So, I was looking at the Huffington Post last night, and there was a headline that read “Starr’s Ex-Stripper Wife Allegedly Profited From Ponzi Scheme“, and I thought, “Barbara Bach used to be a stripper?” But no, wrong Starr. Turns out it’s Kenneth Starr. And I thought, “holy shit! Ken Starr’s wife used to be a stripper, and now she’s involved in a Ponzi scheme? And then I saw another story that said Ken Starr was arrested for fraud and hid in the closet when they went to arrest him. Wow. I mean, I always kinda figured he was in the closet, but I had no idea about the fraud stuff. But, no, turns out it’s a different Ken Starr. Who knew? Here I thought one Ken Starr in the world was one too many, and now there are two.
So then I’m clicking around the Internets, and I’m reading this thing over at the Wonk Room about how this oil well blowout in the Gulf of Mexico is actually a pretty routine thing that’s happened 39 times since 2007 (I don’t recall seeing any of those on the Today Show, do you?), and how BP isn’t exactly this “environmentally friendly” oil company it’s been made out to be. And the Wonk Room ends their post with:
But this event is yet another tragic reminder of the truth of George Santana’s dire maxim: “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.â€
And I thought, “holy shit, it was Carlos Santana’s brother that said that?” But, no. Turns out it was George Santayana. But, well, close enough, I guess.
Besides, I’m still trying to get over the death of Gary Coleman. He was great in Office Space (and made a really good Mike Brady, too).
I’m off to see my nephew graduate from George School. Too bad it wasn’t that Ken Starr.
Well, I had one too many last night. Six sixteen ozers. too many. Sitting down to watch Toy Story 2 and finding out there’s a flaw in the brand new dvd and it won’t play kinda makes you want to throw a few back if you know what I mean. So then I started watching The Deadliest Catch, and I’m like man, that’s almost like the shit I’ll be doing in two weeks. Then I really started throwing ’em back.
Dennis Hopper dies at 74; actor directed counterculture classic ‘Easy Rider”
Hopper made his acting debut in ‘Rebel Without a Cause’ in 1955. He later descended into years of drug and alcohol abuse, but made a comeback in 1986 with his Oscar-nominated role in ‘Hoosiers.
:bong: :40: 🙁 :gate: :blues:
I should watch “Blue Velvet” tonight.
DON’T YOU FUCKING LOOK AT ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
:holla:
I think I may be doing something like that Monday, Kevin. Tonight some friends have Jorma Kaukonen playing in their backyard.
I posted a ‘Tube here once, I think, of a movie he was in called The American Friend. Highly recommended and a good pairing with Easy Rider.
Jorma? In their back yard? Damn. I need some friends like that.
Top Kill failed.
Now what?
🙁 :gate: Dennis Hopper.
I got to talk to him when “Blue Velvet” was shown at the Denver International Film Festival. He was just starting his comeback- maybe his second comeback afer “Easy Rider”. Don’t remember anything much except his intensity. It’s a real loss for people my age- the roles he played were a comfort for 50’s kids and 60’s teens who just didn’t fit into the considerable molding that society tried to pour you into.
I was angry then but couldn’t identify what- now with the BP clusterfuck I’m full of identifiable impotent useless rage.
