The roads were pretty empty this morning, so I guess that means a lot of people took the day off to celebrate the execution of some poor guy a couple thousand years ago. Not sure what’s “good” about that, but I guess you have to base your religion around something, and what’s better than torture and death? I never really got the whole “Jesus had to die to atone for our sins” thing. I mean, what good did that possibly do? Did all the sinners get a “get out of hell free” card or something? I guess I should have asked back when I was going to Religious Ed., but I don’t really remember questions being encouraged.
They sure do know how to celebrate Good Friday in the Philippines.
Thousands of people gathered in Philippine villages to watch devotees being nailed to crosses as they marked Good Friday by re-enacting Jesus Christ’s suffering….
Nine men wearing crowns of twigs on their heads were crucified for a few minutes by villagers dressed as Roman centurions in northern Pampanga province’s San Pedro Cutud village. At least eight other people were nailed to crosses in neighboring villages.
Jesus, that smarts.
Oh well, whatever cross is yours to bare, I hope you have a good Friday.

Neil Cavuto and whoever it is that reports on the stock market were just beside themselves with glee that the stock market went down this week. Rooting for failure is the definition of Fox Noise patriotism. Good grief.
And speaking of good, this is Good Friday, as PJ noted, though I have no idea what is good about it and it’s also Passover which, I believe, is what Jesus and his friends were celebrating at the last supper. Of course, because of the absolute logic which governs the observance of religious holidays by different calendars, these 2 holidays are not often together.
Actually they are almost always together since Passover is almost always the first full moon after the Vernal equinox and Easter is always the first Sunday after that full moon. There is an adjustment every so often to re-synch the calendars used for Passover as in 2009 when Passover was a month later than Easter but although I don’t know how often that happens. My Jewish scholars are busy tonight with Pesach and Shabbat.

So this week I had to go to the land of the prison rodeo. What? you ask. Well, for 69 years the good folks in McAlester, OK have held a rough and tough rodeo inside the walls of a maximum security prison. Not that any of the prisoners from around the state that came to compete were experienced. Well, maybe blood thirsty was sufficient experience. Animals were evidently killed not that infrequently. There are some graphic videos out there that I will not post on this fine site nor will I watch.
Thankfully, they have stopped this barbarically Romanesque event. My dad told me that he used to take our family to this rodeo every year when I was a child. I, thankfully, have no recollection of this “family outing.” I asked him, “What the hell were you thinking taking small children inside a maximum security prison?” “I was always looking for entertainment for you kids.”
Maybe this helps explain why I’m a flaming vegetarian librul.
