Another early day for me, as I have to go do some shopping, and then be around for a topsoil delivery ($100 for 4 yards delivered; a pretty good deal, I thought. One might even say ‘dirt cheap’). After finally getting some info on where shit (so to speak) is in my septic system, I was able to uncover what once was apparently the distribution box (it looks like there was a box sorta thing, over which they’d placed a very light concrete cover). The cover is all but disintegrated, and the ends of the lines had pretty much filled with clay over the year. More urgently, the outflow pipe from the tank to the DB was crushed (under a rather large – and quite heavy) rock.
So, today will be filled with more tractor work and digging (and the faint, sweet aroma of urine, fecal matter, and ancient, rotting hair & soap all mixed together). Mmmm. I’d have to say that – if we can get this repaired – the tractor will have come close to paying for itself in this one project alone (I don’t know what somebody would have charged for all this, but people who work with shit son’t come ‘dirt cheap’ – and rightfully so, IMHO). Assuming you count all the free labor my friend John is providing me. He and my sister have been invaluable (and by that, I of course mean I haven’t paid them anything).
In other news of interest only to me and other Orange fans, the SU football team plays its final Big East game tonight (though the season finale is next week against former Big East and one-time annual opponent Boston College) against UConn. A win secures a second place finish (while still having the potential for a shared or even outright league championship), no worse than an 8-4 regular season finish, and the chance for revenge against the Connecticut coach – Randy Edsall, a former SU player himself – who last year (with an 11-point lead, 55 seconds on the clock, and SU having no timeouts left inside the Syracuse 30) called a pass on 4th down that went for a TD. Now, clearly, it’s up to the defense to stop that, but unless one is a huge asshole, one does not run up the score that way – especially against one’s alma mater. But Randy is one (an asshole, that is), so it would be nice if SU could win.
Fortunately, the game isn’t until 7:00, when it’ll be too dark to be doing anything outside, so I’ll be able to watch (yes, I should be going to the game in person like a good little fan, but I just don’t have the time or money these days – but, well, it’s on teevee in HD, and the seats in my living room are much more comfortable). Whether I’ll want to watch the whole game is another question. We shall see.
Sadly, Syracuse’s offense isn’t what you would call ‘good,’ so every game is a challenge (especially this late in the season, where an already light roster has been further decimated by injuries). Still, one can hope. And, really, win or lose, we’re way ahead of schedule on the whole rebuilding thing. I believe our coach will soon be elected King of Syracuse – but if you’d like to see him named Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year, please feel free to go and vote for him here. That’s Doug Marrone – Syracuse. He needs to finish in the top 15 to make it to the next round, and not only will you be doing me a favor and making me happy if he gets your vote, but, given the sorry state of SU football affairs I’ve been forced to chronicle over the past five years or so, he actually deserves it.
But, anyhow, time for coffee and to get ready to hit Home Depot by 6:00.
Light cement cover of a well? It crumbled? Was Haliburton Involved?
Not a well. A distribution box. Goes like this (and this is new to me, pretty much, as septic systems had never been something I’d had to deal with before):
House has drains and soil pipes. They all feed into one pipe that goes out into the septic tank. Tank has two compartments, separated by a baffle. Shit drops to the bottom of compartment one, baffle hopefully keeps it mostly over on its own side, water makes its way over to compartment two and, finally out the outflow pipe of the tank. The outflow pipe goes over to a box (one pipe in, and in this case five pipes out), distributing the “effluent” to the different sections of the leech field.
The main problem with my system was that the outflow pipe from the tank to the distribution box was collapsed. There was no stone around it whatsoever, so the water had no place to go. Eventually, the tank got full – above the point where the pipe from the house goes into the the tank. The, um “stuff” from the drains, then, had no place to go – eventually filling all the drains, and, well, backing up into the house.
This, by the way, is not a good thing.
The second problem (which I don’t think was as much of a problem at this point, but would no doubt become one in the future) was the distribution box. Or lack thereof. There is something in the bottom (not sure what material it is – pretty hard stuff), and six pipes sitting on top of it (one in, five out). Presumably, it was covered with some sort of a lid at some point, sealing the ends of the pipes in, and the gravel and dirt it was buried in, out.
Now, though, there was no longer a lid. Gravel and dirt (in this case, pretty thick clay) settled in, and the ends of most of the pipes were pretty much plugged up. This had gravel around it, so it drained at least to some extent (and what with the outflow pipe crushed, it really didn’t matter).
So, I have to replace the crushed pipe, and try and finagle some sort of box cover. Then I can crap and do laundry without worry.
I hope.
Good luck with the :crap: pj.

Gail Collins writes about zombies, politics and Bob Ney (the guy who went to prison for his shenanigans with Abramoff) who is now happy in India studying meditation. Perhaps he may need money in which case he is in the right place to answer your call when you ask why there is a mysterious charge on your credit card.

A group of Louisiana citizens, believed to be backed by the conservative Christian Louisiana Family Forum, are attacking the state’s proposed biology textbooks because, well, they teach too much evolution.
The Baton Rouge Advocate reported this week that a state panel is scheduled to review the issue Friday after the state’s school board held off adopting the biology I and biology II textbooks due to the complaints.

Of course the reason American students are not knocking ’em dead with their science acumen is their teacher’s fault.
pj, for your non-bobblehead news boycott bobblehead Sunday, Mr. FK has a story running on This Weak with Christy.
OKat, how is the new house?
The poll found that 62 percent of whites who identified as Tea Party members, 56 percent of white Republicans, and even 53 percent of white independents said that today discrimination against whites has become as big a problem as discrimination against blacks and other minorities. Only 30 percent of white Democrats agreed with that statement.

SP, having some work done so haven’t moved in yet. It’s rather hard to work mega-hours and coordinate this stuff solo. I’m living and working about 1 1/2 hrs away from it so it’s slowly coming along. Had some structural work done and am currently having a bathroom redone. Then will have interior paint and the stairs finished. Oh and a new OS Smith water heater (Ed Begley approved) and some galvanized plumbing ripped out and a fence for the dorks AND then move in……
but have to keep working to afford it! :billcat:
Wish this ole body would let me do some of the work, but it just ain’t in the cards.
PS Living with three large dogs in an apartment up 25 steep stairs that was an old whore house in a small Okie town is rather interesting…
