Although I hadn’t intended to, I actually stayed up and watched last night’s dog and pony show. Well, some of it. I must’ve passed out and went to bed (yeah, in that order) at some point. Anyhow, what I did see pretty much sucked. This morning’s conventional wisdom says that Romney won, Obama sucked, and Jim Lehrer was the worst debate moderator in the history of presidential debates. Up next, “the bounce.” And then the horse race will be on. Rather depressing, if you ask me.
On the bright side, I watched “Heist: Who Stole The American Dream?” on SnagFilms (via the Roku, though you can watch it online, too – free for a week or something), and it was pretty good. Also depressing, of course. Narrated by our old friend Thom Hartmann. The short summary is that we’ve all been screwed (but then you probably knew that already.
Of course, if you think we’re screwed now, wait until President Romney and his gang get control. I think my retirement plans are pretty much shot to hell.
I really was pretty scared after it was over that
Thurston P. Howell might be elected :tinfoil:
I was shocked when Romney said he wasn’t lowering taxes. Isn’t that what he’s been campaigning on? What’s the point of lowering rates if in the end there will be no difference? Don’t we us deductions to promote activities we want?
Eliminating Obamacare and cutting big bird won’t help. Obamacare should help the deficit and eliminating Big Bird won’t do very much. Everything he likes about Obamacare he’ll keep but he won’t insure the uninsured and he won’t pay for anything. He also said he doesn’t need to tell the insurance companies what they can do because they already insure kids ’til they’re 26. Isn’t that because they were mandated to do that?
Apparently Romney won on style and as usual I didn’t get it because I don’t like his policies or his style. As usual I’m a dope.
He also lied, was disingenuous and marked his territory
like the alpha CEO that he is.
I’d prefer an angry black man calling him out on his
bullshit but that guy wasn’t there.
It’s so clear that this douche will say anything
to be elected.
If there is a Rmoney bounce, his side will not be able to crow about it now they have invested so much time and hot air debunking the polls as useless, inaccurate and meaningless.
I did not watch it because I was taken to the Mountain Winery to see Robert Earl Keen and EmmyLou Harris. I listened to some on the radio on the way and have been seeing some of the post mortem since. The are playing up the Rmoney running over Jim Lehrer. I wonder how effective it is to beat up on an admired albeit feckless veteran like that. I thought it was a little ugly and revelatory. I just wish/hope that they truth check the shit out of last night and fertilize the media liberally.
I guess it’s repug debate boilerplate to put the evil media moderator place. As with a lot of thinks, Romney didn’t get it. He was not in a stacked auditorium of rabid right wingers.
I didn’t hear about it beforehand, but they had a benefit concert for Levon Helm the other day. To save the barn or something. I miss Levon. And Rick. And Richard.
Robbie, not so much. But then, he aint dead yet.
😥 Everybody’s dying on me.
Garth Hudson was the musical mastermind behind The Band and he’s still with us. I met him at one of those Spinal Tap-like gigs where he played in a band called Burrito Deluxe with Sneaky Pete Kleinow. He was standing unbothered so I went over to tell him how much his music had meant to me and take a quick exit to leave him alone and he was genuinely friendly and seemed to want to talk. Damn Canadians.
In fact, The Band is probably my favorite American band. Robbie was their weakest link.
Please don’t take that in any way to diminish the greatness of Levon and Danko and Manuel. They were those voices that were so pure and evocative and real.
A good tweet from The Onion:

Well, THAT was depressing to watch. I was yelling at Obama. He had so many opportunities to filet Thurston Howell (I rather like that) and he just sat like a lump on a log. OF COURSE we need federal legislation on healthcare. It’s good enough for the insurance companies- they’re federally exempt from anti-trust laws. Look at how the states are implementing healthcare now?? What about civil rights? Had to be done federally. And Obama DID give some states leeway for welfare and the rethugs had a hay day with that one.
Jim Lehrer should retire and have his funding cut. Geezus. How impotent was that performance? And I mean Jim and Barack.
Doubtless I’ve posted this here before. I always love when autumn comes around so I can revisit it.
