February seems to be shaping up as the month of collisions. First, two satellites collide in Earth orbit, which may or may not be responsible for the fireballs over Texas. Then a commuter plane slams into a house near Buffalo. Two nuclear subs – one British and one French – collide in the Atlantic. And now Heron has collided with the sidewalk (hope you’re feeling better today). Be careful out there folks.
A pretty good weekend, sports-wise here. Syracuse basketball hopefully put their typical mid-season slump behind them by beating Georgetown on Saturday. Sure, they blew a 16-point lead and had to go to OT, but it’s always good to beat G’town, no matter what. The SU lacrosse team opened up the defense of their national championship by thumping Providence 22-3, and the women’s team (ranked #2 in the country) began what will hopefully be a title run with a 21-4 win over Lemoyne. The only bad news was that my old High School – ranked #1 in New York State – had its 38-game winning streak ended. Oh well.
It’s President’s Day today, for whatever that’s worth. No mail delivery today, and the banks are closed, I think. I don’t have the day off, but I do earn a comp day to use later (like maybe when the weather’s warm again).
Well, time to get this Monday party started.
Heron, I hope you mend soon.
I’m going to celebrate Presidents Day by being grateful that Chimpy is no longer in charge.
Sorry to hear about your fall, Heron. :smack: :billcat: Apply vitamin E to the wound so it doesn’t scar.
John Scott: What the hell is going on with Randi?
Talk about your Groundhog Dayja vu all over again. Green 960 was the host of Randi’s ‘standup’ last year that ended her AAR program. They were also the first station to pick up her new show. I am wondering if RR might not be on there this afternoon, one way or the other.
My guess is that Randi did not bring Nova M the affiliates that they expected as didn’t Malloy and they are not making it up in Founders Club subscribers (a ridiculous concept) so they told her they needed contract concessions to carry on and she refused. Randi may be a mainstay in Progressive Talk but the dwindling number of outlets thanks in part to her ‘pals’ at Clear Channel just made things worse not to mention the possible impending collapse of satellite radio. Someone may have a better offer on the table but she may just think she can do just as well on her own.
Heron, hope it feels better today. I am guessing maybe not. I hope you have a day to relax and heal.
Mercifully not updated
Don’t forget to celebrate
Þorrablót
Here’s a helpful video to show you how to make “Svið” one of the dishes that are key to a successful meal.
http://www.icelandreview.com/icelandreview/upload/files/multimedia/multi-sheepheadjelly_16.02.09.wmv
The Thorrablot celebration starts with dinner. For the midwinter feast, Icelanders serve what was normal day-to-day food for Vikings, and turn back to nature-made food that was smoked, laid in mysa (a sour milk-product), salted, dried or kaestur (rotting and setting meat).
Hákarl (putrefied shark)
Blóðmör (filled sausage/black pudding)
Hrútspungur (ram’s scrotum with testicles)
Lundabaggi (sheep’s fat)
Svinasulta (jellied ham)
Svið (jellied sheep’s head)
Harðfiskur (bread spread made of fish)
Hangikjot (smoked lamb)
And don’t forget the schnappes :40:
Louie Bellson Dies at 84
🙁 :gate:
Maronic alert
Today’s BRL will be a replay and not a new Marc only show like the rest of the week is supposed to be. Maybe it will be the Friday show.
I could be wrong but I think today’s show is a pretaped extended interview with a film director (can’t remember the film, but it’s out now).
That’s too bad about Louie Bellson. :gate:
I didn’t know he was still alive. Great clip vernon.
I met him a few years ago with his lovely wife at a New Orleans by the Bay event down the Peneinsula. He did not exactly fit the NOLa/Louisiana theme but the producer was himself a drummer so he snuck him on the bill. I had connections with his label at the time so I introduced myself and ended up spending most of the day with this charming couple. His wife even sent me a note and I was still was getting occasional snail mailings on his appearances and their educational activities.
coool
Here’s a strange one…
Fears growing for missing Baker Street singer Gerry Rafferty
:fire: Feel better, Heron. Glad your hands are okay.

art, #5 is disgusting. :billcat:
Poor Randi. Nobody properly appreciates her greatness.
Maybe Randi is just taking some time off to look for Gerry Rafferty.
Cue Raphael Ravenscroft with the sax solo…
Most unbelievable deja vu-iness
It looks like Randi has once again lost her website and it smells funny. I can’t believe after the last time she did not retain ownership and control of the new one. This is very carny.
Wish I could edit that #10. #5 reminds me of Great Green Gobs…
checking in.. thanks all. Sore all around and have to pry my eye open with ice pack. I am not going out for a few days. 😳
re: #5
I’ve eaten everything except (I think) the ram’s testicles. You’d never know what you’re eating unless someone told you. When I first went to Iceland in 1974, the pickled shark was offered to me by my girlfriend’s dad as a test of my manliness. You have to down it with a shot of “Brennimin” which is a local liquor called ‘the black death’. It’s pretty awful.
I’ve clelebrated Þorrablót since then a few years ago and it’s all layed out as a buffet. You don’t ask what you’re eating, just sample everything and have some good wine.
My German grandfather made ‘head cheese’ from a pig and I’ve always liked ‘blood sausage’ gotten at any good deli so really, all our ancestors have eaten some pretty wierd stuff.
Heron- I don’t know what happened to you but hope you’re recovering okay.
vernon- what would you edit #10? I thought that was a really nice story. The biggest talents are accessible and keep it real.
Please don’t confuse the ice pack with the ice pick. If necessary, defer to the knitting needle.
CSPAN surveyed 65 presidential historians as to their rating of the presidents from best to worst:
1. Lincoln
2. Washington
3. FD Roosevelt
4. Teddy Roosevelt
5. Truman
6. Kennedy
7. Jefferson
8. Eisenhower
9. Wilson
10. Reagan
11. LB Johnson
12. Polk
13. Jackson
14. Monroe
15. Clinton
16. McKinley
17. John Adams
18. George HW Bush
19. John Quincy Adams
20. Madison
21. Cleveland
22. Ford
23. Grant
24. Taft
25. Carter
26. Coolidge
27. Nixon
28. Garfield
29. Taylor
30. Harrison
31. Van Buren
32. Arthur
33. Hayes
34. Hoover
35. Tyler
36. George W. Bush
37. Fillmore
38. Harding
39. WH Harrison
40. Pierce
41. A. Johnson
42. Buchanan
Chimpy was not the worst in the estimation but he comes in below Hoover.
Reagan top 10? Poppy Bush top 20? Dubya not at the bottom?
imho Harding Coolidge and Hoover – the rethug trifecta – should all be near the bottom along with the chimp man and Raygun.
Raygun is definitely rated too high. As for the 6 rated worse than Chimpy, if they really were worse I am very grateful that I didn’t have to live through their administrations.
Grant seems much too high as well. Wasn’t his administration plagued by scandal? Not to imply that anyone on this board was alive back then :), but maybe someone remembers their US history better than I do.
Reagan is waaaaaaaaaaaay too high, not to mention Chimpy, but both will probably descend over time as history looks on their reigns of terror less kindly than currently.
I heard someone today say that Grant is enjoying a bump from his connection to Lincoln. I am surprised at how high Kennedy is.
I think when the ranks of historians are augmented by Liberty and other institutes of faith-based education, maybe this can be changed and Reagan’s fall from the Top 10 avoided as they destroy the FDR legacy. They just need for the millions of the generation that lived during his time to gradually pass away.
Art, are any of those foods related to lutefisk? That sounds equally awful, but some Scandanavian midwesterners love it.
I still rank Dubya and Reagan as the lowest two. I’d rate FDR up top, above Lincoln, then Jefferson, Madison and John Adams. Carter is still too underrated, half of his problems were an uncooperative congress and dealmaking with the Iranians by GHWBush.
Lutefisk is pretty benign. Just salted fish that you soak in the water for awhile before cooking to dissipate the salt.
spent a lot of time as a kid learning to play a drum set listening to Louie Bellson.
one of my early musician heroes. i learned a lot from him.
technique and timing, wonderful rhythm.
RIP Louie, and thanks for
the good tunes.
