The “stimulus” money has hit the streets, so it’s time to get out there and spend it. I’m hoping that the proposed high-speed rail system becomes a reality, since it really seems it’s about time.
Otherwise, another day of below-average temperatures here, but it’s supposed to warm up and be in the 50’s before you know it (also the case with me, though I’m not quite as excited about that).
Have a good hump day.
Bernie Sanders wants Ben Bernanke to name names (on missing $2 Tril.)
What you cannot measure you cannot control. And that is why we have to analyze this stuff by our lonesome. The corporatocracy will never lift a finger to help.
Here we go. :fustrate:
It’s hard to imagine the US investing heavily in high-speed rail. I had a math professor talk about the Japanese and their bullet trains, and why there aren’t any here in the US. One problem for sure is that all the engineers smoke pot (maybe that’s not a problem) and text on the job, there’s often flooding and landslides to disrupt travel. At the very least there should be more tilting trains.
good luck Kristapea.
hey travis, good to see you posting.
trust me, ANY improvement in public transport is good.
had a chance to ride the new high speed trains in LA. fast and inexpensive, loved em.
Send Rush an apology.
This morning, the first teacher I work with asked if I knew that yesterday was Square Root day and thanks to PJ, I could answer yes.
However, PJ, you have ruined my week now that I know we’re going to set the clocks ahead this weekend. Just as the sun was finally coming up early enough for me not to have to get up to darkness, I will once again be plunged into the despair of waking up at night.
KP, honeymoons with jobs have the lifespan of a butterfly. However, having a job is pretty nice right now.
In one of the most important business cases in years, the Supreme Court on Wednesday ruled that a drug company is not protected from injury claims in state court merely because the federal government had approved the products and its labeling.
The 6-to-3 ruling went in favor of a Vermont woman, a musician, who was awarded more than $6 million after losing much of her arm following a botched injection of an anti-nausea drug. It was a defeat for the Wyeth pharmaceutical company, which had asked the justices to throw out the award, and by extension other companies that might have pursued Wyeth’s line of argument in similar cases.

The justices who sided with Ms. Levine on Wednesday said that “Wyeth could have unilaterally added a stronger warning about IV-push administration†without running afoul of federal regulations. Justices Anthony M. Kennedy, David H. Souter, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen G. Breyer joined Justice Stevens, while Justice Clarence Thomas filed an opinion concurring in the overall judgment.
Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. wrote a dissent declaring, “This case illustrates that tragic facts make bad law.†Joining him with Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. and Justice Antonin Scalia.

Some interesting shots from Lincoln, today.
The world turns on a dime. That girl I had a slight attachment to is a bit of a headcase. She showed up to class before the official start time and acted a bit strange, saying that it was her birthday and that she shouldn’t be in class. And our plans to “study” were superseded by her emotional urge the flee. I don’t know if it is me, the class material or her life in general that caused this episode, but I really need to keep my mental attachments locked on to something stable.
I have studying in quotes because it’s very difficult to study in tandem efficiently, so I doubt that any of that will happen. It’s a nice guise to get to know someone better, though.
Well, as Todd Rundgren once said, “they may be stupid but they sure are fun.”
I was thinking along those lines. I thought I would be a force of good and help a damsel in distress and whatnot, but…there’s another side to the coin, someone who sits on the other side of me that might be mellow and have her head screwed in the right way. She’s having trouble keeping pace, too, in the class, so maybe I can point her through the endless minutiae to the heart of the logic beast.
I really shouldn’t be receptive to anyone who calls me dude. Maybe that’s an unreasonable standard, I don’t know. I’ll have to think about that more.
I dunno, Sue. I get up at about 5:30, but I don’t much care how light it is outside while I’m taking a shower (and it could be high noon, but I wouldn’t know it until after coffee when my eyes open up).
Up here on Monday, with DST, civil twilight begins at 6:58 a.m., and sunrise is at 7:27 a.m.(which is about the time I leave the house, though I’m very fortunate in that I leave at that time and am at my desk by 7:30). But the huge thing for me is that sunset Monday will be at 7:04 p.m (a full three hours after I get out of work!), with civil twilight lasting until 7:32 p.m.
Lots of time to get the doggies out to the park!
Nothing wrong with a three-way (study session, that is).
Kind of an étudier la trois.
:rofl2: That made me laugh.
I actually prefer going to work in the dark. It feels more subversive, like I’m sneaking in or something.
Not to mention staying light out longer. It sucks that it’s completely dark already by the time Jeopardy comes on.
Neither of these statements was especially profound, but that’s OK.
Krista, don’t worry about the honeymoon being over. I’m sure your employer will be happy to fuck you on a regular basis. I know mine fucks me at least two or three times every week.
In an agreement reached today between the former Bush Administration and Congressman John Conyers, Jr. (D-Mich.), Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Karl Rove and former White House Counsel Harriet Miers will testify before the House Judiciary Committee in transcribed depositions under penalty of perjury. The Committee has also reserved the right to have public testimony from Rove and Miers. It was agreed that invocations of official privileges would be significantly limited.
In addition, if the Committee uncovers information necessitating his testimony, the Committee will also have the right to depose William Kelley, a former White House lawyer who played a role in the U.S. Attorney firings.
The Committee will also receive Bush White House documents relevant to this inquiry. Under the agreement, the landmark ruling by Judge John Bates rejecting key Bush White House claims of executive immunity and privilege will be preserved. If the agreement is breached, the Committee can resume the litigation.

eya travis,
i think she was suggesting you might like to join her in ‘fleeing’. she may have been disappointed when you did’nt take the hint.
?
sometimes a release from stress opens up progressive development situation. wish her a happy birthday from us and present her with some celebratory flowers.
Wholly crap!
Whoa! What the fuck? I’m not trained in the art of subtlety, but I can discern a pan in the fuckin’ face when it happens. I don’t believe that was the case, Jim. I’ll stick with the mild mannered,”Hi” or “How’s it going” the next time I have an encounter and leave the flowers for the herbivores. Updates to come.
I was about a smidge from presenting a token of friendship for her birthday, but the weirdness got in the way (I actually contemplated whether or not she had been drinking) I’ve lost my enthusiasm for any kind of exploration in that endeavor.

Im sure Granny’s already heard about this.
I wish he’d get some lube! :smack: :spank:
might have taken all her courage to talk with ya
i find being tolerant of others earns me tolerance when i need it.
you can very seldom go wrong with understanding and kindness always a wise choice.
Yeah, that’s true. I have a horrendous time with keeping my ego afloat and facing fear. I’m sure others are in the same boat. The class is nightmare for some students. I think mostly because the instructor is so awful. Numbers are a big problem during class. The instructor will be writing a sequence of steps on the chalk board and write the wrong numbers, or point and say, “that one” instead of identify explicitly the actual number. Having to translate Russian to English is tough I’m sure, but it is really a burden for students paying for that mess. Any time a question is asked during class the instructors replay is, “The story is…” I hear that at least five times a day.
The plot may thicken tomorrow.
Thanks RG :peace:
When I was in engineering school(man! that seems so long ago now) I would ask questions that probably seemed stupid to the teacher and other, more left brained oriented students. But, I’m a smarty pants student and always did well in school. (not so much in life) So, maybe this girl is more right brained than left brained and just simply sees things differently. I, generally have a hard time meshing with society in general, the corporate society, the main stream society etc….. :fire:
I totally understand having irrational fears. I may have a dash of Aspeger’s for all I know, which I don’t. (Ok. I don’t. I made that up)
I heard recently on the BBC that women and men come to generally the same conclusions from the same problems but through differing paths of the brain.

re-#20 That’s sad news that Malloy’s off the air. I stopped paying for Nova M about six months ago. I couldn’t afford to support that and AAR. Of course now that Rachel is on AAR in name only and Hartmann left, I find it ironic that the only talents left are available for free 😯
I never did like Randi and I just don’t need the gut twisting of Malloy but appreciate what he brings. I hope he stays on the air in some form.
Never been a big Mally fan, but, it’s sad he off. “On Second Thought” is a really bad name for a radio station. Sounds uncertain enough that the rethugs could make fun of.
You probably know where my head’s at since I repeat it so often.
Maron above all else. I hope he gets a show. I don’t see it happening.
I am sorry about Malloy. I could still listen to him given the opportunity. He will have a hard time ‘self-syndicating’. I am afraid he will have a tough time finding a syndicator as well. I don’t think any of our heroes be they Maron, Seder, Rhodes, Malloy, Farias, etc have a lot of traction right now in bigboy radioland.
Call me crazy but I still hope AA
RM might make a run at this thing.
