Slept in late today. Must have been all that shoveling yesterday. It wasn’t bad until the snowplow finally made it through. Looks like I didn’t miss much though. The economy remains in the crapper, Ahnuld is telling CA State workers to take unpaid leave, and the more people hear about Caroline Kennedy, the less impressed they are with her.
Well, time to go see how much more snow we got overnight.
It’s certainly a winter wonderland here on Shelter Island. The snow is hard packed and icy. Even the dogs are having a hard time walking around. And, it’s snowing some more.
The birds of Central Park did an outstanding job of being photogenic against the snow, yesterday.
And we took an interesting tour of the local economy, yesterday. We paid $35 for a xmas tree that cost $40, last year. Then we did some shopping in the touristy Greenport and were constantly surprised by discounts of 40% and more.
Ellis, D passes
Former major league pitcher Dock Ellis dies at 63
By BEN WALKER, AP Baseball Writer 3 hours, 16 minutes ago
Pittsburgh Pirates Pitcher Dock Ellis expresses his sentiments about West Division Winners San Francisco Giants, after their win, Thursday, in this Oct. 1, 1971 file photo taken in Philadelphia, Pa. Ellis, who infamously claimed he pitched a no-hitter for Pittsburgh under the influence of LSD and later fiercely spoke out against drug and alcohol addiction, died
I wish I could see some snow. The way it muffles sound is so cool.
Yeah, and it makes everything look so pretty.
Vern, really enjoyed yesterday’s 41 & 42.
the teen and I are heading over the pass to grandma’s and grandpa’s house. Blue sky with snow out there now….should beat the storm. Not too many snowplows on this side of the Cascade so the roads are still covered in packed snow.
I love love love the snow and the soundless sound. the girls play and romp in it until their hairy paws turn in to large snow-packed balls. Gigi is the contrast – long black hair covered in the white flakes.
the nyt’s article on madoff is fascinating on so many levels.
better rouse the kid!
The last times I enjoyed snow were in Minneapolis and Leavenworth, WA. I do like it in its initial magical stages. NYC was great in the snow in those minutes before it got all dirty and slushy.

Singer-songwriter Teddy Thompson and Jude Rogers are set the task of writing the perfect Christmas song in less than an hour. What will they come up with?
I Won’t Kill You This Christmas
According to a recent report by a bipartisan religious freedom watchdog group, Iraq is one of the most dangerous places on earth for religious minorities.
Accusing Iraq’s government of tolerating severe abuses of religious freedom, the panel asked that Iraq be designated a “country of particular concern,” a status that would “encourage a robust policy response.”

Just got back from doing some romping around in the snow with the dogs at the park. It’s a little chilly out there today – 14 degrees at the moment, but there isn’t any wind and the sun is out, so it isn’t so bad. Tromping around in my snowshoes kept me quite warm, actually.
The official snowfall was 9.5 inches, though I think we got more like a foot at my house. A good little storm, but nothing too major. Another 3 to 7 inches tomorrow, they say.
Hands up everyone who saw this coming:

Hillbilly heroin. What a shock.
But maybe she was just holding for Rush!
OK, the Rick Warren thing is still pissing me off, but Obama also did something this week that I completely approve of!

Excellent choice. Hilda Solis is smart, feisty, passionate and devoted to the cause of working men and women.
Not to mention :hot: :hot: :hubba:
Hopefully she’ll be able to force her way on to Obama’s economic team, because he doesn’t seem particularly willing to give labor a seat at the table.
I don’t think she would have taken the post if she wasn’t sure she would be able to advocate effectively for labor, and I don’t think Obama would have offered it to her without knowing what he’s getting into.
And I doubt Hilda would have given up her House seat (and I’ll resist the temptation to make a remark about Hilda’s seat, even though I really want to) just to be a figurehead in Obama’s cabinet. I’m as enthused about this choice as I am uninspired about many of his others. Hopefully in six months I’ll feel the same way.
It’s nice to see O’Bama going out of his way to highlight appointinting scientific advisers. Maybe he will elevate Secretary of Evolution to a cabinet level.
Typical method of assassination for rethugs. Watch out Stephen Spoonemore! 😯 :tinfoil:
I’m not buying that story. If the plane was out of gas three miles from the airport, which sounds fishy in and of itself, there are a number of places an experienced pilot could have landed. Akron-Canton Airport is adjacent to I-77, so he could have put it down there if need be.
And he just happened to crash into a vacant house? Isn’t that convenient. No other casualties to require investigating. I know we’re in a foreclosure crisis, but Lake Township is a fairly pricey area and I doubt it would be overrun with vacancies.
Larisa Alexandrovna is an occasional guest on Thom Hartmann’s show, so maybe he’ll have her on soon to discuss this. If Karl Rove is going to murder his IT guy, he needs to not do it in my former neck of the woods.
Enough conspiracy theory. Time to :40:
#18 Al Franken, too. I’m thinking Wellstone. :tinfoil:
I’m listening to Tech Web Sound and a song is playing that perfectly encapsulates this year. The Growing Concern, “Hard Hard Year”
Nick Begich :tinfoil:
I love this song too. Another perfect song. The Mountain Goats
:tinfoil: indeed.
Nick Begich who went down with House Majority Leader Hale Boggs, father of Cokie the Hag :omg: and Warren Commission member.
:reaper:
I remember going into the woods outside of Portland when it was snowing and it was so quiet. Every noise was muffled due to the snow. It was a little creepy but cool.
You could hear the snow pattering onto the branches.
It’s snowing here, KP! (where are PJ’s snowflakes??)
