It’s 54 degrees outside right now, but that’s not supposed to last long. Drizzle is supposed to turn to snow by 10:00, and it should be in the 20’s by the time I get home from work. In other news, the owner of Syracuse China (Libbey), is closing the plant. And they’ve got the audacity to keep the “Syracuse China” brand, though they won’t even be making it the United States, let alone Syracuse.
It’s yet another in a long line of successful local businesses (they’ve been around since 1871, and I’ve eaten off their dinnerware in places as far away as Ireland, and in ‘high class’ joints like the Mayflower Hotel in DC) to be bought out and closed, radically downsized, or moved away. Not because they weren’t making money, of course, but because they weren’t making enough money.
So, another 275 jobs will be gone from here in about four months. The way things are going, there’ll be nothing left here but shopping malls – and I don’t know who’s going to have enough money to do more than wander around zombie-like and look at all the empty stores. Not to worry. I’m sure our government officials will fix everything as soon as they’re done bailing out the financial services industry.
Paul McCartney’s side project – the Fireman – has a new album called Electric Arguments. So what, you ask? Well, Sir Paul is selling it as a DRM-free electronic download (you can also stream the whole thing for free before you shell out $8.99 to buy it), making it available as a 320kbps mp3, and also in FLAC (an open source lossless format) and Apple lossless, for those of you who disdain open source stuff and are slaves to iTunes. I haven’t actually listened to it, so I don’t know if it sucks or not, but I thought it was cool of him to do it that way.
Happy 52nd, Milorad “Rod” R. Blagojevich!

Federal investigators are looking into allegations that a longtime friend and benefactor tried to steer money to U.S. Sen. Norm Coleman, the Pioneer Press has learned.
Agents with the FBI have talked to or made efforts to talk to people in Texas familiar with the allegations, according to a source familiar with the situation.
Houston is where the first of two lawsuits was filed alleging Nasser Kazeminy, a Bloomington financier, tried to steer $100,000 to Coleman via his wife’s Minneapolis employer. The second suit, filed in Delaware, alleges Kazeminy initially tried to get money directly to the senator.

Black hole confirmed in Milky Way
Neil Degrasse Tyson on Death by Black Hole:
It has been very warm and overcast for the past 2 days. Tomorrow is suppose to be quite cold and Friday’s forecast is snow.
Christmas shopping almost done, except for hubby who is very difficult. He wants a camera lens. I know much less about camera lenses than I do about computers, which of course means I know nothing. I think it’s going to be much easier to just take him with me or get him to order it online.
Hit by Recession, NPR to Lay Off Seven Percent of Staff
By Paul Farhi
Washington Post Staff Writer

Faced with a sharp decline in revenue, National Public Radio said today it will pare back its once-flourishing operations, and institute its first organization-wide layoffs in 25 years.
Even the NFL is laying off 10% of its staff.
The local Christmas Bureau already has 1,000 more needy families registered with it than last year, and registration only started Monday.
You have a Christmas bureau? Are they under attack and suitably protected?
:santacool: :turkey:
I don’t think they’re under attack (at least, I haven’t heard of anybody threatening them). They provide X-mas meals and presents to poor families in the area.
christmas shopping done? egads, i haven’t even thought about it. :billcat:
The double-decker turkey up there ^ is shaking uncontrollably…is it just my computer?
(he’s Down there, once I post)
You never know where the War on CHRISTmas will show up.
:turkey:
The turkey definitely is nervous. Perhaps Palin’s scheduling a news conference nearby.
thanks sp. glad it’s not just my resident turkey  the girls and i were attacked by a big loose male dog while walking – we’re okay – but the dog’s owner runs the humane society. that’s not good. SouSou has been on guard since we were attacked multiple times by this one dog in georgia. and now this one. SouSou is not happy about other dogs now. :tap:

Don’t Let Them Destroy Our Union
The reluctance to bail out GM and the other Detroit automakers has everything to do with the UAW, as if the impending collapse is the fault of the workers at the bottom of the heap. The “free market” types want to use the current auto industry crisis to force a “restructuring” of the companies’ “relationships” principally with the UAW. We hear a chorus about “bloated UAW contracts”, contract terms that “GM can’t live with,” or references to “overpaid” autoworkers, etc. Never mind that just one year ago UAW autoworkers agreed to huge concessions in what President Ron Gettelfinger describes as a “transformative agreement” (for which, in the Detroit media, he was heralded “man of the year.”). That agreement, according to Gettelfinger, was designed to make the UAW labor force cheaper than their non-union brethren at Honda, Toyota, etc. This from a once proud union which set the industry standard.
always room at the table for more!
SP #6 is awesome, thanks! just got a chance to watch. that fora tv, though, has some crazy sh*t. owned by mega-corps, I see, so you know their bias. saw there was a piece from newt the grinch dissing human causes for global warning. gee, guess chevron had nothing to do with promoting that sucker! then they have ashcroft defending Guantanamo (you think he might have concerns about being prosecuted because he’s a war criminal?) propaganda is as propaganda does (or something like that). too bad, because they look like they have some cool stuff, too.
