I can’t think of many things worse than losing your home and everything in it. Certainly, the most important thing is to have your family and and all your critters make it out OK, ‘cuz stuff is just stuff, and most stuff can be replaced. A lot of stuff can’t, though, and even the stuff that can be replaced requires a lot of time, money, and hassle to get back again. So, to everybody in the Boulder who’ve lost their homes in the wildfire, our thoughts are with you. I’ve only been in the vicinity of Boulder/Denver once (well, twice I guess; once on the way out to Utah, and then on the way back), but it’s a beautiful area, and the loss of all that beautyl and wildlife is also a shame. I only hope the godless socialist government can provide at least some relief. Apparently the fire started as the result of a vehicle colliding with a propane tank, which is never a good idea.
Here, things remain the same. Yesterday was (predictably) one of the longest days I’ve had the misfortune of suffering through, and I was quite happy to get home and go to bed early last night. Unfortunately, a cold front came though in the middle of the night bringing thunderstorms and scaring the dogs. In other words, not much sleep for me. Oh well, at least it should be nice and cool today.
It was 44 years ago today – September 8, 1966 – that Star Trek premiered on NBC. Despite its premature assassination at the hands of witless network executives in 1969, the Star Trek universe has managed to live long and prosper, as several generations of characters have continued to explore strange new worlds, and to seek out new life and new civilizations.
Speaking of seeking things out, my search for a tractor continues, and I think it’s gonna involve a road trip to a used tractor place in Binghamton (which is about an hour south of here) on Saturday. None of the used tractor places around here seem to have what I’m looking for at my price range. I feel as if I’m hemorrhaging money at this point, and I haven’t even closed on the new house. It will, of course, only get worse.
Although a lot of kids actually went back yesterday (apparently they have this thing now where they bring the incoming freshmen in a day early to acclimate to high school; there was no such consideration back when I started 9th grade), today is what we always referred to as “Black Wednesday” – the first day of school. From what I understand, a lot of kids are excited to start school again after the summer. I never was. Oh, it was OK to see friends you didn’t see over the break, but, for the most part, I was always quite content to be on vacation, and I would be quite happy to win the lottery and retire right now.
That doesn’t seem likely, though, so I guess I’ll just have to slog through another day, and boldly go where I have mind-numbingly gone so many times before. To work.
It is supposed to rain today. I hear almost continuous but distant thunder. Fortunately, Lola is not afraid of thunder. She isn’t a brave dog. She is afraid to go out alone in the dark. But thunder doesn’t bother her. Neither do fireworks. Very mysterious.
Art’s friends, who lost their house, took time to save the neighbor’s dog before they fled. I’m sure that act of kindness has given their neighbor something to smile about in all this awfulness.
I know we should make a plan so that in such an emergency we know what to do and what to take. But, what if you’re not home? Having a neighbor like Art’s friend is a wonderful thing.
The “teenager” said it’s pretty darn smokey where he is. So glad he is safe. Those poor folks.
pj, was happy to see you want a front loader. I insisted on it when we got our tractor and we used it all the time, as did my neighbors. It’s like an extra pair of arms. We ended up using the bushhog more than the finishing mower. Get as wide a one as you can! I would get air conditioning next time. But I live where it gets super hot. I’m partial to Massey’s, but we had a John Deere.
:cake: Happy Birthday, Seanie Sean!! :cake:
Well, if I get a cab, it’ll be to keep from freezing to death while using the bucket to plow the driveway, which is really my most immediate need at this point (otherwise I won’t be making it to work much next winter). I’ve mostly been looking at Kubotas.
And Happy Birthday, Sean.
Happy birthday Sean.
:cake:
:cake: Sean! Be Safe
Why is NBC giving so much air time to this assclown in Florida who wants to burn the Koran? Could a responsible media do anything more to enflame things even more and divide us even more? :fustrate:
I wasn’t including Fux news which has been trying to enflame and divide us over everything for the last ten years.
I do however admire the hell out of Mayor Bloomberg from out here. He supports the building of the Mosque and the right of Preacher Muttonchops to burn the Koran.
Mayor Bloomberg was a life long liberal Dem before he decided to run for mayor on the Republican Line because he had too much competition on the Dem line. Then he spent his own millions to get elected.
As a mayor he’s done some reasonable things and some bullheaded stuff, like turning the schools into a bunch of test-prep sites. (The teacher’s call it content free education.) But, he was a welcome relief from Rudy who was hated.
He also praised term limits until he decided only he could guide the City during the recession and got the council to overturn them for themselves and him.
So, he never got my vote and often pissed me off.
Yet, I am really grateful for and thrilled by his obviously principled and heartfelt defense of the Islamic Center near ground zero.
I agree, sp
my girlfriend had a Kubota with a cab, aircon + cd player + etc. But she had more acreage. They had quite a few problems with it, but all while under warranty. She bush hogged my pastures for me a few times and whipped right through it. I had tractor envy. Of course, they’re blue and tractors really should be red.
We got soome sweet sweet rain showers right over the fire today. It cleansed the air of the smoke and lifted everyone’s spirit’s.
Thank you Great Cloud Being
Her’s hoping the Great Cloud Being smiled on OKat in a different way.
Kubotas are orange.
