Happy Labor Day, everybody, and so long, summer (maybe not technically the end, but for all intents and purposes, this is it and things go downhill pretty quickly from here). Although autumn is may favorite season (though it’s typically way too short around here), I’m sad to see summer come to an end. Mostly because I hate it when it starts getting dark at like 4:30, and the sun doesn’t come up until like 7:30. Doesn’t allow for seeing much daylight – especially when you work in a windowless cave (I know I say that a lot and am repeating myself, but I’m old and that’s what we do). Mother Nature decided to celebrate by giving us a rather impressive light show overnight, which would have been cool if not for the terrified dog panting wetly all over me. Good thing I didn’t have to work today.
Fortunately, it’s football season now. Unfortunately, it started the way it seems to always start for me these days – with an SU loss. Despite displaying virtually no offense (with plenty of blame to go around – piss poor play calling, confused and at times clueless coaching, miscommunication between the QB and the receiving corps, and a mostly ineffective running game), they only lost by six points, and actually got the ball back (courtesy of their defense, which looked fairly OK for the most part) on their own 44 with 2:04 to go. Sadly, they wasted the opportunity with a quite pitiful series that ended with an INT to seal the deal. Hopefully things will improve, but probably not in time to win the next game – at #22 Northwestern. Could be a long season.
I got the grass cut yesterday, which was good ‘cuz it was getting pretty long. I’ve been holding off on cutting it, ‘cuz I needed to fill up my diesel cans, and that aint cheap. It’s about all I’ve accomplished, though I may put the loader on the tractor and go out in to the woods and get some dirt to fill in the trenches that the dogs have dug in the lawn. Little bastids.
Oh well, one more hot and humid day here, and then things are supposed to cool off for the rest of the week. Guess it’s time to buy winterizing chemicals for the pool.
Have a good rest of the weekend.
Looks like Diana Nyad is gonna make it this time.
Quite an accomplishment (though I must admit, I think it’s rather insane).
Sounds awful to me: jellyfish, swollen lips, ugh.
In a country that despises laborers, Labor Day (the name at least) seems destined for a change. Perhaps it will be named Koch Day, or Reagan Day.
Shelter Island was filled with Labor Day vacationers. But the weather has been drippy and is supposed to be quite wet today. Lots of folks seemed to have left yesterday. While I do not miss them, many residents of the island depend on them for their businesses. Once they leave, the residents can’t provide enough commerce to allow many people to earn a living.
School will begin this week (or should I say the test prep academies will open). A recent NY Times article said the average experience of charter school teachers is 2 years. Most quit after that or go on to supervisory positions. The average experience of public school teachers is 14 years. But, the new masters of education insanity say the young teachers are much better ’cause the experienced ones burn out. I am glad that this end of summer does not mean I have to go back to teach. The idiocy and cruelty of what is happening to kids and teachers is too nauseating.
I am disappointed that Obama didn’t open the White House door and yell out at McGrumpa and w’il Lindsey “Hey, get off my lawn!â€. All that was missing was the whiny LIEberman. Don’t these guys get they are fading into oblivion of no use to anyone? Next to nobody believes in their tired warmongering BS (except defense contractors and the new security-industrial complex).
:spank:
He’s not missing, unfortunately:
Lieberman said that he would urge lawmakers — including his “amigos,” Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) — to approve an action in Syria. “I’m sure that our enemies are cheering now as a result of this decision because they realize it’s not clear the president will get authority, and our allies are worried,” he concluded. “That’s why, again, this resolution or something like it has to pass Congress.”

Sorry if you’ve seen it before.
25 Celebrities When They Were Young
Having trouble sleeping due to receipt of a letter related to probable eviction, I turn on Morning Joke to discover Cokie on their roundtable. This week has not begun well.
:omg:
Well that sucks.
Yeah, the vision of Cokie early in the morning to greet the Fall ain’t right.
😉
I was driving this morning and I heard Morning Joe. They are more tolerable on the radio than they are on TV. Not having to look at them is a plus.
Why the possible eviction? That sounds awful, especially in SF where I assume housing is tight and expensive, as it is in NYC.
:dancers: :hubba: :tommygun:
I am not exactly sure why. I have an offshore owner and a local property manager. I was notified by a law firm which is the first step trying to free the property from the restrictions that come after eviction by making a settlement with the tenant.
The probable reason is the low rent or they want to sell. Real estate here is in a crazy bubble and The City is awash in tech wealth and there are a lot of wealthy foreigners buying. Yesterday I was over at an old friend’s house picking up a bunch of LPs she wanted to get rid of because she and her husband were selling their house for that reason and moving to Marin. It will sell for 7 figures and maybe 8. Another old friend was there who let me know he was selling his house and the non-wife’s photography studio in The Mission and moving to Seattle. Their property will list at $2.3M. The crazy thing is that lots of listings end up selling well over asking price and often in cash. Both of them are native born San Franciscans, one with a name you would recognize.
If and when I am out I will probably have to leave SF. I have lived here in this 2 BR house for 20 years so my rent is relatively reasonable. I probably would be lucky to find a studio apt at the same rent. I am in the market for a new place to reside at a reasonable rate, maybe one where I can find a new job. All ideas and suggestions are welcome.
I forgot to say that I am not a native. In 9 days I will ‘celebrate my 40th anniversary as a San Francisco resident, almost 2/3 of my life. Over half of that has been in this house.
That’s a huge bummer, Vern. Sad 🙁 There is affordable housing and jobs down here!! No Giants 🙁 but we have an American farm Team, the Redhawks, and the Thunder! :alc:
My elderly aunt lived in NYC for 50 years prior to her passing. She lived in the same apartment for 40 of those years thanks to rent control. No way could she have afforded to stay without the regulation. Great apartment, great location. I was incredibly thankful she could stay even though the landlord lost tons of money.
Thanks, but the DH is a non-starter for me and it doesn’t seem too West Virginia friendly over there. We may have to think about ex-pat Giant fan reunions though.
Tonight Chris Hays gets a sit down interview with SoS John Kerry. Another good get for MSNBC’s Alex today with Ron Paul. Nice how this piece of crap starts mocking Wagner around 8;10 when he gets tired of being questioned/challenged so his boot-clicking, goose-stepping adherents will declare another Paul ‘victory’.
I guess it’s official now.
Alec Baldwin to host MSNBC Friday night talk show
When I see Kerry now I think he looks like he just got back from a long swim from Cuba to Key West.
I don’t know if you ever watched Deep Space 9, but nowadays Kerry looks like the character Odo, played by René Auberjonois.
That mug would be easy to sculpt in butter.
be careful, Okat, or the next state fair will have said butter sculpture on display..
Speaking of Alec Baldwin….
Yea for Diana Nyad.
Groan on the weird grunting by Serena Williams tennis opponent today.
Yea on Maron’s Ben Sidran interview.
WHT, WTF!? I haven’t listened to the Sidran interview yet. I was a little surprised to see his name on the board. I had a friend who was a big Sidran. Unfortunately he took his life earlier this year after extended depression and frustration with the meds his doctors never quite right.
Someone the other day somewhere that they thought Monica Seles might have been stabbed because of her ‘grunting’. Then again, I’ve never heard that Keith Jarrett got stabbed at a performance.
Yes, Keith Jarrett. He would also gyrate and heckle at the audience!
Gary Burton doesn’t grunt and gyrate like Jarrett but
brings things to a halt if you’re not reverentially quiet enough.
The Sidran interview is,as Marc say’s, one of his best. He has come to the World Affairs Conference in Boulder for many years to participate in panels over a wide range of topics. One of the hardest things to get into is the jazz jam sessions that are a part of the Conference.
