Odds are, you probably neither know nor care about the World Lacrosse Championships taking place in Manchester, England starting tomorrow (seems that lacrosse is huge in Manchester; who knew?). Thirty nations are participating. Well, make that 29, as the Iroquois National team is stranded in NYC.
Being citizens of a sovereign nation (which happens to be located in Upstate NY and Canada), team members carry Haudenosaunee passports. This has been good enough for the past 30+ years for traveling internationally, but now it seems that they low-tech passports don’t meet new high-tech standards, and, as the US government seems to be saying they won’t accept the passports for reentry, the British want a letter from the Department of State, stating that they’ll be allowed back into the US, or the team won’t be granted visas.
You’d think that would be simple enough (what with the Secretary of State being a former NY State Senator, the Vice President being an SU alum and lacrosse fan, and current NYS Senator Kirsten Gillibrand – among others – making personal pleas to the DOS to fix this stupidity), but unless somebody steps up by today, the Iroquois team (ranked #4 in the world, BTW), will be unable to attend.
The US has offered to supply temporary US passports, but, the team said thanks, but no thanks. The team has another flight booked for today. Hopefully they’ll make it.
Maybe they need to rape or murder someone, pj. I bet that could get them the right chip.
Good news.
There’s a really good story at Sports Illustrated about the Iroquois National lacrosse team, their sovereignty, and the importance it holds for the Haudenosaunee, for anybody who’s interested. And it’s not all “sportsy” or anything.
No word on if they were able to get their flight out today or not, but last I saw, it wasn’t looking good.Still stuck in NYC, waiting on Canada and visas from England. It would be really shitty if the Creator’s team wasn’t allowed to be represented.
I guess I have to listen to As It Happens today. They like doing stories about First Nations. I’m a little surprised that Canada ends up being less flexible than the USA. Guess it’s all the socialism.
btw, Happy Bastille Day! :gate:
The Brits, too, who are apparently saying the special “waiver” may not be sufficient.
The original change of flights has already cost $23,000. An anonymous donor has now purchased seats on an 11PM flight tonight, if the Canucks and the Limeys can get their shit together.
UK won’t let Iroquois lacrosse team go to tourney
In the now immortal words of Creighton Bernette, “FUCK YOU FUCKING FUCKS!

Rachel just did a report on Cheney’s heart condition. He has had a pumping device installed. As a result he has no pulse and needs to be plugged into an electrical supply at night. Forgive me, but I’m surprised he ever had a pulse. A battery operated Cheney seems right to me.
Gulf Seafood Isn’t Tested for Oil Dispersants
(Newser) – Seafood lovers may want to keep this mind: Anything coming from the Gulf of Mexico is being tested for contamination by oil, but not for contamination by chemical oil dispersants. BP has so far used 1.7 million gallons of one in particular, notes ProPublica. “There’s no need for hysteria,” writes Marian Wang, “but it’s good to be aware of unanswered questions and possible gaps in the current testing.”
A spokesman for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says a test for dispersants is in the works. Until then, officials are going by the “current science” that dispersants have low potential for harm. “There’s not a huge body of research that has been done,†says an FDA spokeswoman. “While we are finding that (dispersant) is harmful to the living fish itself, there’s a difference between what it does to a living fish and any harm that it might have for a human consuming a fish that was in or near water with dispersant in it.â€
Happy belated anniversary, pj and RG! That was a sweet tribute you wrote, pj.
Trav, feel better…
And don’t even complain about the heat you east coast whiners. You don’t know what real heat is. :billcat:
