Ed Koch has croaked. He was 88, so I guess it’s no big surprise. Personally, I think they ought to throw him in the back of a pickup truck and bury him in a gingham dress near a Sears somewhere north of Westchester. Odds are they won’t be doing that, but it would make for a good dog and pony show. Not as good as Chuck Hagel’s confirmation hearings, though. The faux outrage from the likes of l’l Lindsey Graham and Ted “Joe McCarthy” Cruz (plus the actual crazy old man rage of John McCain) has been quite enjoyable. I know he’s Obama’s nominee, but it’s fun to watch these guys eat their own.
I’m listening to John Hodgman on WTF right now, and he just mentioned that he’s 41. I don’t know about you, but that makes me feel really old. I always figured he was more or less my age. Seems like everybody’s younger than I am these days.
Speaking of getting old, I decided to quit drinking coffee almost a year ago. I was cold a couple weeks ago and decided to have a couple of cups, and I felt like my heart and brain were going to explode. It was quite an unpleasant experience, so I decided to get myself some decaf.
A few days back, I drank probably a pot and a half of decaf, and felt like crap. So I looked to see if there’s a problem with drinking too much decaf. Damned if there isn’t. I knew there was some caffeine in decaf, but, damn, this article says there’s up to 10%. Plus, it’s very acidic which puts
your body into an acidity crisis, which forces it to liberate alkalizing minerals from your bones to maintain the proper pH balance. Over-acidity is an important cause of osteoporosis, arthritis and calcification of blood vessels and tissues, according to “Human Biochemistry and Disease.”
[…]
As such, decaf coffee consumption is associated with heartburn, stomach ulcers and digestive problems.
[…]
In addition to the acidity side effects, both decaf and regular blends of coffee raise your risk for certain diseases, such as heart disease, atherosclerosis, high blood cholesterol, rheumatoid arthritis, glaucoma and possibly even cancer, according to “Nutrition and Public Health.” Robusta beans contain a much higher content of diterpenes, which are fats that increase triglycerides in your bloodstream and elevate circulating liver enzymes. Chlorogenic acid is found in both caffeinated and decaf coffee and is believed to raise plasma levels of homocysteine, which damages blood vessels and eventually leads to atherosclerosis, or hardening of your arteries.
Oh, good. Not only that, but
The decaffeination process uses the solvent methylene chloride, which often leaves residues within the coffee beans. Methylene chloride is a known carcinogenic that is toxic to your lungs, nervous system, liver and mucous membranes, as cited in the “PDR Guide to Drug Interactions, Side Effects, and Indications.” Repeated or prolonged exposure to methylene chloride can increase your risk of cancer. Even “natural” decaffeination methods use ethyl acetate, another solvent that can have serious health consequences in large amounts. Ethyl acetate is found in trace amounts in some fruit, which is why companies can claim their coffee is naturally decaffeinated.
:paranoid:
So not only does decaf suck, it’s also trying to kill me. Isn’t that special
I left that Ricky Skaggs video earlier for Mayor Ed in deference to comments by real New Yawkahs. It might have been his finest moment.
Meanwhile, I gave up caffeinated coffee in the 80’s. Recently I have been backsliding a bit. Well, I have used the decaf ever since then. There are better processes than others, usually indicated by a higher price tag. I saw a cheap can of something recently that had a reasonable brand name and it was way too ‘charged’. I had to mix it with another milder ‘decaf’. I have also been making a big pot in the morning some days with a scoop of regular and two scoops of decaf. After a hot cup or two, I’ll have the rest iced. All the while I have continued to drink an occasional Coke as long as it has real sugar (Mexican or Kosher รขโโฌ for Passover). I have become more wary of teas though through the years.
But thanks for the advisory, pj. :joe:
Nine foods you should never eat again
I’ll struggle a bit on #5.
I’m good on all those, though every once in a while I’ll get some tofu and do stuff with it. But it’s rare, and the stuff I get explicitly says it’s non-GM organic. I’ll have to look into the hexane though.
I’m just glad beer isn’t on that list.
I read recently that drinking at least 6 cups of coffee a day is good for you. That doesn’t sound true but as I drink lots of coffee, I like to think it is. Besides, the older I get the few vices I have. If I gave up coffee that would leave too few bad habits to make life interesting.
I think that the coffee problem is a decaf thing. There seems to be a lot of healthy and politically correct java available and it is supposed to be good for you. I tell myself that about wine and beer, too.
๐ :joe:
I won’t harsh your buzz about beer since I suspect that neither you nor I drink the toxic swill. There is a little problem with sulfites in wine though.
:40: :alc:
Don’t take away my morning coffee or… (Insert Fred’s tommy gun). Peets uses water process for their decaf. I want the buzz of the real stuff and I eadily admit my body is addicted to it (headache withdraw). Can’t drink after about noon, though. Concur with sp, too few vices anymore. I’ve even had to stop drinking wine; ze ole bod protests when I enjoy the nectar of the Gods. I really wanted an alcohol-induced buzz yesterday after multiple hearings with a royal pain in the arse judge. Very sad indeed that I can no longer drown my frustrations.
Peet’s was Judge Ito’s favorite coffee. The East Bay-based company was sold last year to a German conglomerate for almost $1B.
:pup:
I posted the YouTube of Barney’s bite on the FB. I figured I would leave the note of his passing here to the real dog people.
๐ :gate: :pup:
I have it on some degree of background that Rick was not just flying on java here.
I can’t stand the people who are praising Ed Koch tonight. All that needs to be know about him is that he was good friends with Al D’Amato who was as dumb and sleazy a senator as any Rethug could be.
Did Punxsatawney Phil not see his shadow or did the thought of Subterranean Ed scare him out to an early Spring. I wonder how climate change affects that.
Ohhh Just saw Barney Bush, former First Dog, passed away. :gate: Always thought he and Ms Beasley were about the only bright spots during those 8 long years of hell. Even if that feisty dog bit a reporter now and again (being somewhat partial to reporters).
More on decaf
You can probably get some righteous decaf from the WTF/Majority Report supporter, Just Coffee.
Probably better than being bit by Ari Fleischer or Rove. You might contract Rovies.
We’re very fond of Caribou- I drink fully leaded Ethiopian but the MS’ drinks decaff which Caribou proudly markets as steamed

I just went on a diet a week ago after I listened to Maron talk to Tim Weiss “The Four Hour Body”.
http://fourhourbody.com/
Seems as gimmicky as any popular diet plan but amongst the things you say goodbye to are anything white-
Rice, bread, pretty much anything containing grain.
The third day my 24/7 morning sneezing and all day runny nose were gone.
Also, no artificial sweetners or pretty much all dairy (except for no-fat yogurt.
I did have a couple of stoned-whole wheat crackers at some point and it was very delicious- almost like dessert.
So far my emotional eating is under control.
The hardest part is eating a few forkfuls of sauerkraut before breakfast but it kind of kills your appetite for food the rest of the day :barf:
Can I substitute kimchee for sauerkraut? I like both but one on a bun with a nitate enabler. Not that I might be able to make all of that transition right away.
Caribou isn’t around these parts but I used to prefer them when I was on the road.
Yes to Kimchee- anything ferminted that contributes ‘good’ bacteria including no-fat unsweetened yogurt and kombucha. He quotes a study by a Dr. Weston Price of 12 near-deisease-free indiginous communities world-wide.
Will have to listen to that one.
Did you see this article in the NYT’s?
Kimchi :barf: Memories of being pregnant and visiting S. Korea where EVERYTHING freaking smells like kimchi :barf: :barf:
Any excuse to re-post this childhood favorite.
Is the Gravatar connection broken or is it just my computer?
There’s just a white space with a blue :bf: sign inside.
Seems to be working for me.
At someone’s suggestion I added “easyprivacy’ and ‘fanboy’ for filtering after Java was found to be full of viruses and I think the gravatar disappeared shortly after
