Somebody wrote a letter to the editor here, suggesting that parents have their kids dress up as biblical character to offset the pagan influence of Halloween. He wrote that Halloween “…has become a superstitious and empty way of imposing mindless triviality.” Funny, that sounds more like religion than trick-or-treating to me. He also writes that those who celebrate Halloween “are in reality celebrating death….” Unlike Good Friday, I guess. In the comments, one person suggested that adults dress up like priests and chase the little boys around. I thought maybe I’d dress up like Jesus (got the beard, but I think I look to Irish; if Jesus had been Irish, they’d have had beer instead of wine at the Last Supper) and bring a big bag of stones, which I would toss at people who are, themselves, with sin, yet cast aspersions on others. I’d need an awful lot of rocks, though.
Todd Chuck checking in from Minnie Soda. How are things in Cyrus Cruise?
Meredith says that since the stock market is up 200 points, we are out of the recession.
Good to know that brilliant minds are at work.
You realize, pj, that if you dress up like Jesus, Maron will accuse you of stealing his schtick.
Oh, I think the Jesus schtick is in the public domain by now.
It’s funny to hear the AM sports blabbers talk about how the Nuggets haven’t improved cause they didn’t sign any big name players like Artest with the Lakers or Andre Miller with Portland.(Despite going to the Western Division Finals last season).
They also diss Melo cause he’s not the team leader (that title belongs to popular home-boy former Detroit bad boy), Chauncy Billups.
Meanwhile, Melo poured 41 points on top of fovored division-winner Portland last night and the night before, Ty Lawson, rookie point-guard, scored 17 in his first NBA game.
Maybe all that Nuggets heat will help to melt the 22 inches of snow here at our house. Actually, I’m waiting for a huge drift on our roof to fall down because now I’m afraid to go out and retreive our trash bin in the alley . I might become an avalanche victim. :tinfoil: :cold:
Yeah, I saw a story in the Denver Post the other day with the headline, “Billups, Nuggets begin quest for NBA title,” that said if the Nuggets were gonna win the NBA Championship, it would be because of Billups being “Elway” or something. I thought, “really?” I mean, no offense to the Nuggets, but didn’t they kinda suck before Melo got there? And, Billups? Really? I mean, he’s been around a while, so I see the Elway comparison, but I think his career average is like 15 points or something.
I think there’s just a bias against SU guys.
I don’t the folks in Minneapolis are missing Ricky Rubio (yet), either.
I’ll admit, I had to look up Ricky Rubio and still don’t understand everything except he’s happy in Spain.
Chauncy was the last (and perhaps the last ever) star Buffs basketball player who made it to the NBA but he kind of sucked until he went to Detroit.
Despite his 15 point average or whatever it is, he really has more to do with the Nuggets success the last couple year’s than George Karl. I don’t know how much you get to see the Nuggets play (except when they’re playing the Knicks or the Nets) but just watching him, he’s definently the floor leader. Melo acknowledges that it’s Chauncy’s team, especially on defense.
The Elway comparison isn’t too far off.
Jon Stewart does it best!

And yeah, the Nuggets sucked ever since Doug Moe left and until Melo landed. They really turned it around after we traded Iverson.

I don’t really ever see the Nuggets play, but I’m sure Billups is better for the team than Iverson. Truth be told, I find the NBA kind of dull. When you play 82 games, you ought to eliminate more than three teams (an exaggeration, but, whatever it is) from the playoffs. I like college ball better. It seems to have more emotion. Of course, had the Syracuse Nats not moved to Philly, I’d be an NBA fan. 😉
Did I ever mention that we invented the 24 second shot clock and saved the NBA? No doubt, I have (too many times). 🙂
A sad Nuggets-related story is that Dan Issel went bankrupt this summer raising and betting on horse races and has had to auction off all of his worldly possesions including championship rings and jerseys. After a great career in the early ABA, then a Nugget player and coach, he’s got nothing. I assume they let him keep his false front teeth. 🙁
Even Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina acknowledges that its timing on two recent mailings was unfortunate.
The News&Observer of Raleigh reported that customers first learned their rates will rise by an average of 11 percent next year.
Then they got a flier urging them to send an enclosed preprinted, postage-paid note to Sen. Kay Hagan denouncing what the company says is unfair competition that would be imposed by a government-backed insurance plan. Congress is likely to consider that public option as it debates the health care overhaul.
“No matter what you call it, if the federal government intervenes in the private health insurance market, it’s a slippery slope to a single-payer system,” the BCBS flier read. “Who wants that?”
Indignant Blue Cross customers, complaining that their premium dollars are funding the campaign, have called Hagan’s office to voice support for a public option. They’ve marked through the Blue Cross message on their postcards and changed it to show they support the public option, then mailed the cards.

Someone pointed out that college ball is hard to follow because if you’re really good, like Melo, you’re only there a year or two. I’ve really gotten back into roundball because Melo, KMart, J R Smith, Nene and Chauncy are so entertaining to watch. They’ve always got a chance to win.
That said, even the Nuggets can’t make watching Tim Duncan play entertaining.
Yeah, the 24 second shot clock has been mentioned a few times. Didn’t know about saving the NBA
Yeah, it’s kinda too bad that kids are allowed to go to the NBA after a year or two – or even straight from high school. I can’t blame them for taking the money, but I think it’d do them good to grow up a bit before they had more money than god. Plus there’s nothing in life quite like being young and in your prime in college (especially if you’re a sports hero, though I can only guess at that), and you’ll never get that back again.
Still, making a few million dollars a year would probably make up for it (though if I’d had that much money at 20, I’d have been dead by 25).
Pro basketball, my favorite sport by a long shot.
Changing the subject, Meredith’s rosy outlook has probably changed to mud after the stock market tanked today. They should just go ahead and make the Today Show 24 hours long.
back to b-ball.
