So, Michael Phelps takes a hit off a bong, and one of his sponsors – Kellogg – channels our nation’s uptight Puritan roots, and gives him the axe. Unfortunately for Kellogg, some of its best customers are stoners (rather predictable, if you ask me; they must account for at least 90% of the adult Rice Krispies® treats consumption), who organized a boycott of Kellogg products that was so effective that, when you call the company hotline, you get a recording – not about the salmonella outbreak – but a message regarding the decision to drop Phelps. And now the Kellogg reputation seems to have taken a hit from the affair. A company that monitors over 5,000 companies had Kellogg at #9 before they gave Phelps the boot – and #83 afterward. Far out, man.
Time to just make pot legal, and start to put an end to our long national nightmare of alcoholism. Especially at the price of beer these days.
I confess I didn’t watch the President’s speech last night (I actually was pretty beat and went to bed way early, though had I been up, I’d have most likely been watching SU kick the crap out of St. John’s, giving Jim Boeheim an NCAA record 31 20-win seasons; not something anybody outside of CNY cares about, I know, but at least I have it on the DVR). By all accounts, the speech went over very well. Lots of applause and ovations of the standing type and hope oozing out all over. And Obama got to suck a little face with Hillary. Not sure who got a bigger thrill out of that.
As for the rebuttal by LA Governor Bobby Jindal (what, now we’re outsourcing our Governor’s jobs to India, too?), well, that didn’t go over so well. Apparently everybody thought he sucked, with both Republicans and Democrats alike characterizing his speech as “amateurish,” “laughable” and “a missed opportunity.” Oooh, Democrats want to build modern, high-speed rail in this country. How horrible! Schmuck. Hopefully he’ll be the one looking for an extension of unemployment benefits soon.
And, just to show that stupidity and assholiness aren’t limited to Republicans (though there may be a bit of a geographic correlation), now TN Gov Phil Bredesen says he might not take Federal money for unemployment benefits either. And chickenman GA Gov Sonny Perdue is yammering away over it, too. Seems they’re terrified that the benefits might become “permanent.” As if they can’t just ram legislation through any time they want. Hopefully Obama will side with Chuck Schumer, that they can either take the money – all of it – or leave it. We can use it up here in NY if these idiots don’t want it.
Supposed to warm up and be sunny here. A good day for you single guys to rub some ashes on your forehead and try and pick up Catholic chicks (turning Ash Wednesday into a genuine Hump Day).
Good luck!
It looked as if Bobby Jindal got coached by the tag-team of Kathie Lee Gifford and Fred Rogers.
It isn’t often that I think anything Chris “Tweety” Matthews says is accurate, but his evaluation of Jindal was that he wasn’t impressive and was angling to attract the wingnut crowd of the GOP. When MSNBC cut to the Jindal speech someone, maybe Tweety, said , “Oh god!”
The idea that governors will reject the unemployment benefits is very interesting. Will their unemployed voters reward them with another term? Really, whom is such monetary stinginess designed to impress?
I have to admit that my recent trip south has not given me a great impression of southern savvy, but I can’t believe laid off southerners and their families will be applauding the fiscal policy that denies them assistance.
Jindal had but one idea…tax cuts. Is there anyone, beside a wingnut, who still believes they are a good idea?
A federal agency is investigating concerns about drywall manufactured in China that has been blamed for a foul odor and corrosion of metal components in some Florida homes.
For about a month, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has been looking into whether the sulfur compounds emitted from the drywall are corroding household components and causing a possible safety risk, said Joe Martyak, spokesman for the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Drywall that smells and rots the the chandelier, how multitasking of it!
The overwhelming majority of Texas schools use scare tactics and spread myths in place of teaching basic sex and health information that students can use to protect themselves and others, according to a report released Wednesday by watchdog group Texas Freedom Network.

Texas continues to have one of the nation’s highest teen pregnancy rates despite receiving more federal abstinence funding than any other state.
“I thought I was no longer capable of being surprised by the ignorance among our students,” Wiley wrote in the report. “Then last year a sincere male student asked aloud, ‘What is my risk for cervical cancer?’ Clearly, ignorance surrounding sexuality and health is a problem among young people today.”

Ooh, I was right. It was Tweety muttering “Oh god.” From Huffpo:
During today’s Hardball, Chris Matthews will address the moment last night when a live mic caught him muttering “Oh, God,” as Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal came out to deliver the GOP rebuttal to President Obama’s address.
Here’s a bit of what Matthews will say, according to an NBC spokesperson:
I was taken aback by that peculiar stagecraft, the walking from somewhere in the back of this narrow hall, this winding staircase looming there, the odd anti-bellum [sic] look of the scene. Was this some mimicking of a president walking along the state floor to the East Room?
When it was announced last week that CBS News had hired Jeff Ballabon as a senior vice president for communications, with responsibility for “all media relations and public affairs,” there were scattered complaints about Ballabon’s extreme conservatism and apparent bias against Democrats.

However, what has not been widely noted is that Ballabon formerly had a close relationship with lobbyist and convicted felon Jack Abramoff, first as a client and then seemingly as a friend.

There’s that liberal media, again.
Tweety shouldn’t apologize for “oh my god” last night. It was probably the most intelligent thing I’ve ever heard him say. From what I understand, the Fox pundits were falling all over themselves today to criticize Jindal.
And what was up with that set? I expected him to walk out and hand someone a rose like he was The Bachelor or something.
I thought he was going for a scene from Gone With The Wind and frankly I didn’t give a damn.
