Yesterday, it rained. And rained. Then it rained some more. In fact, it’s still raining right now, though it’s supposed to stop this morning. I was hoping to hear about a closing date yesterday (on Thursday, they told me everything was in, and they were looking at Monday or Tuesday). But I didn’t hear anything yesterday at all, so I’m guessing Monday is out of the question. It would have been nice to at least hear something, but, well, I guess I’m not important enough for a courtesy call. Maybe if I was borrowing a few million dollars or something. Oh well.
Last night, a whole bunch of former SU basketball stars were on hand to see Jim Boeheim awarded the 2010 Sporting News coach of the year award at halftime of an NBA exhibition game between the Minnesota Timberwolves (who have three former SU players on their roster – at least until Jason Hart gets cut) and the Detroit Pistons. Former Piston (and current Detroit mayor) Dave Bing (Jim Boeheim’s college room and back court mate) tossed the ceremonial opening tip, and, hell, even Floyd Little was on hand. For those keeping score, the T-Wolves won 99-88.
Now, our thoughts turn to football, and there’s a big game here today (for we, the SU faithful – certainly not for anybody else), as the Pitt Panthers come to town. Pitt was picked by the coaches to win the Big East this year, but have had a bit of a shaky start, while we’ve actually had our best start since 1999 (albeit against less than stellar opposition).
So – on Homecoming Day no less – we have an opportunity to win two Big East games in a row (we haven’t won two Big East games period – let alone two in a row – since 2004; it pains me to think of how pitiful we’ve become, though it gives me a little bit of pleasure to see how crappy Michigan’s defense is these days with our former coach as DC). Of course, we also have an opportunity to play like shit and get killed. Personally, I don’t have good vibes about this game, but that could be just because I’ve become accustomed to great disappointment (in both life, and SU sports). But, we’ll see.
I thought Rabbi What’shisface was just kidding when he said Carl Paladino had turned gay, but I’ll be damned – it’s true!
Just days after Republican gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino attacked his Democratic opponent Andrew Cuomo for attending a gay pride parade, his campaign sent out a campaign e-mail that that calls into question Cuomo’s own support for gay rights.
That’s right: Andy isn’t gay enough for Carl. I can’t wait to see Carl in his Speedos and pasties, marching down 5th Avenue next year (actually, that’s a sight I hope never to see).
Oh well, time to go and not get any work done at my new house because they don’t want me to close until there’s six feet of snow on the ground.
No rain in Brooklyn, but lots and lots of wind. Today I’m babysitting for Nina who is no longer a baby, she’s 8 and in third grade. Since this morning this babysitting has cost me $70. Kids are not cheap especially to their grandmothers.
Gail Collins:
How far back in a candidate’s history do we want to travel?
It’s pretty clear that kindergarten behavior is off-limits, although there are several people running for important offices this year who remind me of a preschooler I once knew who hated sharing so much that whenever other children came to play he’d pile everything he could get his hands on, down to large pieces of lint, in one huge mound and sit on it all afternoon.
College years are more problematic. In Delaware, Chris Coons, the Democratic candidate for Senate, has been haunted by an essay he wrote for the Amherst College student newspaper, in which he light-heartedly referred to himself as a “bearded Marxist.†During a debate this week, Coons and his opponent, Christine O’Donnell, tangled over whether the line, which he wrote in 1985, was more damning than the multitude of strange things O’Donnell “said on a comedy show 10 years ago.â€

The governor’s decision to kill the Hudson River tunnel project will go down as a blunder of historic proportions. It will stunt the state’s job market, depress home values, and leave us with nightmarish traffic jams and dirtier air.
He is leaving $3 billion in federal money on the table. And he’s putting at risk another $3 billion in Port Authority money that had been set aside for this project. Those are collosal sums.
So why did he do it? Why would he kill a project that even he concedes is critical to the state’s future?
He wants you to believe he had little choice because the costs were skyrocketing.
Don’t buy it. The evidence makes it clear that he wanted to kill this tunnel project so he could grab the money New Jersey had set aside for it. That is the only way he can avoid raising the gas tax to finance transit projects within the state’s borders

pj, you still get Maher? Your boy Kreepy Kos was on last night’s panel. And a great O’Donnell montage.
I know a lot of people have a grudge against molitus but I thought he was pretty spot on last night. What I could hardly stand was the Palin-of-the-month pretender sitting to Bill’s right. I finally had to just fast forward when ever she opened her yap. Do they go to a teabagger voice school to make my brain imagine I’m feeding myself into a woodchipper? :barf: 👿
I kind of like the guy but I love it when pj calls him creepy. I went to a FUBAR reading here that Markos attending with his little child and it was very cure watching him standing off to the side with a baby in his arms. That woman was annoying but she did say fuck, maybe in overtime.
Someone I think on MSNBC in the last few days made someone listen to Sarah speaking and asking if he could really stand listening to that for 4 years.
I like Dailykos but Markos, in person, says the right thing but is
unconvincing. He does better in writing.
As for Maher and the Palin-pretender, whenever she spoke she quoted absolutely false statistics. When she was finally set straight she said that there were people who would disagree. I found it astounding that she based her opinion on facts that she and her ilk make up and spread.
Why am I still astounded? I must be really be really dopey.
Another piece of my childhood gone… The mother of pearls
🙁 :gate:
” Ward, I’m very worried about the Beaver. ”
June Cleaver: was everyones Mom in the 60’s.
she’d make my mom laugh so hard she’d … umm, cry!
June Cleaver? Oh, that’s too bad.
I call Kos creepy for one reason – he looks like a very creepy character from the X-Files. Also, he does kind of give me the creeps.
Much as I admire what he’s done with DK, I get the sense that he has a very inflated sense of self. Perhaps I’m unfairly projecting that onto him, though.
One thing that did irk me quite a bit was when he said he thought military service should be a requirement to be President (have to take my word for that right now, as I don’t feel like looking for a link to it), which I strongly disagree with.
The teabagger chick from last night was a twit, but I’ve seen worse on that show. I was somewhat irked by Maher’s dismissal of the ‘American Taliban’ idea. No, they haven’t started executing people for being gay or not believing in Jebus yet – but I have no doubt they’d love to if they got the chance.
I don’t know if he ever actually said it or not, but the quote was always Eddie Haskell coming over to the Cleaver’s house and saying, “Hi Mrs. Cleaver, how’s the Beaver?”
Sue, her comeback was always something like ‘disputed’ and nothing else. These people have to be stopped in the headlights on shows like this and called out and challenged. All of their dismissive laughter and toss-offs flatulent quips/luntz-bites and false equivalencies. It has to be done. Of course, they will all just retreat into their well-financed echo chambers but their verbal diarrhea needs to be contained.
It still amazes me that they have their own unique facts for which they have no source other than “some people say ” or ” there are others who dispute…”
They really do make up their own reality. I can’t wait to have them back in charge of the House.
a gilbert and sullivan take on the prez.
he should run it as prime time PR.
