOLELY Obama-ite’s fault solely.
All I am saying is I did DECADES of eco work. … now the moment is for THOSE THAT CROWNED another King…Rethug-ite Obama to fight for him — I will never… So go out and fight for him.
You ALL gave me no viable choices … 🙄 so I just stand with Gore (but on the radical side), and work on national projects — dealing with those of ALL ages.
I can understand those in NOLA area … voting for Obama
I guess when personally, I verbally and physically hear negative words from 8) folk about Obama, that is not good enough here (talking about friends and families — in REAL LIFE), although I hear less validation from some here. I do not have TIME to deal with this :crap: A!I!V!
Originally, all I wanted to say, on post 9 of mine, was to also end with a dear  to RG, especially, & Sue P. & the rest … dealing with the Horrid madness of and with The Medical :crap:
Poof
How is it a choice between Gore and Obama?????Gore is not running and I really don’t think he will be convinced to and I don’t blame him. Gore will put pressure on Obama once in office and that is how Gore will influence things. McCain is faaaarrrr worse than Obama on environmental issues. He scores 0% with most environmental groups as far as his votes go. Who are you gonna vote for, McCain or Obama?
Is that you, Travis? I sure did love driving around Oregon when I lived there. I wish I would have been more successful.
One letter sure makes a difference– were, where.
Numbers can bee a squint, too, buzzin’ around it’s so easy to loose sight.
Wow- 47 posts hot and heavy on the blog today 😀
Not much to add except I saw the gears working in the rethug echo chamber live sometime this last week. David Shuster was talking to some thug congresswoman from Calif. about off-shore drilling and she pulled some poll out of her ass that she said showed that 80 % of Californians supported drilling the ocean. Shuster asked her for a reference or a link or anything that might back up her bullshit and she could only say “I’ll get that to you later today”. Cut to commercial- then Shuster is on with a democrat and his lead question is “So, how do you respond to this poll that shows that 80% support etc, etc” :growl: :fustrate: 😡 :fu:
How are we ever going to get back ANY BALANCE IN THIS G#&^%DAM MEDIA”? or make anyone take any responsibility for the lying? especially in the face of an utterly complacent sheep-like citizenry??
:reaper: :jason: :fist:
Yeah, all they have to do is say it on the air. It doesn’t have to be true or backed up. Just the words going into peoples ears makes it true because it was heard on tv. :fustrate:

Fun day. Great Japanese food last night. Got to a little farmers’ mkt in the Fillmore and great Chinese tonight. Tomorrow my friends visiting from NashVegas want to go to Marin to the great farmers’ mkt there and probably on to wine country.
An O’Bama poster coming to replace the missing glass in my ‘new’ car until the rainy season hits. Cool thing is if some BHO hatin’ redneck wants to throw a rock through it, there is no window anyway!
Fred Dean-NFL HOF! :yippee:

It took me since last time I posted … to simply say, the picture did not want to post (some pixs allow posting, some do not) and so I was going back to where it did post. It was just the WORLD Sea Shepherd ecalling the Loyal Ones To Arms (figurely speaking 🙄
