Well, I survived yet another Annual Health Assessment (my BP was high – what a shocker). Luckily, I got the nice nurse (and not the rather amazonian looking one who likes to pump the sphygmomanometer up to about 5,000 pounds per square inch), and she didn’t feel a need to bully me into discussing the details of my last colonoscopy or prostate exam (or even nag me about declining to get a flu shot). Outside in line, they had a big sign hawking their “Thimerosal Free Flu Shots,” and the woman in line in front of me said, “oh, I wonder what that is?” so I told her it was a mercury-containing organic compound used as a preservative in many drugs (and, especially, in multi-dose vaccines). She was quite impressed, and said that I must “really read up” on this stuff. Yep, that’s right. I’m IT, ma’am. We know pretty much everything (which is a big reason why I decline to get the shot).
So I see that Mayor Bloomers is endorsing Obama, primarily because he thinks Obama is the better candidate to deal with climate change. Well, OK. I guess given a choice between the two on that issue, Obama is better choice, though I can’t really say I think of him as a leader on the issue (he has done a few good things). I don’t know that Bloomie’s endorsement will sway anybody (certainly not lovers of super-size sodas), but, what the hell. One rich bastard turning on another rich bastard is always good to see (though with Bloomberg’s $25 billion net worth, he probably thinks of Romney as one of the 47% of the losers out there who ought to go out and take a little responsibility for their lives).

Red Hook Houses Without Water: Bring Donations to PS 32
November 1, 2012The Red Hook Houses are without power and running water. Donations are being accepted at PS 32, on Hoyt Street between Union and President.
Donations of bottled water, paper towels, and toilet paper are needed.
So, if you’re in the area, please donate a little TP and water for the folks in Red Hook. And paper towels, too, though if you can only give one or the other, go with the TP, ‘cuz while, in a pinch, you can substitute one for the other, I think I’d prefer to use TP to wipe up a spill rather than use paper towels to wipe, well, you know.
You may have heard that the CIA released a timeline of the events in Benghazi, Libya, that (surprise!) debunks Fux News and Republican conspiracy theorists claims about the attacks that killed four people.
…senior intelligence officials told reporters Thursday the CIA deployed a rescue mission from a nearby base within 25 minutes of being alerted to the attack, which killed the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans.
But they say the six-member team did not arrive until 25 minutes after that, in part because of a failed attempt to acquire the assistance of Libyan militias with heavy weapons, and because they came under fire as they approached the consulate.
The CIA team reportedly remained at the consulate for an hour before leaving with all the Americans, except for the slain ambassador, who had been taken to a nearby hospital.
[…]
Intelligence officials say the rescue effort also involved deploying an unarmed U.S. military drone to the scene, sending emergency reinforcements from the Libyan capital, Tripoli, and chartering an airplane that eventually brought most of the Americans to safety.Officials again adamantly denied that CIA officers were told to “stand down,†saying they responded to the attack “as quickly and effectively as possible.â€
SU basketball season started up last night with an exhibition game against Pace University (who were probably happy to come up here to get out of Manhattan and score some Central New York bottled water and toilet paper). I mention this only because it seems that the team’s nickname is the “setters.” Yes, the Pace Setters. That’s pretty lame, but, on the bright side, their mascot is “Tbone,” a rather cute (and non-threatening) dog (which beats a big orange plushie any day).
Alright, enough of this falderal, time to get this week over already.
The Red Hook houses that are out of water are the public housing high rises. They need pumps to get the water to the apartment and no pumps means no water. The rest of RH housing is low rise and have water which, according to Bloomie, is safe to drink because they added extra chlorine.
The big problem is gas. Some gas stations have it but can’t pump it because they lack electricity and some can pump it but have no gas.
Republican stronghold, Staten Island, was hit very hard and they are yelling that they have not gotten enough help. The borough president announced that people should not give money to the Red Cross because the Red Cross has not arrived yet.
Red Hook has not received any help either but there is a lot of neighborhood organizing. People with power are sharing it with neighbors who need to charge phones etc. Volunteers are organized to help with clean up. Lawyers are coming tomorrow to help with FEMA applications. There is still much misery. Just imagine not taking a shower for 6 days.
It’s getting colder and folks have no heat and I heard there is another storm coming. That can’t be helpful.
Not that any self-reliant repugs would ever begin to blame someone else for not coming to take care of them like O’Bama and the 47% victim class would. Maybe they are right but there is a vast impacted area and I am sure emergency efforts are spread incredibly thin and the issues are many and being prioritized. I’ve been through a pretty big disaster here and know what it can be like. I do feel sorry for them and everyone else suffering from this tragedy of unprecedented proportion. 🙁
Speaking of repugs taking responsibility for their shortfalls, here’s a touching story about an ‘institution’ in my old hometown of Richmond.
Bill’s Barbecue Featured In Romney Campaign Ad
Fact is Bill’s Barbecue just sucked. I think it was OK when I was a kid but maybe I just didn’t know any better and it was a hangout. I remember going back there some time back and it was horrible. Flavorless unsmoked dry grey meat mush (and not very much) on a soggy bun with bad slaw and some poor industrial barbecue sauce. It bordered on inedible. They hadn’t made an improvement in decades. Their restaurants were dingy and dirty and they ran afoul of those pesky gubment health inspectors numerous times. Not to mention in time new and better barbecue came to town and they couldn’t compete. They should have been blaming Rmoney for not bailing them out with the Bain effect.
But really, a marathon?
Well, not for now.
Yeah, I saw the Bills’ BBQ thing. Apparently, they had some issues with health inspectors.
This is a picture from my 1970 high school yearbook ad pages. I think that is my editorial staff. It looks like I was already suspicious of Bill’s even then.
Where is that Repthuglican mantra, gotta take personal responsibility for your failures and your future? Thought Bill wasn’t supposed to rely on Obama and all….
Can’t imagine the pollution you’re enduring, sp. there is a fundraiser on teevee but the only option is the Red Cross and they’ve had a few problems. Why did they get the lock on it?
I have to think they have been cleaning up their act although I would guess they still have an overpaid head. I’ll bet there is a good mormon or catholic charity you can contribute to if you are really concerned.
😉 :priest: :pope:
Hopefully we won’t need a magic underwear emoticon next week.

Why is the federal government cleaning up a private company’s mess??? What happened to free market? If the company can’t handle it without a government bailout, shouldn’t they close up shop, Mr R’money?

On behalf of Charles Bronson, Rosanne Barr, Phil Simms, Adam Ant, Larry Holmes, Michael Dukakis, and Bob Feller, I thank you.
I guess I missed this one when my old man passed.
Today’s adventure was a trip to Brooklyn. First up was voting. NYS has early voting; they just never mention it. But NYers can vote beginning 30 days from an election. The Bd of Elections is open on the weekend before an election from 9am to 9pm. This time I had no trouble. I filled out an application and was told to wait with about 13 others with the same idea. All told it took about 40 minutes. I had been asked to find out what the voting plans for Red Hook are and was told no one knows. So, we shall see what they come up with and be as surprised as everyone else.
Then we went home. Most of the water had drained itself save about 2″ that couldn’t get over the door sill. So, we spent the day throwing out debris and pumping water out. We got a lot of it but not all of it. There is black gunk everywhere. The water line was 6 inches from the ceiling so we actually had 7 1/2′ of flood. Stinky water is everywhere: in the fridge, in the drawers in cups in cabinets. Truly everything was destroyed. A group of Red Hook folks organized a clean up and there were people everywhere offering help. There were lawyers helping folks fill out FEMA applications. I couldn’t get to talk to one because I needed to work with Mike. But, I’ll go on line tomorrow and fill it out.
And, some drama from Lola who cut the pad on her hind paw and got diarrhea and an upset stomach. She seems to feel better and the bandaged paw makes everyone pay special attention to her (even people passing on the street) so she is happy.
Dayum, Sue. I am so sorry. Thanks for getting in your vote.
Last year one of my best of friends who lives in Stumpy Point, NC got nailed by Hurricane Irene. They took on 18″ of water in their house above the ground floor with no basement. Of course, when the water rises above the floor, you are in deep. That your water went so high and I am guessing was not of the same quality as what was pumping in on the Outer Banks of NC, I am just stunned. I was down at his place a few weeks after the storm and I was amazed at how they had progressed but in the end they had to prop up their house many feet which they had already be planning. They lost just about all of their appliances and electrical in the deal. They are just getting back in now to the elevated house but had to ride out the early edge of Sandy last week.
I guess what I am saying is it sounds like you are going through a similar situation (on steroids). My friend has jumped through a lot of the hoops you may be facing for over a year. He might have some FEMA and other advice about what you will be going through. Let me know if I can help you at any time.
Wishing you guys the best and thinking of you.
🙁
Thank you Vern. I have no idea what FEMA does beyond providing toxic trailers to NO. My neighbors don,t know either. I wish FEMA would pass out a flyer that says “This is what we do.” Fortunately the community is doing a good job of organizing itself but that can only go so far.
It was a sad sight in Red Hook today. The Fairway supermarket filled it’s parking lot with freezers and display cases. There were chairs and dressers and odd collections of things. One person threw out 50+ shoe box sized metal boxes. Heavy black garbage bags are everywhere. The amazing news is the garbage is being picked up quickly. Long gas lines have made an appearance to give those young uns a taste of the 70s .
Just zap me an email at vmcnemar at gmail dot com if I can do something. John has been through the FEMA drills and is a veteran now of second floor and off site living. Thankfully, I think they are approaching the end of this travail 8 feet above the ground and loving how the World Series turned out.
Thinking of you guys, sp. Just can’t imagine the cleanup. Will Lola keep her bandage on without an Elizabethan collar? My doggies have to crash around with that awful collar when their tootsies are injured. Palemale is a fine example or resiliency.
For the record: Palemale has been seen post Sandy. He has a new mate, Octavia, and he has been catching prey foy his 2 youngsters who survived rat poisoning and were released . After months in a rehab Palemale recognized them and resumed fatherly duties. Octavia, who is not the mother, does not approve.
