I was driving around yesterday and something popped into my head that I wanted to write about. Something very interesting that would be a lot better than, “gee, it’s supposed to be hot today.” Unfortunately I can’t remember what the f*ck it was. Sorry. It was gonna be good, too. This getting old shit sucks. But I can only think of one way to stop getting old, and that’s not particularly desirable either.
I did, however, hear the “week in sports” segment on Weekend Edition (I think that’s it – the one with Scott Simon and what really is beginning to sound to me like his fake and overly-exuberant laugh) and some guy who wasn’t Stefan Fatsis. They did stories on the upcoming World Cup Football (I’m feeling European this morning) match between the US of A and Brazil and, um, some other apparently less-than-memorable (see above) shit. What they didn’t think was worth mentioning was that John Mackey passed away this week.
OK, so maybe I only care because he went to SU, but it still seems like his death was at least worth a passing mention.
Never mind that John Mackey redefined the position he played. He took a lot of shit when, as head of the NFL Player’s Association, he did something nobody had ever done before – he stood up to the slave NFL owners, orchestrated a player’s strike in 1970, and led a successful antitrust challenge to “The Rozelle Rule” – ushering in the modern era of free agency (which I suppose you can like or dislike – I’d be willing to admit that, from a personal, selfish standpoint, I think sports were a lot better when teams more or or less stayed together and players didn’t move around like mercenaries playing for the highest bidder, though I can’t imagine I’d find it acceptable if I couldn’t go and work for whatever employer I thought offered the best deal for me and my family – but at the very least, it seems like a significant development).
Mackey also fought for the “old-timers,” and it would seem both newsworthy and sadly ironic that, at a time when brain injuries in football are making the news, he suffered from frontotemporal dementia – which almost certainly resulted from his years of playing. And it would also seem rather shameful that an NFL Hall-of-Famer (whose induction was delayed until 1992, most likely due to the feathers he ruffled by his union activism) couldn’t pay his medical bills, forcing his wife of 47 years, Sylvia (Mackey’s college roommate – a guy by the name of Ernie Davis – leant him $5 and the keys to his car so John could take Sylvia on their first date), to go back to work at the age of 56 as a flight attendant.
But I guess John Mackey’s story wasn’t compelling enough to warrant a mention on NPR. Maybe Scott Simon couldn’t fake a laugh over it.
Oh, and gee, it’s supposed to be hot today.
NYC has the formula to create failing schools by stacking the deck and denying resources:
According to an analysis by the city’s Independent Budget Office, [the 15 “worst” high schools] have more poor children (63 percent versus 52 percent citywide), more homeless students (6 percent versus 4 percent), more special-education students (18 versus 12). For 24 percent of Jamaica High students, English is a foreign language, compared with 11 percent citywide.
The “worst†high schools are sent the eighth graders who are the furthest behind: their average proficiency score on state tests is 2.6 out of 4, compared with 2.9 citywide, and more of these students (9 percent versus 4 percent) are over age, suggesting they have had to repeat grades.

C’mon, pj. As best I can tell, Mackey never had a connection to a Chicago sports franchise which is the qualifier for notice on the Simon show. Otherwise, this is what you get. Football Hall Of Famer John Mackey Has Died At least Frank Deford noted him in 2008.
If anybody would like a Google+ invitation, let me know.
invitation to ………, ❓
Google+
I don’t think I’m in their demographic. We’re seeking to be less connected on the truck-full of tubes
I refuse to upgrade to Google Chrome- just ’cause I’m old and don’t like change 🙄
Oh, well, it seems less invasive and more limited than, say, Facebook. Plus it’s got free 5-way video chat. Not that I know four other people. Mostly, I just wanted to check it out, and now that I wrangled an invite, I thought I’d offer it up, just in case (kinda hard to check out social media when you’re basically anti-social).
Chrome is my browser of choice these days. Though Firefox is still right up there, and so is Opera (Opera Mini is my #1 for the BlackBerry though).
I’d love to get an Android tablet. But, alas, I’m financially constrained.
Oh, BTW, that picture of John Mackey…. He used to wear his Super Bowl ring on one hand, and his Hall of Fame ring on the other. He also refused to accept his HOF ring in Indianapolis. It was presented to him in Baltimore, instead.
Interesting ‘This American Life’ this week – all about hydrofracking the Marcellus Shale in PA. Podcast available at 7:00 tonight.
Also a very interesting ‘State of the Re:Union’ this week. Well, to me, anyway. It was about Utica, NY, and how it has opened its arms to immigrants from around the world.
Just scoping the page I thought it looked like something that a college student would be interested in- but out of respect for the alumni of Mrs Arts’ alma mater, I’ll check it out.
Heh, well, not sure if being a drop-out qualifies one for alumni status (I think I took the whole “tune-in, turn-on and drop out” thing pretty literally).
If so, I’m an alum of several fine institutions of higher learning. :nixon:
Despite being a multiple drop-out, according to 60 minutes you could become a “shaleionnaire” if they found natural gas under the Sauter estates and buy a shiny new Escalade. :dancers:
👿
I downloaded Chrome. When I open it I don’t have any toolbar.
I’ve got the short cut on my desktop but if I go to Google from ‘favorites’, I’m still getting the old version and it’s asking me to download Chrome.
This is why I don’t like change. :tinfoil:
Fine interview with Maron. He kind of reminds me of Zappa except for the insecurity.

Google+ has exceeded their expectations.
Now I’ll never know
Google chrome was buggy for me. I got frustrated and went back to firefox.
pj, the local fish wrap has a column today by Gwen Knapp about Mackey. Apparently the greedy bastards are moving to a monetizing model so it is apparently will not be available for 48 hours on line. I wanted to let you know just in case I forget about it.
I’ll take an invite to Google +. I was having some Chrome issues but I updated. They do not necessarily tell you that you might have an old version but a Word Press blog let me know. It seems better but I have to clear the cache every couple of day.
Speaking of bird cage liners…
Interesting. I don’t have any problems with Chrome. Maybe way back when, but it’s up to version 12 now, and has been quite stable for a long time. For me, anyhow. In fact, it’s way faster than FF.
The only slight issue I have with it comes, predictably, on the Mac. For some reason, it rejects the SSL cert for my company’s webmail, and won’t allow me to move past it. Doesn’t happen on any of my Windows boxes.
