Holy shit, halfway through June already. The snow will be flying before you know it. Things are a mess in Iran. You have to give them credit – people in this country barely seem to notice (or care) when our elections are stolen. Here in NYS, we no longer have a State government, which has been more or less shut down. They don’t actually seem to be in session all that much anyway, so we’ve barely noticed. As long as I keep getting paid, I guess I don’t really care. Oh well, time for work, I guess.
I think we’re safer when the NYS legislature isn’t in session, gathering favors while they screw everything up and screw us, too.
The assembly is supposed to vote, today, to reauthorize mayoral control of the schools, by which Bloomie (with an assist from Bushco) has turned every school and every grade into a test prep mill. With luck, the state senators will not be able to find the key so they can rubbber stamp the deal.
Bloomie’s schtick is to claim that because he’s a billionaire and self funds his campaigns, he is beholden to no one. In reality we have a mayor beholden only to his own self interest, with the ability to grease a lot of palms to get what he wants.
The 2 NY turn-coats, Espada and Monserrate, relaxed this weekend, and spent a bit of their ill gotten gains:
Even with the mess on the minds of many, the two men at the center of the controversy decided that they would make a public venture to the Subway Series game featuring both New York City teams – the Mets and Yankees.
And they did so in style.
Senators Pedro Espada Jr. and Hiram Monserrate sat in the Legends Suite section of Yankee Stadium, which are the high-priced seats right on the field. If you try purchasing those tickets online, they run between $525 to $2,625 (it probably depends on the day of the week or the opponent the Yankees are playing) each. Espada claimed in the New York Daily News piece that he paid $150 each for them, a nice bargain

It’s pretty amazing to watch the youtube videos and read the twitter reports from Iran. People getting their own news out to the world.
(art, glad you guys missed the twisters.)
Thanks OKat. There were a couple more today- destroyed a 100 yr old barn.
I couldn’t stop watching the updates from Iran yesterday. Students live and under fire. That we all should’a,could’a shown such courage in 2000 and 2004 🙁
Senator Hiram Monserrate, one of two Democrats who initially sided with Republicans to give them a 32-to-30 majority, has switched his allegiances again and plans to reaffirm himself as a member of the Democratic caucus, two people close to Mr. Monserrate said on Monday morning.

If each side has 31 members, that means neither the Democrats or Republicans would have the 32 votes necessary to change the Senate’s leadership structure. Ordinarily the lieutenant governor would cast a tiebreaking vote, but that position has been vacant since David A. Paterson replaced Eliot Spitzer as governor in March 2008.

This must be the NYS government’s version of bread and circuses. It’s certainly fun to watch, unfortunately some things need to be done by these clowns.
Tis twister season, but Colorado?
Who would subject their baby to this (other than the 6 parents of these babies)?
From rolling cheese in Gloucestershire to wife-carrying in Scandinavia, the world is full of quirky, colourful – and downright bizarre – events. They may not be to everyone’s taste, but here is a selection of some of the unusual festivals you can find around the world this year:
