You know, sometimes I wonder if Obama gets a kick outta tweaking “the left,” just to watch us get all pissed off (kind of like Sam baiting Marc, in hopes of getting him going). The latest example, of course, is picking the homophobic, anti-choice, pro-Capitalist (he calls people who espouse true Christian values like feeding the poor “Marxist”), mega-Church pastor Rick Warren to give the invocation at the Presidential inauguration in January.
Not that I really buy into that whole invocation thing. You might as well have Linus there to offer up a prayer to the Great Pumpkin for all I care. But we all know Obama is a smart dude, and we all know he knew exactly what he was doing when he made this decision. And it was totally unnecessary. He didn’t need to choose Bishop V. Gene Robinson to give the invocation, but he certainly could have picked somebody who didn’t actively campaign for Prop 8. Better yet, why not choose somebody like Rev. Barry Lynn?
I personally don’t think it matters in the least in terms of what this means for Obama’s political agenda. I don’t think he’ll suddenly move to throw gay people into reeducation camps (though he opposes gay marriage, which I suspect is on political grounds rather than moral, legal, or Constitutional ones) or outlaw abortion (or appoint anti-choice judges to the courts). But Obama knows this is a slap in the faces of an awful lot of people out there – especially gay people, and especially in light of Prop 8 – and he should know that nothing he does will make the Kristian Kracker Koalition love him, so you really gotta wonder why he does shit like this.
Before you feel compelled to make excuses for Obama, just imagine the shit we’d all – rightfully – have given a President-elect McCain for doing this. Except we should expect – make that demand – more out of Obama.
Unemployment here in CNY is the highest it’s been in 16 years. Hmmm. That would be, what, 1992? Who was president then? And who’s president now?
So, we’re awaiting the arrival of this rather fast-moving storm that’s coming across the country. The front edge is supposed to get here at about 10 this morning, and it’s not supposed to end until 8 o’clock this evening. It’s not going to be the biggest storm we’ve ever had (not by a long shot), but the timing of it kinda sucks, as it’s supposed to dump 8 to 14 inches of snow on us in a very short time this afternoon. Like, an inch an hour from 2:00 to 5:00, which is pretty hard for the plows to keep up with. Combined with holiday travelers and people just trying to get home on a Friday evening, that should make my commute home a pain in the ass.
Majel Roddenberry passed away. 😥
Speaking of people Obama is slapping in the face by choosing Rick Warren…
one of them would be me. Warren is on the record as saying that non-religious citizens are not entitled to run for public office.
Not that I was going to run for anything, but fuck you, Warren. Granted, it’s been a long time since I looked in a bible, but I don’t remember Jesus preaching about the joys of being exclusionary.
Not to mention separation of church and state. PJ is correct – Barry Lynn would have been a much better choice.
Here’s to you, Ricky. If you want to respond, I’ll be hanging out off the bandwagon with the LGBT folks.
:fu:
I just heard Bushie announce his bailout of the auto industry. I hope this is the end of the union busting era an the beginning of a union building era.
As for Rev Warren :barf:
I heard last night, from some I can’t remember pundit, that Warren wants the church to do more for the the poor. Is that not true?
I think an atheist can run for local public office in most places, and in a lot of places for for governor or senator, but one could never make it as pres. Maybe my grandkids will get to celebrate the election of the first atheist as prez (if we survive what this damned hyper-religious idiot has done, of course.)
Bristol Palin’s mother-in-law to be has been arrested on drug charges, though I don’t know which drug.

Paper’s count suggests Franken victory over Coleman
RAW STORY
Published: Thursday December 18, 2008
As of Thursday night, Republican Sen. Norm Coleman’s official lead over Democratic challenger Al Franken had shrunk to single digits, with 5,861 challenged ballots remaining to be counted.
But a newspaper’s count of remaining challenges suggests Franken will end up the winner.
The Minneapolis Star Tribune, having just wrapped its own count of the ballots in question, predicts a final margin of just 89 votes, in Franken’s favor. A Franken win would give Democrats 59 Senate seats.
Always did want to go to a Betazoid wedding.
Happy Birthday to Robert B. Sherman!
h/t to Little Feat’s Sam Clayton on percussion row
:cake: :dancers:
We of the Neo Zen Druid (Reformed) church do not recognize Rick Warren as being representative of the species homo sapiens. We also doubt if would understand what that term means.
However, the seating members of The Church of Sunday/Monday Night Football do see Mr. Warren’s worth, mainly as a tackling dummy.
nice ode to warren today….
vern, what is that stick thing? It looks like a bird leg. And speaking of Little Feat, one of my best strays I named Miss. Lowell George. She was one of the smartest dogs I’ve ever owned. Found her abandoned and starving on the Orygun coast. Sometimes I think Gigi is her incarnate. :gate:
I emailed this game to mr fk. He said the guys in the phone center thought it was gunfire. note to self: careful what you email people in a war zone. 😮
Now I did NOT double post, but it looked like I did. :tap:
re#6 heard that Bristol’s baby is due tomorrow so I’m glad the new Grandma got out on bail for the big event. (do I laugh or cry about this?)
What came to mind for me was a Festivus stick, pole, whatever.
I think they are supposed to be made out of aloominium though. :knit:
Last night I had a nightmarish dream where I dropped my laptop in snow :omg:
It’s still looming over me :joe:
should have got the black one :spank:
Maybe so.
Festivus, si! It is aluminum.
How festivusful of you, Vern!
:fire:
:cat:
I don’t really know who this is.
Maybe some of you old birds might know.
I remember the surfer dude from Apocalypse now, but not really him specifically. I remember his brother Timothy, of course.
The real question is, would Barack Obama allow Bottoms at his inauguration, and, if he did, would Warren refuse to do the invocation?
You know, you really gotta wonder how people could fill out their ballots so poorly. Didn’t they ever take standardized tests in school?
I think a little tolerance is called for :40:

OLD BIRD :tap: :turkey: :parrot: :penguin: :fustrate:
Of course I know who Ti :spank: mothy Bottoms is.
Maybe Obama is on the down-low, and is overcompensating for it?
We got our tree today and managed to get caught in the snowstorm as a result. Very scary. Lots of spinning wheels and fishtailing cars. Trucks too! Took 3 times longer to get home than to go.
How was the drive home, PJ?
They were kind enough to let us out early, so I was able to avoid the traffic. Pretty crappy road conditions, though, as it was snowing pretty hard. The official tally as of 4 PM was 8.1 inches. I’d say we got about 10 where I live. Not too bad. More to come on Sunday, they say.
Maybe they were home schooled. :spank:
Goo one, KP. :rofl2:
RE: Ballots
Welcome to MN. 🙄
And people wonder why I’m driven to drink by the office job…
Some recent Bush wisdom:
“I was a wartime President and war is very exhausting. War is hard for a country. And, you know, I made the decision that we were going to win.”
“The other part of my presidency that’s been hard is we’ve had, you know, huge economic turmoil recently,” he added.
“I’m just so sorry it’s happening. But it is happening and therefore I have made the decision not to let there be a massive collapse, which would hurt the average guy in the street.”

It’s been eight years, and it still amazes me that so little going on in the Bush brain.
Nice post about Majel Barrett, Vern. I just found out a few minutes ago.
:gate:
Bus tour of Seattle anyone? :omg:
old birds? Who are you talking about? I thought being on a blog we were all equals? :billcat:
religious tolerance? I personally have it, but the evangelicals and some other religions (Mormons come to mind) have zero tolerance for others. They are extremists. I think Obama could have picked someone not from California who worked to pass prop 8 – that’s the big rub. An evangelical in this role, I’m okay with. It’s a neutered position. Warren. That was just a stupid and insensitive choice. Obama ain’t perfect.
Got my kayak off the boat dock tonight and in to the garage. :cold: The weather is supposed to get super nasty this weekend.
:barf: Toby keith (sp?) is on the colbert christmas. that guy’s video was horrific. his song christmas is under attack is unreal. he uses guns and bombs – an a-bomb – this guy is sicker and more twisted than i ever thought. :yuck:
