Kinda warm this morning, but winter is supposed to return this afternoon. We might even get some snow, though I don’t know if there’ll be enough to break in the new snowshoes. Still not really feeling up to it anyway. Three weeks ’til X-Mas, which means in a month it’ll be 2009. Have to get ready for the big Twilight Zone Marathon. I think it’s time to start burning some vacation time.
Andy congrats on that raise.
3 week ’til Xmas? I need about 6 weeks. I should start this process in September, but there are always so many other things to do. This week I’ll make my pilgrimage to the Brooklyn Museum shop, a fantastic source for great jewelry, and an OK place to shop. Not very crowded and and I get to support the museum as well.
Gotta work, or those stockings will be very empty.
Wow. Everyone must be watching the hearings.
Looks like we jumped the shark.
We visited a place that sells microscopes, mostly to schools and over the internet so they were pretty surprised when we showed up. In fact, we never would have found the place without GPS because not only was it “off the beaten path” but the street name had been stolen.
But, it was a good experience because we got to see some microscopes and talk to someone who seemed to know something. We ended up with one that had two eye pieces, making viewing easier and that had easy to adjust controls.
There’s still more Christmas stuff to do. Bah Humbug.
I know what jumping the shark means but where does the expression come from?
It comes from a three-part episode of Happy Days, in which the gang from Milwaukee visits Hollywood. At one point, a water-skiing Fonzie (clad in swim trunks and leather jacket) jumps a penned-in shark.
The feeling among many fans was that the show had begun to run out of steam by featuring a plotline from current pop culture of the time, rather than the late ’50s and early ’60s. This episode aired in the mid-’70s, when Evel Knievel was at his peak of fame.
I was surprised to learn that Happy Days aired another 100 or so episodes after it jumped the shark. Damn, I probably watched them all too.
This concludes today’s lesson in ancient history. You kids can go back to your Facebooks now.
Thanks, Kevin. That’s a long time for such an allusion to survive and I haven’t heard the expression until recently.
I just saw a terrorist, G. Gordon Liddy, on a commercial for gold stocks running on Fox Noise.
Bank of America is particularly concerned about surface mining conducted through mountain top removal in locations such as central Appalachia. We therefore will phase out financing of companies whose predominant method of extracting coal is through mountain top removal. While we acknowledge that surface mining is economically efficient and creates jobs, it can be conducted in a way that minimizes environmental impacts in certain geographies.

SueP:re jumping the shark
Clearly you’re not watching enough televsion :tap:
Art, I will try to watch more. Do I need the turn on the sound?
You need to tivo hours and hours of Colbert, the Daily show and msnbc and then delete it without watching it like I do so that you can have room to record hours and hours of “John Adams” which I never got around to watching either (and then I end up watching
some cool old Elsa Lanchester movie in B&W on TCM). 😯
but you’ll want to leave the sound on for Elsa Lanchester.
I thought vernon would pick this up first-

She was very special during my college days.
One in three toys tested by a Michigan nonprofit group contained medium or high levels of toxic chemicals, according to a report released Wednesday. And U.S.-made children’s toys didn’t necessarily contain fewer toxins than their imported counterparts.

Would have art but I have 2 days of Olbermann and Rachel to catch up on and Daily Show/Colbert and yesterday’s MvS not to mention this week’s Boston Legal and the whole new season of Dylan show downloads…
i’m way behind in my viewing/listening, too. although rachel gets watched and usually the ko.
So that boat was definitely ’50ish. We had one sorta like it. Beautiful wood with a small Johnson outboard. Got us all up – very sloow getting up for the larger people, though.
sue, what kind of scope did you end up with and for what age group is it? I have an 8 year old nephew who would love one.
Thanks Sue
FK, we got the one called The Professor.

Marcaroni and cheese
I found what looks like Maron’s recipe, just add the anger and cigar ash.
Re:17
Ha! Sue, so funny you posted that, we were talking about it at work today. I was working for the lesbian today. I’ll have to pass it along.
I, of course, saw all Happy Days episodes at least twice each, not to mention Lavern and Shirley but I don’t remember “jump the shark” becoming an expression. But that was the only episode that The Fonz showed his legs. We never actually saw him beat anyone up, did we. He exuded toughness but he wasn’t a big guy and would have been toast in any real fight, I bet.
I remember Nanoo, nanoo becoming a catch phrase though. Trivia that I can’t answer: How many teevee shows were spin off’s from Happy Days?
Lavern and Shirley, Mork and Mindy and that’s all I can think of right now.
thanks sp. That looks great!
can’t think of any others kp. ron howard went far, though. i haven’t been able to watch mvs in a while….hmmmm….. i’m working too much! :tap:
At least you’re working. :smack: 😯
Happy Days begat Laverne and Shirley begat Mork and Mindy (a vehicle to exploit the manic genius of Robin Williams).
From L&S we got Lenny (Michael McKean) and Squiggy (David Lander) who had worked in LA Radio with Harry Shearer as the Credibility Gap. Shearer and McKean went on to future exploits with Christopher Guest. Landers is afflicted with MS.
this place is a wealth of information. vern, thanks for bringing this back, boom shakalakalaka!
kp, you’re right about that! i’d rather be looking for a new job in my spare time than looking for a job as my full-time job.
I can’t break down the Lear empire but here is a link, sadly…
Paul Benedict, Jeffersons Neighbor & Sesame Street Painter, Found Dead
George Jefferson didn’t welcome Mr. Harry Bentley into his home with open arms, but the good-natured Brit was always on hand anyway, usually for a good laugh.
Paul Benedict, the American actor who was often mistaken for British thanks to his role as George and Louise’s neighbor on The Jeffersons, was found dead Monday at his home on Martha’s Vineyard. He was 70. The cause of death is under investigation, according to Benedict’s brother, Charles.
The New Mexico native, while best known for his nearly 10-year run as Bentley, was also an Obie Award-winning theater director, as well as a prolific character actor.
Gen-Xers may recognize him as the bowler-capped Number Painter from Sesame Street, who started popping up in random places to decorate his surroundings with a big white numeral in 1972.
Notable film appearances include the 1977 Oscar winner The Goodbye Girl, The Freshman, This Is Spinal Tap and The Addams Family. He was also memorably mistaken for Broadway critic Mort Guffman in Christopher Guest’s cult-classic comedy Waiting for Guffman.

If you want to see maybe the biggest shark jump in TV history, try this season of Grey’s Anatomy.
Meanwhile…
ho ho
don’t know if any of you know about this web site, caring bridge. it’s pretty cool. a friend (an orthopedic surgeon) was recently in a bicycle accident. A rent-a-cop car ran in to him, head-on. Didn’t think he would make it, but looks like he’ll be a paraplegic. This web site is a blog/web site/ forum to keep in touch with people who are ill. It’s a way to communicate with friends and family. It’s very cool, I think. They post updates and the site emails the friends/family. You can write to your friend/family member. So you’re in touch, but it’s on their terms/time frame. They aren’t unnecessarily bothered. Like now, the whole family is learning adjusting. Anyway, I’ve been impressed with the idea and thought you might, too.
