Another crappy day on Wall St. yesterday (so, what else is new). Norm Coleman is hanging on to his lead in the MN Senate recount, ahead by 136 votes with 46% recounted. Both have challenged about the same number of ballots, which, from what I’ve read, will mostly all be counted given the standard in MN is the ‘intent of the voter’ (as it should be).
Here, we’ve got a couple of inches of snow on the ground, with more expected today and tonight (all weekend, really). Depending on how the wind blows, we could wake up to anywhere from a couple of inches to more than a foot by tomorrow morning. So, it looks like I’d better figure out where the shovel is, ‘cuz Granny’s gonna need it.
At least it’s Friday, finally.
We Have Words to Describe Ken Lewis
One of them is ungrateful. Hypocrite is another.
Bank of America CEO Ken Lewis slammed a potential auto-industry bailout this Tuesday. The banking bigwig made his remarks just as auto executives from GM, Ford and Chrysler were on Capitol Hill begging for a $25 billion emergency bridge loan to avert a collapse of one or more of their companies.
“I think there’s one too many” automakers, Lewis said to the Detroit Economic Club during a meeting in Cobo Center, the downtown convention center that’s home to the North American International Auto Show each January.
“I think the American people are suspect of just giving more money and buying more time,” he told reporters following the speech, according to The Associated Press. “They want to see that the companies have, in fact, changed and the strategies have changed.”
Sorry Ken, but bankers in glass houses shouldn’t toss grenades.
Lewis shouldn’t balk at anyone getting a handout, after nine large banks – including Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citigroup and JPMorgan Chase – received $125 billion last month.
Oh, and what did Lewis do with the $25 billion of the government’s largesse that you said you didn’t need? Instead of lending it out to Americans being crushed by the credit crisis, like he was supposed to do, he announced this week that Bank of America is buying more shares of China Construction Bank, raising its stake to 19.1% of the company.
If a Big 3 bailout fails, at least taxpayer dollars will be squandered over here, not half a world away.
Dumb-o-meter score: 95

It seems that Hillary is on track to be Sec. of State, which would leave NY with a senate vacancy. I read, yesterday, in the NY Post, that the favorite for her replacement is Andrew Cuomo. I don’t think that would be a bad choice.
Nah, let’s nominate a woman. Granny for Senate!
:fist:
If it’s Cuomo, then the Gov can appoint Eliot Spitzer as AG.
Hmm. Appears to be a bit of a white out going on out there at the moment.
Jan. 20, 2009, will be a historic day. Barack Obama (Columbia, Harvard Law) will take the oath of office as his wife, Michelle (Princeton, Harvard Law), looks on proudly. Nearby, his foreign policy advisers will stand beaming, including perhaps Hillary Clinton (Wellesley, Yale Law), Jim Steinberg (Harvard, Yale Law) and Susan Rice (Stanford, Oxford D. Phil.).
The domestic policy team will be there, too, including Jason Furman (Harvard, Harvard Ph.D.), Austan Goolsbee (Yale, M.I.T. Ph.D.), Blair Levin (Yale, Yale Law), Peter Orszag (Princeton, London School of Economics Ph.D.) and, of course, the White House Counsel Greg Craig (Harvard, Yale Law).

And yet as much as I want to resent these overeducated Achievatrons (not to mention the incursion of a French-style government dominated by highly trained Enarchs), I find myself tremendously impressed by the Obama transition.

That’s David Brooks, writing in the NY Times. I’m glad he’s impressed by these “overeduated” folks, but I want to know how can someone be overeducated? Unless you want blind allegiance to a stupid leader like Bush, I would think the more education, the better.
I think Spitzer has a proven ability that would make him perfect to lead the office of procurement.
Aides to Al Franken’s campaign said on Friday that the deficit they face against Norm Coleman in their Senate recount is now less than 100 votes.
“It is fair to say that Norm Coleman’s lead is now in the double digits,” said Marc Elias, a lawyer for the campaign. He added, more optimistically that, “there are more Democratic areas with votes left to be counted than Republican.”
The Franken math is not official. They are basing their findings both on the 51.1 percent of the state-wide recount that they have completed, but which is not reported by the Secretary of State, as well as a portion of the 800-or-so contested ballots that they believe will be easily resolved

Travis, I hope all went well. I have a desk I need to move down the hall. I did it once but now I am not having much luck.
I have some vivid memories of trying to move a sofa into another apartment and not having it fit through the door. The apartment was on the third floor of the complex, so it was a great pain moving it and having to give it away.
Happy about Hilary. I hope NYState can fill her pantsuit with someone good. I would like to see some younger blood in his cabinet; I know the right wing noise machine is irrelevant, but I don’t want them to have any ammunition to complain that Obama is just Clinton III.
Meanwhile, having fun with an abscess under a crown. I’ll be seeing the dentist tomorrow first thing, I hope I don’t need another root canal.
Lottie likes to play with shoes.
It’s quite breezy and drippy outside, here in Sunny Seattle. A bit ago, I aimlessly went for a walk, ended up on a bus somehow and fortunately made it back home without getting struck down by any falling trees. Though, I was momentarily stopped by a stranger who wanted me to give him money, I managed to survive the excursion without much drama.
I thought I’d clue everyone in on what’s going on because I know how important it is.
have some gale winds here, too, trav. glad you didn’t blow away. I think i have a mold problem…the garage under me has mold, I just found out. I’ve been ill with odd flu/cold symptoms for a good 2 weeks, but nothing specific. anyone know anything about this stuff? i’m airing this place out with wind and tea tree oil. We’re leaving for 5 days and will see if i get better.
the teenager arrives tomorrow from college and i can NOT wait! :dancers:
Mold likes moisture. What’s keeping it damp?

Another blog is dealing with turkey brining. I think we covered that 2 years ago.
As for me, I made some shrimp ceviche. Raw shrimp ‘cooked’ in fresh lime juice with cilantro, jalapeno, and avocado. Maybe I should call it Mexican roulette.
