This just in: Michael Jackson is still dead.
I think all you celebrities need to lay low for the rest of this month. It’s dangerous out there. I saw on the teevee that vigils are being held worldwide for the beloved Michael Jackson. OK, I guess. I feel bad for the guy, but never really got the appeal (to me, he peaked with “Ben”). I mean, it’s not like John Lennon just got shot. One mourner outside Jackon’s LA residence (who didn’t even bother to take the cell phone out of her ear while being interviewed) said, “my goodness, it’s just like a modern day Elvis Presley dying.” Uh, I know Elvis died a while ago, but I’m pretty sure 1977 still counts as the “modern day.”
I suppose it’s just a generational thing (although MJ was two years older than I am). Music, to me, doesn’t involve hopping around and grabbing your crotch. I prefer sitting on the couch and grabbing my crotch. But, to each his own. A shame he had to upstage Farrah, though.
Speaking of music, it’s Jazzfest weekend, which is always a pretty big deal around here (especially since it’s free). In addition to all the local acts, Randy Brecker’s in town (without his brother Walter, who, sadly, passed away from leukemia back in 2007 – just wanted to keep the whole death theme going). Randy is actually playing with two groups here this weekend: the Randy Brecker / Bill Evans Soulbop Band and The West Coast / East Coast Dream Band. Spyro Gyra is here as well (they were a bar band in Buffalo while I was at UB). I won’t bore you with the full lineup, though if you’re interested, you can look here.
Lucky you, out there in Minnesota, as you’ll be seeing one of our favorite basketball players of all time next season. The Timberwolves selected Jonny Flynn #6 in last night’s NBA draft. Though they picked another point guard – Ricky Rubio – #5, so perhaps there’s a trade in the works somewhere. Jonny just seems like a great kid, was a lot of fun to watch (though I wish he’d stuck around another couple years), and was a real iron man. He averaged 38 minutes a game (out of 40) in two years here, and played 67 out of 70 minutes in last year’s 6-OT marathon game.
I’m glad it’s finally Friday. This has been a long week. Let’s get it over with.
Since the digital TV radio transition occurred, my radio TV tuner went dead and I can no longer give everyone reports on what story Matt Lauer is leading with this morning on Today.
I assume the lead story today is about the Goldman boy custody case with Brazil.
sorry … 😉
PJ,
I watch our Wolvies occasionally.
Though things haven’t been the same since we lost our superstar Kevin.
Who was that you say?
Yes, we lost our excellent play-by-play guy Kevin Harlan several years ago to a bigger market.
No more over-the-top booming statements that we can call our own.
“there goes
KGLeBron, with no regard for human life !!!”I do miss being able to hear statements like:
“Flynn-again, in again !!!”
The NBA is nothing w/o overwrought melodrama.
Here’s another Harlan classic. The Wolvies had this utility player named Sam Mitchell.
“Sam I am, GREEN EGGS AND HAM! brings the Timberwolves within one!”
I’m same age as PJ. Growing up in Minneapolis, I was more intrigued by local boy-wonder Prince. I caught the spin of his first record on the free-form station late at night, and a few years later couldn’t figure out why MJ was so tame/lame.
Prince also seems to be a better example of healthy living through B-Ball and church of the LDS :pope: Too short for the NBA though.
Last night the coverage of MJ’s demise was ubiquitous and continuous and, IMHO, ridiculous. True, I’m too old to be an MJ groupie but really, what was there to report? Matthews, Olberman and Schultz were all devoted to the event, as was every other channel.
One might think that a 24 hour news cycle would lead to a quest for news. Instead it is a quest to fill up the time with as little content, as cheaply gathered, as possible.
There oughta be a law!
Cable “news” shows (and most of the network fare these days, unfortunately) are first and foremost freak shows. And there’s really no better poster child for freaks than what MJ had become.
I reckon it’s easy to be driven to insanity when you have relatively unlimited supplies of money, attention, and adulation. It drove Elvis nuts, that’s for sure.
I’d be willing to do some personal research into it. I don’t even need the attention or adulation.
Capitol Confidential says there’s an agreement in the works to get the NYS senate back to work:
Senate leaders are nearing a power-sharing accord to allow the chamber to move forward, according to a source close to the negotiations. The agreement would be in effect through 2010.
There are a few remaining items left for the principals to agree on, but the leadership question seems to have been resolved. The lineup:
President pro tempore: Democratic Sen. Malcolm Smith
Senate majority leader: Republican Sen. Dean Skelos
Vice-president pro tempore: Democratic Sen. Pedro Espada
Democratic conference leader: Democratic Sen. John Sampson
According to the source, the challenge now is convincing the fractured Democratic conference to go along with this agreement, which would maintain Smith as the top Democrat in the Senate chamber.

This “deal” leaves slime ball Espada in line for governor, keeping alive the long tradition of making a bad governor look better when compared to his possible successor.
Last NBA game I saw was a T’Wolves game and went with a Best Buy exec who’s wife worked for late Twins owner Carl Pohlad so we sat in the row behind the b’cast table right behind http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_Jam_and_Terry_Lewis who all of the Timberwolves Dance Team seemed to be auditioning for personally :hubba: .
Someone said Jesse was up behind the basket and I was looking for an African-American guy but there were none to be seen. Then they said he was wearing a white hat but alas still no Jesse Jackson. Then I figured out the guy I did see in a white hat was Jesse Ventura and I had much better seats.
When I tried to watch all of the MSNBC shows online it looked like they were preempted. Still does since the Sanford stuff from Wednesday is mostly still up.
Never really been much of an NBA fan. I liked the 76’ers when I was younger (when they had Dr. J and Darrel Dawkins), probably because they were originally the – you guessed it – Syracuse Nationals.
But when you play 82 games in the regular season, any one game just doesn’t seem to mean that much. When you play so many regular season games and only eliminate less than half the teams, it seems kinda lame to me. NHL, too.
At least baseball used to eliminate all but 4 teams after 162 games. Now they’re up to 8, I guess, but that’s still a lot better than letting more than half the league in.
Of course, now that Minnesota has Jonny Flynn and Etan Thomas, I may just have to be a Timberwolves fan.
Hmm. Sounds like Minnesota isn’t good enough for Rubio.
Well, he’s really ingratiating himself to the fans, isn’t he?
Compare that to what Jonny had to say:
With all my angst over MJ and Sanford, I’d forgotten all about this.
Thanks for the email PJ, I think I’ll give it a shot.
Randy Brecker’s brother was named Michael, wasn’t he? Or is Walter a third Brecker brother? Apparently I’m not as much of a Breckerhead as I should be.
And Prince isn’t LDS. He’s Jehovah Witness. I read a story several years ago about a woman in Minneapolis who was watching a Vikings game on a Sunday afternoon when her doorbell rang. It was Prince and Larry Graham passing out literature.
Man, that would be weird, especially since Larry has been my favorite bass player since I heard my first Sly Stone record as a tot.
Oops, you’re right. I conflated Michael Brecker with Walt Weiskopf, who plays sax with Donald Fagen’s jazz band – and Steely Dan these days, too (and who I went to high school with).
I think my little brain worked it out this way: Randy Brecker>Michael Brecker>Steely Dan>Donald Fagen>Walt Weiskopf>Walter Brecker.
Not to mention
I thought Walt Weiskopf was the shortstop for the Royals in the seventies. ! :billcat:
You’d think this was an old headline, but, alas, it’s a new one.
White House Drafts Executive Order To Allow Indefinite Detention Of Terror Suspects
Sorry, I’m thinking of Walt Weiss who ended his career here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walt_Weiss
You think Maher is a little sad about being off these next few weeks?
From The Union of Concerned Scientists:
Moments ago, the House of Representatives took a historic vote to pass comprehensive climate legislation that would put in place a nationwide plan to rein in global warming pollution and create an entirely new, cleaner approach to our nation’s energy system.
This legislation does not include everything we wanted—nor did we expect it would—but it establishes a critical first step in building the foundation to rein in global warming pollution, reduce our dependence on oil, and transition to a clean energy economy.
What’s more, in a clear victory for science, the bill includes key provisions ensuring these policies can be strengthened in the future in response to emerging climate science

20 people were blown up in Iraq today by suicide bombers on motorcycles.
A middle-aged couple in Iran was forbidden by religously insane mullahs to mourn the murder of their daughter in the street by government controlled militia.
A total of 20 plus minutes of a thirty minute NBC newscast was devoted to a sad mentally ill pop star.
26 seconds was spent reporting on the news coming out of the Mid-East
perhaps I should be embarrassed by the LDS / Jehova’s Witness mix up …. but I’m not. It’s all laughable.
Whenever I am out biking and see two other bicyclists wearing their Sunday best, I scream out M O R M O N S !!!!
They both show up at your door all dressed up giving out their lit shit. Came to my door once at 8:30 on a Saturday morning so I did not feel the need to cover myself when I decided to answer. I was more of a Rev. Ike guy anyway. I truly believe that the lack of money is the root all evil.
:boobs: :spank:
Ed McMahon
🙁 :gate:
And Randy Brecker was part of the original (the good) Blood Sweat and Tears
