Ah, Memorial Day, when politicians pretend to honor the sacrifices of our men and women in uniform, and then continue to treat them like the disposable pawns of global corporate interests. Never mind not sending them to their deaths halfway around the world for no good reason, and forget about giving them the proper equipment to keep them as safe as possible. We aren’t even willing to give them shower facilities that won’t electrocute them (note to the no-bid contractors out there: electricity and water is not a good mix).
Memorial Day is also the day when those of us who haven’t lost any loved ones in the military have barbecues, plant flowers, maybe visit the graves of our parents, catch a fighter jet flyover or two (this will be the last year for that here, as our National Guard unit will soon be trading in its F-16s for unmanned drones), and basically kick back and enjoy a day off. Oh, and watch the NCAA Division I lacrosse championship game, of course.
Just in case you didn’t think the “Democrats” suck, Nebraska Senator Ben Nelson (a “Democrat”) threatened to join the Republicans in filibustering “Democratic” President Obama’s Supreme Court pick (uh, when he actually picks somebody). Pretty funny shit, huh?
I find it rather ironic, personally. You may recall that, during the Alito nomination process, Obama was pressured into voting against cloture, though before the vote he declared that it was a bad idea, wouldn’t work, and he would vote for cloture in any subsequent vote. Now his own party is threatening him with a filibuster to be certain he doesn’t nominate a progressive. Not that he will, of course. He’ll appoint some middle of the road “safe” pick that will be vilified by the Republicans and their media lackeys as a godless Communist, and then turn around and bit us all in the ass after her confirmation.
This is why Harry Reid has to go. He’s a worthless piece of crap, and needs to be replaced. The Democrats need a Majority Leader that will run the Senate with an iron fist. Ben Nelson’s office should be moved to a janitor’s closet in the basement of the Senate Office Building.
But, that won’t happen. Not with spineless Harry at the con.
Oh well, have a happy Memorial Day. And let’s go Orange!
“then continue to treat them like pawns of corporate interestsâ€
Don’t they continue to treat us all like the pawns of corporate interest?
(with all sincere respect for the men and women much braver than I who have sacrificed their lives and family’s in order that EXXON show profits of billions every quarter)
Memorial Day weekend is almost over. I’ve spent these last 4 days looking for ticks. They are so numerous this year that a walk in the back yard has become a guarantee of picking up at lest 2 of them. I haven’t found any on Lola or Emily, both of whom have been treated with Frontline, but my daughter’s 115 pound chihuahua was a magnet for them.
Much as I hate to do it, I’m going to spray the yards. Shelter Island is famed for it Lyme Disease carrying ticks.
The Watergate break-in eventually forced a presidential resignation and turned two Washington Post reporters into pop-culture heroes. But almost 37 years after the break-in, two former New York Times journalists have stepped forward to say that The Times had the scandal nearly in its grasp before The Post did — and let it slip.
Robert M. Smith, a former Times reporter, says that two months after the burglary, over lunch at a Washington restaurant, the acting director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, L. Patrick Gray, disclosed explosive aspects of the case, including the culpability of the former attorney general, John Mitchell, and hinted at White House involvement.

It’s interesting that 2 FBI men, Mark Felt and L. Patrick Grey were leaking stories about Tricky Dick to the newspapers. Of course there’s nothing new about Rethug attorneys general being involved in undermining the rule of law for the sake of other Rethugs.
The Timesonline from the UK is writing about the ridiculous terrorist plots to blow up two synagogues and the one to blow up a pipeline at the JFK airport. Apparently, no US newspaper is prepared to note how stupid, time and manpower wasting these “plots” are.

Rudy and his wife Judi were strolling in the Hamptons this weekend and got into an altercation with a gentleman who thinks Rudy is a bully. The man was arrested and there are now several versions of the story.
Here’s the arrestee’s version:
I am the alleged crazed John W. McCluskey who “tried to attack” sweet Rudy Gulianno “out for a stroll” in Bridgehampton. The fact is that while crossing the street I simply informed Rudy of my contempt for his sleazy bullying tactics for most of his prosecutorial life. I pointed out he would gladly prosecute and persecute the innocent as well as the guilty if it gained him publicity.
He became irate and angry and threatened to beat me up for daring to express my opinion. He flew into a rage in the middle of the street using the foulest of language and threatened to kick my ass.His wife tried to calm him down but he continued his ranting’s. Of course he proved my point by having me arrested for speaking irreverently to his royal nothingness. He’s a true egomaniac and a bully who can hand it out but can’t take.
The NYC tabloids had a different slant on the situation and Judi was overheard being Judi. There was no mention of 9/11, a first for the Giulianis.
