I used to think it was kind of dumb to have Columbus Day be a holiday, what with him not actually discovering anything, and all the stories they told us in school (like that everybody but brave Columbus thought the world was flat back then and whatnot) being bullshit. But, when you think about it, it’s kind of perfect.
The Columbus’ marketing department sells us the story that Columbus was was a discoverer, adventurer, visionary – even hero. In reality, he was a mass-murderer, rapist, and greedy miser out to make himself rich while claiming to be a good Christian.
If that’s not a fitting symbol for what this country has become, I don’t know what is. Besides, a day off is a day off.
Paul Krugman wins the Nobel Prize for economics.
Now that you put it that way PJ, I think Columbus IS a great symbol for Amerika. I certainly do like these days that I don’t have to work.
Congratulations to Krugman. Faux News must be working hard to disparage both prize nd recipient.
On the road
Marc Maron sets out to find out what’s ailing Americans, find out how they’re getting through these turbulent times and, in the process, find out a thing or two about himself
At the edge of Santa Monica pier – on the western edge of America itself – comedian and Air America Media host Marc Maron begins a unique journey for the Guardian. As host and trail-blazer for the paper’s ‘On the road to the White House’ series for Election 08, Maron and a team of film-makers aim to capture the heart and soul of an increasingly troubled America.
Since when did Columbus day warrant a day off? I’ve never gotten it off. I always thought it was a bank holiday only.
Yay! Paul Krugman! :yippee:
Banks, schools, Post Office, State and Federal Government….
Hate to tell you how election day is a holiday for me, too. ๐
I really need to learn not to read the comments on these stories. All they do is enrage me. I guess maybe I thought The Guardian would be different.

Marc!- Nice picture…

Ooh! I hope I see Marc when he comes here. He’ll probably visit his brother. Maybe I should camp out there, I think he lives in Scottsdale now. He used to live in Chandler.
:bf: :fire:
So, is he still doing the show? I can imagine the technical difficulties on the road. :jerk:
It sounds a lot more involved than just Marc and Brendan in a moho. Almost like a real job.
Well, this ought to get the wingnuts going, and help the McCain campaign.
Hey, Patrick Farrelly and Kate O’Callaghan are the people who did Left of the Dial.
It’s Thanksgiving day here in Canuckistan!

Thanks, SJ. I don’t think anyone has posted those links here in the last 2 hours.
Why does Canadian TG and Columbus Day fall on the same day?
In fact, this one link looks like it might be the the main page that is getting updated.
However. I don’t see any Las Vegas on it.
I don’t want to gloat (really, I do) but I just got my grade from my cal. test from Friday and it’s a 95.5%. I got lucky on that one, let me tell you.
Green Tea! :joe:
I thought I’d announce it to the blog since I really don’t have anyone else to notify
Way to go Travis!   :pup: :cat:
Thanks.
Why does Canadian TG and Columbus Day fall on the same day?

Maybe the Canadians are thankful that Columbus didn’t land there!
:rofl2:
Home from work an hour early to watch the Rays game! GO RAYS!
:fist:
Great job, Travis.
Congrats to Paul Krugman! Reading his columns helped me get my house.
I have GOT to listed to the MvS podcasts more often. I had no idea about the Guardian roadtrip.
YAY TRAVIS!
excellent score on a very hard course. WTG!
Why does Canadian TG and Columbus Day fall on the same day?
the Queen is british.
Hooray, Travis! 8)
That is pretty awesome Travis. I mathed it up before I went to college but pursued lib’rul arts at that point and lost interest. I think my head would crack if I tried to go back to it.
I guess the real answer to my earlier question is that they both are on the second Monday of October. I suspect it was the Canadians pulling a Hanukkah or Kwanzaa stunt on the US to horn in on our ”great day’. Couldn’t do it in November, could they? As for the above ‘answers’ :rofl2: . I have to give the nod to Kevin as most believable.
Did we detect a little resentment from Seder today because Maron has cool work thing going on all of the sudden? It certainly won’t hurt him and MvS or AA
RM to get the exposure and frankly I think Maron is the better choice. Sounds like that would be a fun trip to hook up with for a few days. Maybe they could fly me back to advance the Richmond part of the trip.It also sounds like they will be in AZ in the next day or two.. Shouldn’t be too hard to spot if both of those mohos look like that.
The man behind the Obama is a Muslim rumors, Anthony Martin, was featured in a Faux News Documentary in which he made more crazy assertions. The NY Times takes a hard look at both the man and his “facts.” You will not be surprised to learn he’s nutty, anti-semitic and untruthful. But, it’s an interesting read, anyhow.

Ouch! Rachel just made mincemeat of David Frum who tried to equate Rachel’s sarcasm with McCain hate rhetoric.
Congrats Travis! I think I only did that, like, once. Except in my AutoCAD class I got all A’s :sammy:
Thanks everyone. This math may get insanely hard soon, so we’ll see how long I can manage to stay afloat.
How long have you been in school, Travis? I didn’t even make it a year, I had to quit a month before the end. It was an intense 2 year program too and I heard the 2nd year was a bitch.
Okay, so, I have a friend who is gay and is an artist. He’s been part of the “scene” here for years and makes some really cool “televisors” and some video stuff. But he is a total republican and won’t even listen to anything from the other side. So, I thought I’d check out the Log Cabin Republicans site to see where they stood on McCain. I was thinking they were probably against him and I would email my friend their web site if they were. But they aren’t. They love McCain and they love Palin.
How the hell do they get that message???? :fustrate:
I’m not attacking a full-time students’ schedule, just sort of nibbling until I can transfer to the UW. This is my second year in the math department. Hopefully I can take all the math classes that are offered at the school I’m at now and maybe in the future become a math tutor and take some physics courses. It may take awhile to accomplish but that’s what I’m thinking the plan is right now. Next week it may be a different story.
That’s probably a good way to do it. You’re young and used to being in school. I was older and had already done the 4 year plan(actually took 5 in all) and couldn’t bear another 4 years of school so I was looking for a 2 year plan that would get me a decent paying job.
Who’s that, Vern? I expanded it into the big screen and Miss Nellie started growling at it. WTF? It’s the Blues, Nellie!
William Claxton dies at 80; photographer helped make Chet Baker famous
By Jon Thurber, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
October 13, 2008
William Claxton, the master photographer whose images of Chet Baker helped fuel the jazz trumpeter’s stardom in the 1950s and whose fashion photographs of his wife modeling a topless swim suit were groundbreaking years later, has died. He was 80.

So, Since my doc died I have been having very lucid dreams. Super trippy, man. And there’s even been a couple where I fight someone and I actually kick their ASS! Usually when I fight someone in a dream I punch and hit and it doesn’t phase them at all, very frustrating.
